Hi,

Today we will be taking a look at a few P25 control channel OSP messages seen on the Saskatchewan PPSTN.

Looking at the first message we can see the opcode is 0x95 and that is followed the MFID 00.
These are then followed by: 01 00 00 00 = FNE ID 16777216.
It would be great if Unitrunker 2 could display this FNE ID and then I could add a label to it.

Prior to every 0x95 message seen on the control channel an opcode 0x92 ISP message like this one is sent by an SU.
opcode 0x92 = Unit Data Channel Request, 00 01 00 01 00 = FNE ID 16777472, 00 21 C1 05 = RID 2212101, 97 92 = CRC.

The opcode 0x95 OSP message from the control channel appears to be a "response message" to the 0x92 ISP "request" message.

Following the final 0x94 message an SU will then send a 0x93 ISP message like this one.
opcode 0x93 = Unit Cancel Data Service Request, 00 01, 20=Terminate Resource Assignment, 00 01 00, 21 C2 B1 = RID 2212529, A7 4A = CRC.

I would like to thank Rick for his recent work updating Unitrunker 2 to display the opcode 0x98 message sent by the Saskatchewan PPSTN.

Those control channel messages now look like this:

-A0 00 98 00 FF FF FD 21 C1 03 F0 02 Acknowledge Response of Status Update Request for I 21C103 to I FFFFFD
-98 00 01 00 FF FF FC 21 C1 03 F8 5A Status Update FFFFFC -> 21C103 Msg 0100
-A0 00 98 00 FF FF FC 21 C1 03 86 B6 Acknowledge Response of Status Update Request for I 21C103 to I FFFFFC
-A0 00 98 00 FF FF FC 21 C1 03 86 B6 Acknowledge Response of Status Update Request for I 21C103 to I FFFFFC

Unitrunker 2 now displays the FNE ID 16777215 and so I was able to add a label to it.

Cheers to you Rick!

Thank you!

I don't think that's a valid ID. That would 25 bits long. The size of the field is 24 bits.

P25 ID range tops out at 16777215, and the last few are generally reserved for system functions, not subscribers.

I just downloaded the Unitrunker version 2. I have been using Version 1 for a very long time. Is there any way I can transfer the RIDS/Systems data from V1 to V2?

Ok, thank you Rick, for helping me with what I had thought was an FNE ID.

Today we will be looking at Harris Super-Patches and their status on the Saskatchewan PPSTN.

Unitrunker 2 is showing the unencrypted Harris Super-Patches. Key-ID=00, 80=open
These Super-Patches were seen in both the calls and patches windows.
-B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 98 EE 96 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 0098 status 78
-B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 99 FE B7 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 0099 status 78
-B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 9A CE D4 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 009A status 78
-B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 9B DE F5 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 009B status 78
-B0 A4 00 07 FB 00 00 00 00 00 79 AB Patch Super 07FB drops all status 00
-B0 A4 00 07 FB 00 00 00 00 00 79 AB Patch Super 07FB drops all status 00
-B0 A4 00 07 FB 00 00 00 00 00 79 AB Patch Super 07FB drops all status 00

Unitrunker 2 is not showing the encrypted Harris Super-Patches. Key-ID=0037, ALG-ID=84=AES.
These messages were found in the logging file, but nothing was seen in the calls or patches windows.
-B0 A4 6A 07 F7 00 37 84 00 42 9C 54 Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops G 0042 status 6A
-B0 A4 6A 07 F7 00 37 84 00 3E 23 4F Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops G 003E status 6A
-B0 A4 6A 07 F7 00 37 84 00 42 9C 54 Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops G 0042 status 6A
-B0 A4 6A 07 F7 00 37 84 00 3E 23 4F Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops G 003E status 6A
-B0 A4 00 07 F7 00 00 00 00 00 72 48 Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops all status 00
-B0 A4 00 07 F7 00 00 00 00 00 72 48 Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops all status 00
-B0 A4 00 07 F7 00 00 00 00 00 72 48 Harris Patch Super 07F7 drops all status 00

We can see that the unencrypted patch shows "adds" for these messages and the encrypted patch shows "drops" for these messages.

