I have a VHF Motorola XTS5000. I want to program in one bank of just marine channels. What sixteen channels should I select? I am close enough to the Minneapolis Saint Paul area, and the Mississippi River, that certainly Marine 16 and 22A should be two of them, but what about the remaining channels?

6, 9, 13, 16, 22A, would be a good place to start. If you are just looking for stuff to listen to, then find out if the run a VTS in the area and load that channel in.

Thank you everyone for the replies. For now I have a Marine Zone with the following channels

6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22A, 23, 81, 82, and 83

I will give this a try in the XTS5000 and use my scanners to see if any other marine channels seem to be in use in my area. I do think that the above 16 channels should be a good starting point, though.

I don't know about 8, 15 or 81, 82, 83. You might want to use 68, 70, 72 just for the chit chat by boaters. I don't think I've heard much on 8, 15 and the upper CG freq's might hear someone on 83 from time to time.
