Showing as XA979

AES:AE6CF1 GESD0 20-1941 ! SA 1 FLIGHT XA979

Landing at Waterbury-Oxford Connecticut airport......

The XA didn't seem to block SAM 979 from FlightRadar24 this time. And they did use the SAM 979 ident on the radio as they landed and taxied to the Atlantic Aviation FBO.

Local METAR still looks fine but there is some weather showing on the way to the beach, EAGLE TWO N22PP is orbiting FedEx Field, possibly still waiting for the MARINE ONE liftoff.

After my lunch break heard Tanker TEFLON-10 req to enter Oyster area of the CAP,
Thought I heard NOBLE-12 callsign.
Looks like PP Helo got halfway across the Bay and is returning DC. Don't see any of the usual DSP choppers up.
Heard some weak A/A 267.500

Was a Bowl game scheduled for Annapolis Field today called the Military Bowl but cancelled as Boston College
had too many missing players due to Covid, injuries etc. No flyovers in this wx anyway :)

Rgr heard TEFLON-10 on ZDC 354.150 with same message says they are airborne and will be here within the hour.
Short tanker shift :)

Someone on GK 238.100 mentioned they are Southbound. Someone also on Langley Iron Ops 357.100
TEFLON-10 with TEFLON-11 on 247.050 asks why TACC got you already. We have enough fuel for long time but they wanted you guys anyway.

Terry San Fran radio is busy today on 129.400. Earlier had United 2135 going to Orlando
req selcal check on HF 6640. Heard San Fran come up on that freq chatting with 2135.
Since not going oceanic why do they need a selcal check? Had an ABX cargo flight today also do the same for Kentucky flight.
Maybe in case their Airline dispatch wants to call them?
1605 local just had gabby SWA-435 pilot enroute Tampa report female pax fainted but is ok now and doctor aboard looked at her.
She said it was from stress and dehydration though pilot goofed and gave her full name age and date of birth.. Thats a no-no and not needed.

Vgames15 you mean Jan 2. :)

The SELCAL is used regardless of location. It is a way to contact an aircraft "selectively" by sending the code and which then rings a bell in the cockpit. While HF is where it is most noticeable - flights all over the world use it for communication from their operations or from companies like ARINC. Some aircraft do not have SATCOM or ACARS installed so they monitor ARINC and if needed to be contacted - ARINC sends their SELCAL and the crew contacts them. You can hear SELCAL checks from aircraft sitting on the ground preflight as well.

On the gabby pilot - well they could have just passed the seat number and they could look up the passenger information on the ground but probably just got the information from people in the back and just forwarded it. Chances are slim that a lot of people heard what you heard.

As Terry said, the SELCAL is used to get in touch with an aircraft to maintain 'operational control' (for example, see: eCFR :: 14 CFR 121.533 -- Responsibility for operational control: Domestic operations). United 2135 flying EWR-MCO might require an HF check since the routing could potentially go well offshore in some cases due to weather. It was a Boeing 737-800, I'm not sure if this particular plane was ETOPS certified. I think in most cases air carriers in the Western Atlantic can fly up to 75 minutes from a suitable airport in a non-ETOPS twin engine aircraft if allowed in the carrier's Operations Specifications.

HF SELCAL checks are often heard over the Continental U.S. on flights where Operational Experience training is being given by a Check Airman. A lot of OE (formerly IOE) training is being conducted right now as pilots go back to work after the massive Covid cutbacks. With modern simulators most of the training required for licensing and restoring proficiency is done in the sim. The first training flight in the aircraft is done with a Check Airman in the other seat and with paying pax or cargo in the back.

Most of the cargo carriers flying for Amazon don't seem to use ACARS. Here in Kentucky I often hear them pass out and off times, takeoff fuel and ETAs on 129.45. Also, for a few weeks of the year around Christmas, FedEx and UPS are allowed by their respective pilot unions to use contract carriers to fly their excess domestic freight.

Looks like some AK F-35's from the 356FS Green Demons spent Christmas at MCAS Iwakuni working.
Assume it is Iwakuni as getting hot pit refueled via ground USMC KC-130J's in clip.

We have more F-22's and F-35's in Alaska these days.. Send them out on road trips :)
Could use some more Tankers up there with only 8- 9 KC-135's but 4 more on the way in 2023.
