264.55 MHz in Southern MD

384.5 MHz BayWatch Range control and Link 21 discussing channel to use - shifted to 264.55 MHz.

264.55 MHz with C/S Echo Control and Link 21 (or is it Lynx 21?). Sounds like they are testing various emitters.

Late 1000, early 1100 hour has some Langley fighter activity on tac freqs «228.45» and «257.075». Both may be F-22A aircraft based on transmitter sound. In addition, there are some TESTER and SALTY DOG Navy aircraft working in the Pax River area with BayWatch. Not much else is currently flying and, as yesterday, it may be due to high winds in the area. Winds are currently at 26 with gusts to 44 mph at BWI and forecast for 50 mph this afternoon.

1130: WARDOG 1 and 2 (OA-10 MD-ANG) coming home to Martin State reporting to Raven Ops on «347.2» and then Tower «297.2»
1135: AXEMAN, flight of two A-10s, coming home to Martin State «347.2» and «297.2» for landing with Tower.
1139: BANDSAW (E3C Tinker AFB OK) to Giant Killer on «249.8» talking about his upcoming mission in W-386, A thru F from 1850-1950Z this afternoon. His first control will be with Langley flights MARLIN 71 and PANAMA 81 and then with DATSUN 71. He wants the MARLIN flight to use frequency 389.1 and PANAMA to use 363.9. All he said about DATSUN is that they'd use the same freqs as the first two flights. These are all F-15s.
1144: DEVIL 11 (F-16 NJ-ANG) with ZDC-Casino «285.4» Their tac freq is «138.425»
1144: BANDSAW with Iron Ops at Langley on «357.1» reporting the same mission statement he gave to Giant Killer.
1147: DEVIL 11 flight of two with ZDC-Kenton «354.15»
1153: DEVIL 11 calling Any Radio on FSS freq «255.4» to announce two F-16s entering VR-1711 at 500 feet and at 480 knots.

1201: RAVEN, flight of 3 A-10s coming home to Martin State «347.2» (No telling where all these A-10s have been. I didn't hear them anywhere until their arrival back to MTN.)
1206: RAVEN flight with Tower on «297.2» for full stop landing and say they're coming in from the southeast. (Still doesn't tell me where they've been.)
1221: DEVIL 11 flight with Dover AFB Approach on «257.875» and heading back to Atlantic City.
1242: CRAB 54 (C-130J MD-ANG) full stop landing at Phillips AAF «126.15»

While those Dyess B-1's are flying through the area try 337.25 or 337.75 for Air/Air. I used to hear them alot when I was in Oklahoma.

Thanks Paul. I may be dust before they come through this area again though. I put a couple of radios on search looking for their air/air during the flight but never found anything. Those freqs may narrow it down "next time" hopefully.

Yesterday, I posted the TFR I found for the upcoming weekend CAP but I missed one that was posted for today. It follows....

NOTAM Number : FDC 6/3201 Issue Date : March 13, 2006 at 23:34 UTC Location : Silver Spring/Calverton, Maryland near WASHINGTON VOR/DME (DCA) Beginning Date and Time : March 15, 2006 at 18:05 UTC Ending Date and Time : March 15, 2006 at 20:15 UTC Reason for NOTAM : Temporary flight restrictions for VIP (Very Important Person) Movement Type : VIP Replaced NOTAM(s) : N/A
Affected Area(s)

Airspace Definition:
TFR Center: 11.9 nautical miles from WASHINGTON VOR/DME(DCA) on the 028 radial (Latitude: 39º02'47"N, Longitude: 76º57'09"W)
Radius: 3 nautical miles
Altitude: From the surface up to but not including 3000 feet MSL
Effective Date(s):
March 15, 2006 at 18:05 UTC (March 15, 2006 at 13:05 EST) - March 15, 2006 at 20:15 UTC (March 15, 2006 at 15:15 EST)

NOTE: The President is travelling via car into Montgomery County. See message #1412 on Sticky Major Events Thread posted at 1323.

