Registered a new to me 996T today on the Uniden site to do the upgrades, but when I hit the Get key or what it is the site fails. Has anyone else come across this or know what steps to take?

Upgrades for what? The 996T is ancient, it's not capable of any DMR or NXDN or ProVoice.

Just wanted to bring the software up to date. Other user never did updates. I now have it to 1.04.12 but can't get past there with ought the activation key.

In the firmware update link you posted it says: Run the BC_VUP application you installed in Step 4. Follow all on-screen instructions. If you are updating from version prior to V3.00.00 you must enter the V3 Registration Key when prompted.

The OP is updating from 1.04.12 and therefore needs a registration key to update the firmware to version 3. This key is a 24 character string consisting of numbers and is generated from the the scanner's ESN and checksum. Only Uniden can provide this code.

Opened a support case with Uniden. See if they reply. I know I can use it w/o all the updates, but figured I would just get it up to snuff before I put it in service.

Years ago, I had to update the firmware for a lot of 396T and 996T scanners for firefighters. Updating from 1.xx.xx to 2.xx.xx and from 2.xx.xx to 3.xx.xx were considered major updates and required a key to do it. For each scanner, I had to login to my.uniden.com and enter the serial number, electronic serial number, date of purchase, and place of purchase to obtain the update key. The 396T didn't have an electronic serial number and I had to run an electronic serial number loader to add it to the scanner. Latest firmware for 996T is 3.02.00

Maybe, the keys are no longer required. Try doing it without the keys. You will need the BC_VUP 2.0.0.7 firmware updater. I tried to attach it for you, but it is too large. I have the 3,02.00 SCN firmware file. Please let me know if you need it.

Yikes! Shows how much I know. I never even thought of updating my 996T, which I've had since 2008. It always did what I wanted without issues. Probably not much point now - my local and surrounding departments have gone "E" and the 996T is used mostly for analog comms now.

Funny I never thought of just trying it.... 🫤 I shall report back.

Thank you so much for your patience as we worked to get to get to your request.

Unfortunately, the V3 registration key is an option that is no longer available, as this is a discontinued unit.

That is the reason for the error you are getting, as unfortunately the link is no longer available.

We truly do apologize for the inconvenience, and greatly appreciate your patience!

Thank You,
Uniden Customer Support Team

That's a shame. Seems it should not be a big deal to keep firmware updates available for discontinued models? It's not like maintaining a parts inventory for older units.

Yeah. Does stink. I was trying since the original owner didn't. Scanner seems to be working ok though, so, we shall deal with it as is.

Appreciate all the responses.

It shouldn't be a problem restoring the link. When Uniden says we appreciate your patience, does that mean they are working on it?

My curiosity had me look at myuniden.com/my account, because I updated my BCD396T a couple of years ago. The information below is still showing on the "All My Scanners" page. Maybe this will help:

Important Firmware Notice
  • Firmware updates for the BCD396T and BCD996T scanners are now located on your All My Scanners page. When you register a scanner, the latest firmware version available for that scanner is linked in the Latest Firmware column. These downloads are no longer kept in the My Downloads area.
  • If you have not yet entered an ESN and ESN checksum for your scanner, the latest firmware link will be to the firmware version that enables these functions on your scanner. You must apply this update before applying a Version 2 or later update.
  • Once you apply the version that provides the ESN and checksum, register that information for the scanner. After you enter this information you will be given a link to get a Version 2 registration key for that scanner.
  • Once you retrieve your Version 2 registration key, you will be given a link to get the latest Version 2 firmware.
  • Read all release notes for each download before applying the update. They provide important information and instructions for applying the update, as well as troubleshooting tips in case you run into a problem.

It has been a long time since I updated a 396T or 996T. I see that the keys are still listed on the "All My Scanners" page. What I don't know is if the facility is still there for generating the keys.
