RG-8X looks good but above 30MHz it gets pretty lossy, it was never intended for VHF work and when you get up around 800MHz you may as well use a garden hose. That's why I recommend RG-6U quad shield, it gives the best bang for the buck and the 75 ohm impedance is inconsequential. It's made for CATV work and doesn't care about the signal source, try it, you'll like it.
One more thing, "that putty stuff" has a nasty habit of drying out and cracking with age. I've seen it in action and had to reseal all the connections at several installations where it was used. Cheap black vinyl tape works best stretch-spiral wrapped forward and back over itself Army style. Yup, that's what they use and how they do it so if it holds up in THAT environment it'll work for you.