Now we will be looking at the status of these Harris Super-Patches.

PPSTN Super-Patch IDs are from 2030 to 2050.
Unitrunker 2 shows the third octet as, "status", but is this octet the status?

I decided it was time for me to go back and take a look at all of my PPSTN Super-Patch logging data.

After taking a closer look at the octets in the 3rd, 4th and 5th positions, it was the
relationship between those 3 octets for the patch IDs 2043 and 2044, that first stood out.
-B0 A4 (78) +(07 FB) 00 00 80 00 9B DE F5 Harris Patch Super (07FB) adds G 009B "status 78"
-B0 A4 (79) +(07 FC) 00 37 84 18 51 02 BF Harris Patch Super (07FC) drops G 1851 "status 79"
Then I found more like these in the logging files and those helped with filling in the blanks.

This is what I have come up with so far.

"status" and Super-Patch ID
3rd octet and 4th/5th octets.
61 = 097 and 07EE = 2030 Hits 178
62 = 098 and 07EF = 2031 Hits 185
63 = 099 and 07F0 = 2032 Hits 61
64 = 100 and 07F1 = 2033 Hits 37
65 = 101 and 07F2 = 2034 Hits 145
66 = 102 and 07F3 = 2035 Hits 88
67 = 103 and 07F4 = 2036 Hits 51
68 = 104 and 07F5 = 2037 Hits 113
69 = 105 and 07F6 = 2038 Hits 81
6A = 106 and 07F7 = 2039 Hits 68
75 = 117 and 07F8 = 2040 Hits 67
76 = 118 and 07F9 = 2041 Hits 199
77 = 119 and 07FA = 2042 Hits 130
78 = 126 and 07FB = 2043*Hits 161
79 = 127 and 07FC = 2044*Hits 157
80 = 128 and 07FD = 2045 Hits 78
81 = 129 and 07FE = 2046 Hits 273
82 = 130 and 07FF = 2047 Hits 129
83 = 131 and 0800 = 2048 Hits 15
84 = 132 and 0801 = 2049 Hits 715
8F = 143 and 0802 = 2050 Hits 540

I cannot explain the status jump of 11 (0B) between patch IDs 2039 and 2040 and again between patch IDs 2049 and 2050.
I cannot explain why the status of these patches begins at 61 (97) and ends at 8F (143).

So, the patch ID 2050 has a higher status that the patch ID 2030? Or is it the other way around? See the hit counts.
Is this done so that if 2 or more patches are in use at the same time there will be an order to their priority on the network?

Cheers to you!

We can see that the unencrypted patch shows "adds" for these messages and the encrypted patch shows "drops" for these messages.
A few words on terminology. Unitrunker uses the word "adds" when a group is added to a patch and the word "drops" when a group is removed from a patch - and the phrase "drops all" when a patch is completely cleared.

If the program thinks a patch was dropped, you won't see it. If you think the program is handling Harris style patches incorrectly, please speak up.

Hi, Rick

Yes, I do think that Unitrunker 2 is handling Harris Super-Patches incorrectly.

This is an example of a unencrypted Harris Super-Patch that was seen in both the Calls and Patches windows.
This one shows "adds" and so it was displayed by the program.

16:31:43.279 047 7 -B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 9A CE D4 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 009A status 78
16:31:43.343 047 7 -B0 A4 78 07 FB 00 00 80 00 9B DE F5 Harris Patch Super 07FB adds G 009B status 78

Now you will see 8 encrypted Harris Super-Patches that were not seen in the Calls or Patches windows.
All 8 show "drops" and all 8 went unseen. In addition to this we can see how the "status" for each patch changes.
The program appears to think that these patches are being dropped when in fact they are being added.

