SDS100/SDS200: SDS 200 volume problem.

I have an SDS 200 since they first came out and having a slight prpblem that doesn't affect its performance but is annoying. The problem is that when you raise or lower the volume it doesn't turn up or down right away. The volume setting number will slowly go up and the volume slowly increase if I'm turning it up and slowly goes down if I'm turning it down. It's annoying because if I turn it up and it takes it's time getting louder it may be too loud when it stops raising the volume. I can turn it up and I can then sit and watch the volume number slowly go up as well as the actual volume increasing Then because it's too loud after it goes up I have to sometimes turn it down and it's just as slow going lower in volume. Any ideas on what could be wrong and what it takes to fix it? Thanks.

I don't think this is a known issue. I am assuming you are on the latest firmware, or at least a somewhat recent one, and this isn't some early software bug.

Personally I would backup your SD card, then reset the scanner back to default. Program one or two systems just to get it scanning something, and see if the volume slowness problem is still there. If the problem is gone, then at least we know the scanner itself is fine.

I have not noticed this issue on the two SDS 200 scanners I have. Are you running the most recent firmware?

That said, I had to roll back the most recent firmware because of an irritating clicking noise on P25 conventional systems.

Never noticed this either. I just set my volume to 12 when I turn it on.

I sent my SDS 200 for flickering screen and loose on/off switch . The new unit that I received does not exhibit the above issues. I set my volume at 3 with its builtin speaker.

About how long of a time delay are we talking here? No other functions affected? (Scan, scan hold, number input?, etc)

I have never seen this on a sds200. Its possible the control is dirty but first if you can answer whiskey3JMC question it may help us trouble shoot the issue. Also did you reprogram or update the unit or has it always done this?

The volume controller only supply a DC voltage to the CPU that then adjust the gain of the audio level going to the speaker amplifier.
That DC voltage goes to a high ohm resistor and then to a filtering capacitor to get rid of any glitches or sudden spikes in voltage due to a worn potentiometer. It should only have a delay of 5mS or so.

It seems that your resistor have gone much higher in ohm and the voltage will then change very slowly to the CPU.
If the capacitor where bad it would only go slow when increasing the volume but would be at a normal speed when lowering the volume.
If the actual potentiometer have gone very bad it could also affect the operation but can be checked if just going between the very lowest 3-4 values or the 3-4 highest values. If those seem to change much quicker then the actual volume potentiometer could be bad and might need a splash of contact spray. But if that doesn't work it will probably need to go to a repair shop to fix this, if you can't solder and locate the resistor that goes from the middle pin of the potentiometer to that high ohm resistor and first try and resolder it and then perhaps measure it as it should be between 10k and 50k.
