So I guess now that uniden has made it clear we are on our own with the backlight.

It's time to talk about what flashlight works best to see the keypad with out losing your night vision.

I’m on my 2nd sds200, returned the first one because of speaker noise and very dim keypad lights, got the new one today, same issues. Going to try it out a few days

Noise as well?

There is a separate forum discussion specifically about the speaker noise issue. Someone has created a work around
on the speaker noise by inserting two pieces of double sided scotch tape underneath the black case of the scanner.
There is a full explanation of what he did and how, and a picture as well. A couple of others have tried this and they
say it works. Check around. It is a recent discussion about speaker noise and it shouldn't be hard to find.

I don't really have an issue - the backlight is dimmer than other scanners, but perfectly readable for me in a dark room.

Not sure why they thought that was a good idea, but ok. Maybe it’s because I’m legally blind that I can’t see them good in the dark. I personally would like an adjustment to make it brighter, the display was fine, thanks for the reply

Could very well be, and you should have disclosed that you have a vision impairment when commenting on / complaining about the brightness level of the keypad.

Regardless of my problem, I’m not the only person that complained, and compared to my 100 and 996p2 the 200 units I tried where not as bright as others pictured

It's naive to actually believe the engineers, during design, said "let's make the keypad backlight much dimmer on the base version of the SDS-100". The more likely scenario is they use very cheap, often anemic LEDs and didn't pay close enough attention to detail. If I'm representing the company I'll also say "No, no everyone... We did that on purpose". I get it, you have to mitigate these situations any way you can to avoid losing money via returns/repairs etc. But me personally will forgive and understand if I'm given an honest answer as to what happened. No person is perfect, no process is flawless.

I agree with you completely. I was finally able to spend some "alone time" with my SDS200 scanner in two separate dark places,
next to my recliner in the den and on a bedside table in the bedroom. The keypad backlight is perfectly adequate for a totally
dark environment. If it were any brighter it would be annoying in a totally dark room.

I am perfectly happy with my SDS200 keypad light just the way it is.

I like the dimmer keypad lighting on the SDS 200 as opposed to the garish keypad lighting of the 536.

I thought the button lighting on the 536 was perfect. Everyone is different, that is why the keypad lighting should be adjustable as well, how hard could it be to do that

I believe Upman has commented that the brightness level of the SDS200 keypad was intentionally lowered compared to previous scanners. Some people thought it was too bright, particularly when used in vehicles. Clearly there are differences in individual's vision and preferences that at least partially explains the issue. It would be nice if it was adjustable.