I think that the third octet, I will call the "status octet" is of importance in that when it is 00 the patch drops, but
if this "status octet" is anything but 00 the patch "adds". The octets in the seventh and eighth positions indicate
what I will call the "real status" of the patch being that it is protected or unprotected.

When the the "status octet" along with the two "real status" octets are all 00 the patch in fact "drops" or "drops all" and
then and only then should the patch go unseen in the Calls/Patches windows.

Rick, I believe that you are able to "fix" this Harris patch problem.

The program should also display the talk-groups that are patched together.

March 1, 2024 this was not seen in the Calls and Patches windows of Unitrunker 2.

It appears there was a Harris Patch Super that was missed, and its status must have been 70=112.

March 6, 2024 appeared to be the PPSTN Harris Patch Super testing day.

Wednesday March 6th was one of those days when I think that someone inside the PPSTN has been reading my most recent posts here at RR.

Cheers.

Hi, Rick

These messages and many more like them were seen on the Saskatchewan PPSTN site #71 on Thursday March 7, 2024.

All the local RCMP RIDs did this same thing on this day.

As can be seen, Unitrunker 2 did not show the correct information. I have added some details.

See the screen shots.

RR member Wolffe at Saskatoon has also reported seeing messages like these, but he did not post them for us to see.

I have saved the logging file from that day.

Your thoughts about what data would have been sent on those voice channels.

OTAP?

Cheers to you Rick!

Yes, I do think that Unitrunker 2 is handling Harris Super-Patches incorrectly.
Just FWIW, I posted the nature of Harris patching in the Duke Energy thread, if you want to see how the PDU is documented and read. Just for disclaimer, I didn't look through any of these to see if they are 'interpreted' correctly or not, but figured this is good reference, if needed.

P25 ID range tops out at 16777215, and the last few are generally reserved for system functions, not subscribers.
Hi, GTR8000:

Thanks for your FNE 16777215 information. I seem to have found it in use on the Saskatchewan PPSTN. It appears to be used for OTAP/OTAR on this system.

How did I find the FNE 16777215?

I had been seeing many new data grants on the Saskatchewan PPSTN on March 7th and 8th. See the screen shot.
As each and every RCMP radio was turned on, many data grants appeared. 6 grants for the portable RIDs, 12 or more for the mobile RIDs.
Municipal policing utilizes the same Harris radios with the same talk-groups and Key IDs, but they were excluded for some reason.

I decided to have a closer look at these messages by utilizing Unitrunker 2.

Take a look at the control channel screen shot and you will see the FNE ID is 16777212.

These are the messages sent on the tower TX voice channel #93=138.4650 MHz. The FNE ID is 16777215.

As can be seen only 9 of the 12 octets from the first block of these multi-block extended messages are displayed by the program.
Unitrunker 2 does not show these 0x0A messages as errors.
Opcode 0x0A=U2U V USR "EXT", MFID A4=Harris, FF FF FC=FNE=16777215 and 21 C1 13=RID=2212115=portable FQ2.
It appears that Unitrunker 2 sees the opcode 0x23 messages as errors.

I believe that the unseen part of these messages could very well be OTAP or OTAR messaging being sent by FNE ID 16777215.

Cheers to GTR8000:

Opcode 0x0A=U2U V USR "EXT", MFID A4=Harris, FF FF FC=FNE=16777215 and 21 C1 13=RID=2212115=portable FQ2.
Thank you for sharing. Some minor points:

My hex calculator says FFFFFC is 16777212.

Beware these are link control messages (see the "LC" prefix) found on traffic channels which are structured slightly different from TSBKs found on the control channel.

Rick, I thank for the help with the FNE hex and those LC messages.

Next, I must also thank RR member lwvmobile for providing us with the TIA documentation about the Harris super-group patches.

Now we will be taking a look "inside" those Saskatchewan PPSTN Super-Group Patches.
Harris Group Regroup (GRG) Explicit Encryption Commands.

