I live in Charlotte, about 5 miles from downtown. In process of setting up VIPER on my SDS100.

I see a Heathway Site in the database. Any other sites I should add? I also see there is a tower in Huntersville. Mostly want to listen to NCHP. Any tips from those more experienced with VIPER are greatly appreciated.

If you are on the south side of Charlotte, Pineville site is very active. I'm in NW Charlotte and monitor Heathway and Huntersville sites. Haven't tried any other sites.

Hello y’all. New to trunking. Is there a list that specifies what frequency is for what? I am in Pasquotank and trying to get Elizabeth city frequencies and it’s doesn’t differentiate between police and Fire. Thank you

In trunking all the frequencies are pooled so to speak and the controller assigns them on the go. A conversation can start on one frequency and end on another. The talkgroup is what you want to monitor. You see terms like "trunk tracker" because the radio is "tracking" what frequency it needs to listen on to monitor the talkgroup you have selected. This is why a regular old analog scanner can't follow trunked systems. Typically (for a p25 system like viper) you just need to enter the control channel for your local site into your scanner and the talkgroups you want to listen to. Some scanners are different. Tell us what model you're using and I'm sure different people can chime in and get you going.

OK. Thank you for the help in getting me going. I am using a uniform BCT15x Which I understand is pretty difficult the program. But I will be working on it.

Just FYI, a BCT15X will not work on Viper. You'll need a P25 capable scanner such as a Uniden 436/536, 996 or SDS 100/200 or Whistler equivalent P25 scanner.

Can anyone help me get a better understanding of Viper? In Ashe county there are 4 Viper sites Deep Gap, Jefferson Mtn., Phoenix Mtn. and Rich Hill. At times the county sheriff dept. will simulcast their VHF freq. over Viper. My question is why do I only hear them on 1 Viper site? I'm within range of the Jefferson Mtn. and Phoenix Mtn. sites both, but it seems as their radio traffic only comes across the Phoenix Mtn. site.

VIPER towers only carry traffic on it if a radio is affiliated to it. I assume the patch is coming from the dispatch center, which affiliates with the Phoenix Mtn. site. If there are not other VIPER users on that channel on any of the other towers, the traffic wont be carried over the other towers

What tg is it coming across your scanner? Do you have wildcard or something where it scans everything on?

Those are Highway patrol channels, so somehow they are programmed in your scanner. Try locking them out

Is there any way to overcome the NCSHP dispatchers using multi select? For Instance I live in Trp F Dist. 2 , but i'm hearing Trp. F Dist. 4 traffic on the Dist. 2 TG. Or is it just something I'll have to deal with?

There is no way to bypass a multi-select. Even the end-users are subject to the same chatter from patched and MSEL'd channels.