1259: FLYER flight (A-10 PA-ANG Willow Grove) on FSS freq «255.4» reports entering SR-800 at 250 knots and at 500 feet....points A-F.
1305: BANDSAW KILO calling HUNTRESS "on AICC" «364.2»
1318: CRAB 54 is doing pattern work around the airfield at Phillips AAF on «126.15» He's going to go around again and then head for MTN (Martin State).
1326: CRAB 54 reports five miles out and heading for landing at Martin State with Tower on «121.3»
1336: BATON 20 (EC-130, 193rd SOG, PA-ANG Harrisburg) landing at Martin State with Tower on «121.3»

1340: If the mission is still on, we should start hearing the MARLIN and PANAMA F-15 flights from Langley in the next few minutes.

1341: REACH 105T to Quantico Base Ops on «355.3». IDs as a C-130 arriving in 20 minutes and will need 20,000 pounds of fuel.
1342: BANDSAW to GK on «249.8» but he's too weak to copy.
1345: PANANA 71 (1st FW Langley), flight of five, with ZDC-Cape Charles «256.8» shortly after takeoff from Langley.
1348: PANAMA 71, flight of five, checks in with GK on «249.8» at FL230, turning toward the airspace (W-386).
1350: MARLIN 81 flight (1st FW Langley) with ZDC-Cape Charles «256.8» at FL210.
1351: MARLIN 81 flight with GK on «249.8» checks in as a flight of four at FL210 and will be MARSA with PANAMA.
Note that BANDSAW had the suffixes reversed for the two Langley flights.
1353: PANAMA flight checks in on «363.9» to BANDSAW as instructed.
1356: MARLIN flight leader on «249.8» tells the flight to "Push 16 Prime" and they come up as planned on «389.1» A minute or so later they make contact with BANDSAW to begin their activity.
We have 9 F-15s now buzzing around in air combat maneuvers under the control of the BANDSAW E3C aircraft.

1417: Refueling boom freq «387.8» active but too weak to copy from here.
1419: And so is boom freq «320.6» (This is where I normally hear the Langley fighters refueling but this activity is very weak this time.)
1422: BANDSAW KILO calling Giant Killer for a frequency check «249.8»
1423: BANDSAW reports PANAMA 71/72/75 will RTB «249.8»
1423: PANAMA 75 tries reporting that fact to GK but has trouble making contact...finally does make contact and reports the RTB info via HEELS. «249.8»
1428: Found a new (to me) refueling boom freq «365.7» Two aircraft - both loud and clear. No callsigns heard yet. For the next several minutes they are heard just chatting back and forth about direction, altitudes, etc. By 1438, I can only hear one of them. They mentioned turning toward the northeast a few minutes ago so apparently one of them has flown out of my listening range.
1434: MARLIN 81 flight checks in with GK on «249.8» to report RTB. They also check in on Langley tac «276.675» Direct HEELS at 14,000 feet.
1435: SPORT 1 (Martin State A-10 travelling callsign) with Pax River Approach on «305.2»
1436: SPORT 1 to BayWatch on «354.8» to say he'll be working with two AXEMAN A-10s. (Very curious about the use of this callsign for normal work.) SPORT 1 reports they'll be working R-6609 from surface to 20,000 feet for the next 30 minutes.
1442: The two aircraft on «365.7» are talking about working in R-6609 and one asks the other if they recognize the SPORT callsign. The other doesn't know who it is either. I can now hear both of them again....very well. I'm suddenly not sure if this is a boom freq or just a tanker interplane/tanker squadron freq. I guess it could also be any old pair of aircraft that just happened to be talking about refueling a bit ago. We'll see soon enough what it is. One of them is setting up at 25,000 feet which always seems to be a good refueling altitude. They still haven't used a callsign...just 1 and 2 to ID each other.
1445: AXEMAN flight reports airborne at 45 after the hour. «347.2»
1448: AXEMAN flight with BayWatch ojn «354.8» and using tac «142.3»
1451: PANAMA 73/74 report ready to RTB and at 20,000 feet to GK on «249.8»
1452: Bollen Range active «237.2»
1459: I believe «365.7» is a tanker interplane freq but don't have a clue for the unit due to the lack of callsigns. Perhaps if I can pick them up elsewhere if/when they begin refueling, I can slap an ID on them. (Heard them chatting until about 1510 and then they disappeared. No refueling. No nothing. I'm reluctant to give this a "boom freq" or even "tanker" tag based on the limited info I got from them.)