Octet 0=opcode=BO=1011 0000=SUP GRP PCH.
Octet 1=MFID=A4=1010 0100=Harris.

Octet 2 is the GRG. Below are the GRG options recently seen on the PPSTN. Bits 7, 6 and 5 were always the same.
GRG-Option is 6A=0110 1010<-Bit count is right to left start Bit is 0 and left-most is Bit 7.
GRG-Option is 6F=0110 1111
GRG-Option is 70=0111 0000
GRG-Option is 71=0111 0001
GRG-Option is 72=0111 0010
GRG-Option is 73=0111 0011
GRG-Option is 74=0111 0100

Octet 7 is ALGID

84=AES=encryption

Octets 8 and 9 are the Talk-group.
Octets 10 and 11 are TSBK/CRC.

At this point I will go back and take another look at octet 2, the GRG.
Rick, I think that this just may be the Unitrunker 2 Harris Super-Patch (Adds) fix for the PPSTN.

If octet 2 is 60 to 79=two-way regroup, address, activate. (Adds)
If octet 2 is 6A to 6F=two-way regroup, address, activate. (Adds)

I really like seeing this.

Looks like the RCMP F-Division wanted to see if you had fixed the program.

Enjoy!

Hi, Rick

Unitrunker 2 is adding what I call "Ghost Channels" to Saskatchewan PPSTN sites.
RR member Wolffe in Saskatoon was first to report seeing this and then I began to see this on two PPSTN sites.

You can see below that the program does not decode these "extended" messages from the FNE correctly.
The program sees the message is an (IDCG) Individual Data Channel Grant, but then fails to decode it correctly.

37 FD 00 FF FF FC 82 10 04 00 FE 80

FALSE-Individual Data Channel Grant WACN 00000 Sys 000 ID FFFFFC I FFFFFC -> I 21C112 channel 1-200(0.00000) channel 1-200(0.00000)
TRUE-IDCG 00A=WACN, 0A=Syst ID, FNE 16777212, RID 2212114 channel (00 5D)=93=138.4650 MHz,(03 7B)=891=142.4550 MHz=correct decode.

37 FD 00 21 C1 12 82 10 44 00 DB 21

TRUE-IDCG 00A=WACN, 0A=Syst ID, FNE 16777212, RID 2212114 channel (00 30)=48=138.2400 MHz,(03 4E)=846=142.2300 MHz=correct decode.

37 FD 00 FF FF FC 82 10 04 00 FE 80
00 00 A0 0A FF FF FC 21 C1 12 00 DB
02 CD 00 A0 0A 21 C1 12 A4 8C 9A A1
FALSE-Individual Data Channel Grant WACN 00000 Sys 000 ID FFFFFC I FFFFFC -> I 21C112 channel 1-200(0.00000) channel 1-200(0.00000)
TRUE-IDCG 00A=WACN, 0A=Syst ID, FNE 16777212, RID 2212114 channel ,(00 DB)=219=139.0950 MHz,(02 CD)=141.5850 MHz=correct decode.

Every time Unitrunker 2 incorrectly decodes these messages it adds another "Ghost Channel" to site 71.
These 3 channels are the only correct channels for PPSTN site 71.
We have been deleting the unwanted "Ghost Channels" when we see them.

When you get some time, a fix for this would be great.

Thanks

I *believe* that I'm beginning to see simulselect patching on our local L3H P25 system that *may* not have been visible earlier - two tgs joined to a single dynamic tg in the 65xxx range. Not a lot of patching is commonly done on this system so I may have missed it previously, but the Moto P25 and Smartzone systems that I can also receive locally routinely patch tgs together to conserve dispatch resources.

That's interesting, I was thinking that maybe was happening here, but some of the "ghost channels" are 0.0000 mhz and some are in the 2 meter amateur band.

What I have happening are random freqs and some are bleed over from other towers. I have 2 strong towers and I am seeing channels from one being reported on the other.
