Guys,

I just caught some previously-unheard traffic on the P25 via TGID 735. That converts to 11760, and it's not in the database (although it closely matches one county would be using).

After further examination, it appears to be public-works related traffic in Montgomery (referenced salting at Montfort & Rt. 206). I know County Roads are on the PSIC, but I had no idea Montgomery had their DPW on the TRS,,,

Yes, that is Montgomery Township DPW. That talkgroup is actually an old Montgomery PD Tac from waaaaay back when Montgomery had their own dispatch. The DPW has been using it for some time.

Back when Montgomery PD was self-dispatched on the TRS, that was one of their talkgroups (their alternate, I believe). When they switched to county dispatch their old self-dispatch talkgroup (11728 Mot, which would be 733 on P25) became their new alternate and DPW moved to their old alternate channel.

I haven't paid enough attention in a while to know whether MPD still uses their own alternate or if they're really only on the Region 8 Ops-1 and Ops-2.

Jim

(sorry, I posted this reply without seeing KC2ZHY's earlier reply on the next page of the thread)

MPD definitely still uses 11728 / 733 for road ops, checkpoints, etc.; I hear it somewhat frequently still. I haven't heard them ever use the other PD Ops channels.

The PD SOUTH talkgroup has been simulcast on the P25 system for what seems like ages now. I wonder if anyone is planning to switch over anytime soon...

I had thought Montgomery already was on the P25 side on PD South / Region 8 and guessed it's still coming over Zone 1 because of SBBPD. I'll have to try monitoring the inputs next time I travel through Montgomery to try to catch which zone of the same functional system they are actually transmitting into.

Yep, they use that TG quite often during the cell phone enforcement crackdowns.

I've gotten quite accustomed to the sound of digital over analog (thanks to the SmartX converters). I'm almost positive that Montgomery sounds like they are on the P25 side (same 'nasal' sound as county from every unit).

You're wondering if someone other than Montgomery is switching to PD Region 8 on P25? That would only leave SBBPD, right, so Region 8 would effectively be vacated on Site 1?

Jim,

Yep, something along those lines. SBBPD was one of the first PD's on the TRS when the Type-II went live. I have no idea what radios they are using now (they were rocking the MTS2000's at the start!).

Montgomery was one of the last, and the state contract pricing would have required them to get at least an XTS/XTL-series radio.

The latest Update

Here are the facts on the latest Somerset County Upgrades.

Moto's 7.x system is now being programmed into all the sites.

So what does that mean to you?

Well for your scanner, if Morris County was any indication, those 9600 P25 TG's may become
a problem for you if you get much multi-path in the signal from the TRS at 9600. My 996XT is
now deaf to Morris even with full signal because of multipath (no my squelch is not tight).

If you are a Public Safety user expect the following. While upgrading the system it will default to
"Site Trunking" with a limited number of TG's. Traffic will increase on these TG's other as TG users default (this means more system busy's).

How long it takes to flash all of the sites I do not know. Here are the ONLY TG's that will be in use while
the upgrade occurs.

PD REG 1
PD REG 5
PD REG 6
PD REG 8
SHERIFF
PUBLIC SAFETY
EMS Reg 1
EMS Reg 2
FD REG 1
FD REG 6

Next stop for the bus? The future holds a linked 9600 / 700MHZ TDMA (not linked to NJ PSIC) and the legacy (first 3600) system will be terminated. You may see links to other Counties (like Morris) in the future with a few system(s) wide TG's.

If you are a PS systems operator in the County, think deep about what this means to you. This is of course un-official and subject to change.

What's with SBBPD coming over the Franklin site now? It's TG 11344 on there from the last time I saw.

Guys,

Somerset County Communications made the news again today, announcing that they had awarded a contract to a Union County firm to begin construction on the comm-center expansion. The article mention they are taking over full PD dispatching for Manville next month.

Has anyone heard whether this will be via their conventional VHF channel, or will they be moving to the TRS?

Thanks for posting the link I was referring to. A little difficult to do when I was going through Tapatalk.

Glad to see that Manville isn't laying anyone off and is using the extra money to expand the police coverage.

I wonder how long before Hillsborough finally gives in and hands police dispatching over.

It is very interesting the way this is being done.

Optional to join or not. So if the town opt's out and keeps dispatch local, the taxpayer is essentially paying twice (and more). The weight of this offer will keep pressure on local officials.

The other sweetener the County is offering is a contract GUARANTEEING the period of time that no user fees will be charged (and I am not talking about a couple of years).

I do not know of another County in NJ doing this.

Question

Just curious about something. With Somerset, Morris and Union towns headed towards all being dispatched by a central dispatch center, will these towns be able to revert back to their local dispatch should something catastrophic happen to the county dispatch? Just wondering.

Spoke to one of my trusted sources today. Manville will be on PD REGION 5 with Branchburg.

Do you know if this also means that PD Region 5 will remain in operation 24/7, unlike the current plan where they revert to Region 6 on nights and weekends?

Probably at the start, but with the comm center expanding out to 26 total operating positions, it wont be that way for long...

That's pretty much what I assumed as well.