1502: Have another U/I freq with a pair of aircraft in air-air chat on «333.35». They are flying at 15,000 feet. The two aircraft are talking about a problem one of them has. The other is flying around him checking the gear door and rudders, etc. Everything checks okay so one of them is going to stay on this freq if he's needed, the other is going to land somewhere. A couple of minutes later, there's a TESTER 04 on this freq (female speaker). It's not one of the aircraft involved in the earlier problem.
1505: The aircraft with the problem from above is with Pax River on «310.55» to announce he's going to land. No callsign heard.
1515: Another Langley flight...Norfolk TRACON «370.925» to ZDC-Cape Charles «256.8», to Giant Killer on «249.8» to BANDSAW assigned freq «363.9». And after all that, the closest I can come to his callsign is CAVE. He's very weak and the band is very noisy today. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
1521: AXEMAN flight out of BayWatch area and with BWI TRACON on «317.425» Reports direct Martin. Then they're over to Raven Ops «347.2» to report 10 out, both Code 1.
1522: Bollen Range has WARDOG talking. «237.2»
1522: DATSUN 71 (1st FW Langley) with ZDC-Cape Charles on «256.8» (This is the second flight mentioned by BANDSAW earlier that would follow the MARLIN/PANAMA flights.)
1525: DATSUN 71, flight of three, into GK's area on «249.8» reporting right turn directly to W-386, Delta area. Trouble contacting GK...extremely weak according to flight leader...as reported by just about everyone today and every day.
1529: DATSUN 71, while on «249.8», says to "Push 16 Prime" and come up on «389.1». One of the DATSUN flight has a problem with fuel venting. They're going to watch it and if it continues he'll be sent home. He tells the aircraft with the problem to push button 17, 2 AUX. Flight leader then makes contact on this freq with BANDSAW. (Note that it's well past the 1950Z time that BANDSAW said earlier he'd be working in W-386. Perhaps that time was just for the MARLIN/PANAMA flights.) There is also someone working the other assigned freq - 363.9 - but I don't have any callsigns there to ID the flight.
1535: The air combat maneuver being performed by the DATSUN flight is against a simulated attack by an SU-27 FLANKER Russian Sukhoi fighter aircraft. (They're still fighting the Cold War. Should we tell them? Easy for the F-15 to defeat...the F-22A would make mincemeat out of an SU-27 before the SU-27 even knew it was in the same airspace.)
1541: U/I fighter tac freq «142.45» active.
1545: RAVEN flight of A-10s at Bollen Range «237.2»
1556: DATSUN 71 flight reports ready to RTB, direct HEELS to GK on «249.8»
1558: That earlier flight that I thought was CAVE is also reporting RTB on «249.8» It still sounds like CAVE.
1600: DATSUN 71 flight with Norfolk TRACON «370.925» as they head to Langley.
That's it for now...END OF REPORT

OK, that's it for now... just thought you might like to see (hear) an Otis trng mission. I have learned quite alot tonight... 1st: Use a notepad. 2nd: I need more scanners (Wife won't like that one), and 3rd: I need an outdoor antenna. I'm hoping that the upcoming BCT-15 will fit the bill for that, but from a cost perspective I think that a 780 or 785 might be better since I just need them for MilAir

Anyways, CHEERS!!!

Way to go Paul! Appreciate the log.

I agree with all three of your points...
1. I buy notepads by the case.
2. Absolutely agree with the need for more scanners. There are never enough when the activity gets heavy...even when you have so many that the speakers are all interfering with each other.
3. And an outdoor antenna?...you betcha...can't live without it. Unfortunately, you always wish you could reach out another 50 miles no matter what you have up there on the roof.

