Sweeping up after the Presidential visit, the following were in -- out of Otis today. All from the Mode-S log, so the displayed callsigns may not have been the ones used.
Edit...question, would they break down and air transport the VH-60/CH-46`s ?, i would have thought they could be flown back?
For the record, at least 2 VH-60s and 4 CH-46 were at Otis. Someone today heard a Nighthawk flight of 3 headed toward Dover.

85-0001 C-5B 0032 -- 0255 [no c/s disp]
89-1191 C-17A 1307 -- 1610 [RCH9191]
04-4133 C-17A 0757 -- 0954 [RCH214T]

Also in -- out of MVY today, i guess picking up the supplies and equipement used by the HH-65 `Guardian 1`

2004 HC-130J 1111 -- 1413 [C2004]

NASA 607 (DHC-6, N607NA) is off Patterson doing orbits over the NMUSAF (or at least in that general location). I still have no idea why they do that (BE9Ls ANGEL 91/92 - N91S/N92B as well). N92B has some sort of camera in the bay - I've seen it open while flying - but I'm not sure what type of images it takes, because they work on overcast days as well. Now NASA 607 just referenced "researchers in back." I used to think it was some kind of testing for new military equipment, but with NASA joining the mix, I'm starting to think it's some general research.

Logs coming soon, once 607 lands.

Adrian, 85-0001 was REACH 204T. That one and the 04-4133 I can confirm the callsign you have. He eventually made it back to McGuire this afternoon. I didn't hear the other C-17 (89-1191).

I think you picked the right words - "sweeping up" - since there's always a ton (actually tons and tons) of stuff to return to their normal places after the president moves for an extended stay as we all witnessed last week. I know they've got to do whatever it takes to keep the president safe but it seems to have gotten out of hand as time goes by. Using the number of aircraft they do just becomes ridiculous. We see more and more involvement from the entire government and a huge contribution from the military being demanded. I would think a fighter or two with hot engines sitting on the tarmac would be sufficient - or perhaps just a few fighters on alert status at a couple of places. Somehow, I don't think they're going to take my suggestions though.

In this instance, with Otis being less than 10 miles from where he was staying, i wonder if it would have been more cost effective to just detach a flight of 8 or 10 F-15s to Otis and have them operate from there, just to save on some gas. You could even have them come in individually for refuelling and save the tankers........maybe just have one on duty but sat on the ground for the most part.
Just to save some gas....i think F-15s average 10000pounds of fuel per hour, just while in the CAP, when you multiply that by 2 and by 168for the 7 days, it starts to get staggering, not to mention the transit fuel, and i haven`t even mentioned the Tanker............

The fun starts all over again tomorrow as he is going to Camp David for a long Labor Day weekend. I guess he needs to rest after that long vacation.

Money is no object. This bunch just prints what they need.

Yes, there just seem to be much better ways to provide the protection at much reduced cost - at least to those of us that are observers of the assets being used. That's what I had in mind when I mentioned using alert fighter status and they wouldn't have to be all at one base. Both Otis and Barnes could have been used. Especially Barnes, with its own F-15 mission, was almost certainly in a position to support a TDY flight of F-15s for a week.

By the way, the CAP F-15s used to report using 12,000 pounds an hour versus around 6,000 for F-16s. Lately, their reports are much less and, during this most recent CAP, one flight leader reported using 7,000 pounds per hour average during one of the shifts. I think they must have been told to lay off using afterburners while tooling around the sky in their orbits and to take other actions to reduce fuel usage. The KC-135s still use around 12,000 pounds per hour of flight. No matter how you add it up, it's still one hell of a fuel bill to keep a tanker and two F-15s in the sky 24/7 for a week. But, hey, it's only taxpayers money they're using so no need to think about how to save money.

The Guard Dog CAP restarts Wednesday. The TFR has not been published yet.

Finally got around to doing my logs for today.

NAVY 7N 578 (UC-12B, 161309)
??? x0 (unid) - fighter departing, only caught the last digit of the callsign
JOSA 592 (C-21A, unid) - 6 pax (2 space A's), told Dispatch they were having trouble transmitting on UHF (I heard them - just a little weak), departed 2107Z
NAVY 7W 307 (UC-12B, unid) - dropping off 1 A4
NASA 608 (T-34C, N608NA) - from KCLE; to KCLE
MARINE 655 (unid)
NASA 607 (DHC-6, N607NA) - up to do orbits

At the end of their orbits, NASA 607 called in to "base" - didn't catch what frequency it was on, probably 122.850. Reported ground contact with "NIGHT STAIR BASE" (or at least that's what it sounded like). I have no idea what that is; if anyone does, please let me know.

From what I understand, Otis has barely enough to support the USCG presence there, let alone a contigent of F-15s [with their pilots and other support personnel], even for a limited stay. Same with Barnes .... and with them, there's very little room at the inn. 150 ground personnel shipped out with the 8-12 pilots for Red Flag, so there's no support available from the 104FW.

In both cases, there is little or no on-base housing, mess facilities, medical facilities, adequete fueling facilities, etc. that would make it any cheaper if all of that was hauled in, than staging it out of Langley.

Now, to me, Burlington would have been a possible choice. It's definitely closer, has support facilities [albeit not for F-15s] and there's the airport hotel right on site to put everyone up.

Trust me, I would have died happy if I could have watched a CAP stage out of my back yard [figuratively] for a week ..... but we'll have to wait for Mitt Romney to get elected for that to happen.

No, .... wait ..... he'll probably end up vacationing in SLC, UT.

Well, okay. Pick a base, any base. Off base quarters can be used. Even Andrews requires that of many visitors. The point is simply do something that will think about saving taxpayers' money. No one in government seems to do that.

New subject...
