Hello, I don't mean to be impeding on your radio forum here but I was looking at Sevier county for when I come up, besides a confusing mess of different systems I noticed the land air communications is not only nxdn but all of them are partial encryption which I would understand but noticed cabin rentals and a towing service were partially encrypted, is this a mistake or is a cabin rental walkie talkie so important that it has to be encrypted? thanks for any help

Don’t hold me to it, but as far as I am aware anything on Land Air is E. Several neighboring agencies to me are on their NXDN system and are always E. Cocke, Jefferson, and Sevier for their law enforcement, but I believe Pigeon Forge is on TACN - I could be wrong about PF. I’m under the impression that Land Air really likes encryption. I myself am pro transparency but that is for another forum.

Hopefully that helps.

The word interoperability or the lack there of come to mind when I hear NXDN and encryption. Considering their vast area and income from tourism I’m a little surprised they didn’t go with TACN as a whole. Events like Rod Runs requires a lot of resources.

such a large area with lots of commotion lots of shared areas, encryption here doesn't seem chosen, they certainly cannot use it for "officer safety" no common criminal would buy a 400-550 dollar scanner then buy a 60 dollar upgrade, so much confusion with all these different agencies

well my family is law enforcement:rolleyes: but ok, just a lot of different possible problems with the setup they have
I don't want to start a debate but PF is moving towards TACN for primary operations. You should expect more PF city users joining the system.

I have used and seen multiple systems both P25 and NXDN with interop gateways and if setup correctly it can allow seemless Interoperability.

For the most part they write tickets for traffic violations. The average income in Sevier County is $27,607. Indeed most people will find it hard to justify spending $500 or more on a scanner. A radar detector is probably a better investment for avoiding traffic violations such as speeding.

I’m unable to find any statistics on scanners being used in the commission of a crime, but it appears as if there is no data supporting encryption increases officer safety. If anything a good majority of crime goes unresolved.

According to the FBI

  • In the nation in 2017, 45.6 percent of violent crimes and 17.6 percent of property crimes were cleared by arrest or exceptional means.
  • When considering clearances of violent crimes, 61.6 percent of murder offenses, 53.3 percent of aggravated assault offenses, 34.5 percent of rape offenses, and 29.7 percent of robbery offenses were cleared.
  • Among property crimes, 19.2 percent of larceny-theft offenses, 13.7 percent of motor vehicle theft offenses, and 13.5 percent of burglary offenses were cleared.
  • In 2017, 21.7 percent of arson offenses were cleared by arrest or exceptional means

Will PF be encrypted?

From what I have heard so far, they seem to be mostly in the clear... I don't know what their future plans are, however.
That is a good thing for people who wish to listen. Also good for inter op with the National Parks Services although they are mostly phase I but I believe they are sprinkling in some Phase II now. I have to say NPS coverage from Gatlinburg is mind blowingly excellent. VHF of course. NPS seems to use a happy medium of encryption in my opinion with more in the clear than in the dark. I’m amazed how many calls they get and traffic stops they make.

Sevier County has a true Neapolitan mish mash of digital modes: DMR, NXDN, and P25 Phase I and II. VHF, UHF, and 7/800. They should shomehow sprinkle low band into the equation. Their EMA vehicles must look like porcupines. Moto APX 8500 for P25 on VHF - 7/800 and analog V/UHF. Kenwood NX series for DMR / NXDN on UHF. One of these days a true do it all radio will appear for a ridiculous amount of money.

Not to bring back a old thread was wondering is Pigeon Forge FD encrypted? Also are they on the TACN network or still on the NXDN system? Should I program all the TACN system wide Interop & Mutual Aid talkgroups?

According to the TG list: 48000, 48001, and 48002 are all clear but they do have one event TG that is encrypted - 48003. So probably clear to hear PF PD. The county is on NXDN all dark. MA and Interop are indeed used by various agencies but it isn’t a sure thing. Can’t hurt to have them since that would be the go to in the event of a large scale event such as the Gatlinburg fires. There is some upcoming state events happening early next month you might hear some traffic on the MA talk groups.

Hope that helped.

For what it is worth I’m a frequent flyer of VTAC 11 and UTAC 42D. Typically when I don’t want something going over all the scanner apps or working with another agency where repeater coverage isn’t so great. The 7/800 TAC stuff gets used frequently with medevacs. Also state EMS frequency on analog.