This is just me, but it's clear that having just a notepad isn't going to cut it well when the action really gets firing up, particularly when you have more than 1 scanner going at a time. There are many good PC logging programs for Unidens (nothing works with a GRE radio, so nothing for the 97, I'm afraid...), and that at least will be half the battle. At least you won't have to scribble freqs along with the users and callsigns all at once....still, nice report

If it's going to be as active a weekend as it might be with a scheduled CAP here in the Md.area, that limitation would become painfully clear 73s Mike

Appreciate that Dave. I've wanted to catch that program the last 100 times they've shown it but never managed before tonight. Thanks. Just heard that C-130 screaming in the background as they showed the A-10 landing at Martin State.

Good Morning Everyone,
A little activity in the Duke with the A-10s from the MD ANG....

1030: Wardog 1 (78-0683) & 2 (78-0637) contacted Cleveland Center on 353.85, enter the Duke, and contact Steel 11 on 301.60.
1045: Wardog 1 and 2 are wrapped up with Steel and are headed back South, they might be headed to the Bollen Range. I couldn't find the TAC Freq they were using.

Steel 11 and 12 are talking to each other on 293.70

Thanks Dave...believe the WARDOGS are currently using Raven Ops 143.8 at the end of the 1000 hour. Also hearing a flight of three KC-135 tankers from the 756th ARS at Andrews on squadron freq 351.2. One of them is DC 53.

I've mentioned running across frequency 142.75 in the past and have been trying to get an ID on it. It's not a fighter tac freq but sounds like a transport Command Post freq of some sort. Today, I'm hearing two aircraft on it around 1100. One of them is VENUS 7 and the other is ______66. (Sort of sounded like T-BOLT or VOLT). The only real clue I got about location is that they mentioned meeting up after landing and, in that conversation, mentioned runways 1/19 and 14/32. That's not BWI or Andrews or Martin State or Patuxent or Willow Grove or Atlantic City. I'll need to call up some more runway maps to check out others. Of course, if you know where those are, please shout it out.
The only other clue from their conversation was that, after landing on runway 1, they are going to taxi to the end of the runway and hold at the north hammerhead area. I know the term "hammerhead" is an area at the end of a runway so this may not really be a clue at all.
Edit: I hate it when this happens. Another senile moment....142.75 is the old VHF Venus Control freq at Andrews which fits for one of the callsigns heard. However, I'm still trying to figure out the airport with the runway pair 1/19 14/32.

1123: CODY 01 reports takeoff from Andrews at 1619Z. «378.1» CODY was a callsign used by the old C-141s at Andrews before the 756th converted to KC-135s. It was also used by C-141s at Wright-Patterson. Not sure who it belongs to now.
1137: SALTY DOG 122 with ZDC-Azalea «263.1» reporting on the Richmond 340 radial at 35 miles...then 33 miles.
1139: SUNNY 947 on «141.75» calling Dispatch to report he's 20 minutes out and will be dropping off Codes. (Where is this stuff coming from today? I do have a listing for callsign SUNNY belonging to RC-12s from the 224th Military Intelligence Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah GA but not sure if this is the SUNNY I'm hearing.) The frequency is used for Langley Dispatch.
1155: WARDOG A-10s landing at Martin State «297.2»
1158: Fighter tac freq «140.0» active. This may be Martin State A-10s who have used this as a tac freq in the past. (Interesting conversation about the assignment of VHF tac frequencies. One mentions that Willow Grove just got six freqs assigned and three of them are used by other units in the area. They go on to say they can always use FM freqs but don't get good results there. One of them has a problem with his FM radio and will include it in his writeups at the end of the flight.) This is a flight of four aircraft.

1204: The fighters on 140.0 are RAVEN A-10s from Martin State. They just reported in to Raven Ops on «347.2» where 1/2/3 report Code 1 and 4 is Code 2 for his FM radio.
1208: RAVEN flight of four to Martin State Tower on «297.2» to report full stop landing.
1232: PACK 92 (KC-135R, NH-ANG Pease AFB) to FSS on «255.4». He wants a message passed to his home station at Pease on commercial telephone number 603-430-XXXX to let them know his takeoff time from Charlotte was 1654Z and his ETA back at Pease (PSM-Great Circle Airport, Portsmouth NH) will be 1845Z.
1243: It appears to be parachutists dropping on the Phillips AAF freq «126.15» The aircraft doing the drops IDs himself simply as 4BW. He says DDSO has announced a wind hold so he's coming back in. There is possible related activity on freq «142.9» but I haven't firmly tied it in yet.
1252: HAGAR 70 (C-5 Dover) arriving at Dover in A-2 status with Command Post on «349.4»
1255: Yes, the «142.9» freq is tied in with the parachute drops at Phillips. Female speaker getting winds (10 knots). Getting ready for drop....cleared to drop at 1257.
1255: BULLY flight (F-16 Andrews) airborne and with TRACON «348.725» for climbout. They are using tac freq «143.6» It's a flight of three.

1300: BULLY flight to Pax Approach on «305.2» where they report they'll work for 45 minutes from 3500 to 25000 feet.
1307: BULLY flight starting ground attack exercise at the Pax River Range. «143.6»
1310: Ramp freeze in effect at Andrews per traffic on Andrews Command Post freq «141.55»
1316: FLYER 1, flight of two, with ZNY-Pottstown «278.3» at 12,000 feet.
1320: FLYER 1 flight leaving 12 for 16,000 «278.3»
1325: FLYER 1 flight push U-17 «278.3»
1326: FLYER 1 flight checks in at 16,000 with ZNY-Williamsport «338.3»
Dave, I think they're coming your way to the Duke. There may be another flight of three just ahead or behind the FLYER flight.
1335-44: TRACK 01 (C-21, Air Force Flight Standards, Andrews AFB) trying and trying to make contact with SAM Command on «378.1» No reply to many calls. This is the guy that can get something done about the problem on this freq.
1346: DC 52 (KC-135 Andrews) to Andrews Approach «119.3» says he wants to go to RATTA and just hold there. (RATTA is a military reporting point located at 38-48-50.150N / 076-36-37.890W in MD.)
1352: TRACK 01 makes contact on «378.1» Says he's calling just for a radio check and has "called about 50 times" without getting a reply. "So, apparently your new transmitter is not working too well. I'm just here to check on it."
There is a lot of background to this story of the problem on this freq. Glad to hear they're actively working at a solution. Sorry to hear their first try didn't work. I keep saying it's the antenna.

Continued below if necessary.....

Excellent catch Eric. Thank you. I hadn't gotten around to Dover yet.

1400: DC 52 calling LIBERATOR on squadron freq «351.2» but no reply to a couple of calls.
1401: BULLY flight is still working at Pax. They told Pax they'd be in the area for 45 minutes and it's now just over an hour. Fuel will become a problem soon so they'll have to scoot. «143.6»
1403: Sure enough...BULLY flight reporting "bingo" «143.6»
1405: A-10s off the deck at Martin State «347.2»
1408: DC 53 to LIBERATOR on «351.2»
1409: BULLY flight giving mission report to SOF on «139.9» flight is Code 1, 10 minutes out from Andrews. BULLY thanks SENATE in Japanese...domo arrigato.
1413: BULLY flight of three to Andrews Tower on «349.0» for initial approach.
1413: Another A-10 flight airborne from Martin State at 11 past the hour. «347.2»
1417: BULLY flight reports they'll get out of the way so BRAVE can take off on his scramble «349.0»
1419: BRAVE 65 airborne and with TRACON «348.725» climbing out to FL190...and is on tac «139.7» as expected. It's a flight of two F-16s -- BRAVE 65 and 66.
1424: Push 362.3 for BRAVE «348.725»
1424: BRAVE 65/66 to Washington Center on «362.3» cleared to 21,000 and say they'll continue to monitor Washington Center on this freq. (New Center freq!!!) (Edit: Nope not new...see below)
I wonder if this is a replacement for the 288.35 freq which they didn't seem to use for Washington Center check-in to the GUARD DOG CAP this time as they usually do.)
1427: BRAVE flight makes contact with HUNTRESS on «139.7» where they do their DATALINK check to the bullseye, check authentications and get set up to work. (I'm just barely hearing HUNTRESS on this freq - not well enough to copy.)
1431: BRAVE 65 says JADOC wants BRAVE to check his gateway. «139.7» BRAVE 65 and 66 will be counter-rotating CAPs.
(We knew there was a CAP coming for this weekend and that it would start at this time. We don't know who will man the CAP after this first shift by the DC-ANG F-16s. Will it be Langley or Eglin F-15s?)
1435: Have HUNTRESS freq «260.9» freq active with what sounds like a tanker coming to the area.
1439: TANKER 11 calling HUNTRESS on «260.9» reports on station at FL250 and wants to know if BRAVE will be on this freq for boom. Can't hear ground so don't know the reply.
1442: BRAVE tells HUNTRESS on «139.7» they're pushing over to 260.9 and say the same to Washington Center on «362.3»
1443: BRAVE 65/66 check in on «260.9»
1444: BRAVE contacts CAPITOL on «139.7» and confirms they are getting tracks through the gateway.
1445: BRAVE reports tally the tanker...5 miles in trail, weapons safe. «260.9»
1445: AXEMAN A-10 flight from Martin State in Pax River area on «305.2»
1446: MCGRUFF flight (A-10 CT-ANG Bradley) with ZDC-Casino on «285.4»
1449: TANKER 11 clears BRAVE to contact the boom «260.9»
1451: BRAVE 65 disconnects after taking 4,000 pounds from TANKER 11 and 66 is cleared to contact the boom. «260.9»
1455: BRAVE 66 disconnects after taking 4,500 pounds «260.9» and the flight goes back to «139.7»
1458: Came in late but there's a single F/A-18 going somewhere that will arrive an hour late and will need 10,000 pounds of fuel when he gets there. His callsign is WILDCAT 13. He gives a commercial number of 217-523-XXXX for FSS to call to provide that info. «255.4» (I guess I could look up area code 217 and find out which bases are in that area to figure out where he's going. Maybe later.) WILDCAT should be an F/A-18 from Oceana NAS. (Area code 217 is in Springfield IL....Scott AFB?)

1501: BRAVE says they'll change to Washington Center on 135.25 and then finally realize it should be 135.525 and indeed go there to check in. «260.9»
1503: Earlier, the BRAVE flight changed from gatekey 6 to gatekey 5 on their datalink and now are reporting timber and wood sour so are going back to gatekey 6. «260.9» Timer and wood sweet on gatekey 6 for both aircraft. BRAVE 65 wants HUNTRESS to pass to JADOC that their link was not working (gateway 5). They also mention being up here for another 3 hours so we don't have to worry yet who will replace them.
1506: BRAVE tells CAPITOL (controller back at Andrews) he's glad to hear him «135.525» and tells him if he comes up on 260.9 he can talk to them there.
1511: TANKER 11 calling RENEGADE (Customs) for radio check on «260.9» and gets no reply to a couple of calls but tells HUNTRESS he did hear RENEGADE responding to BRAVE 65 (below).
1511: BRAVE 65 tells RENEGADE he's 3x5 «260.9»
1518: AXEMAN A-10 flight back to Martin State and landing with Tower on «297.2»

Checking out of the logging business at this time (1525) unless something happens to warrant more. THE END

(Ref below) Yes, it is listed as Cedar Lake now that I look at my book. So why don't I have that in my scan rotation? Overlooked it obviously. I wonder though if they'll use 362.3 now instead of 288.35 for entrance to the CAP?

I wasn't smart enough to do that Eric. I was going to check all 28,000 airports one by one until I found it.
