Hello,

Thinking about a Handheld unit.

Don't need digital, but do want Trunking, and coverage of all the major bands.

Would also like at least 1,00 or so "memory slots".

What (new ?) GRE scanner would you experts out there suggest that I consider ?

Any Unidens ? Which would you buy ?

Thanks,
B.

Pro-97 if you like banks and easy programming with software. It does LTR, EDACS, and MOT trunking. Mil-air(225-399mhz am), and of course-conventional scanning with ctcss and dpl. About the new GRE's, you'll have to read the postings on them. There is also the BC246, which has more frequencies and a different way of programming. This involves more button pushes, etc.. When I'm mobile, the less time taken to change what is scanning, the better.

Larry

I own the 97 and 246, and I would not want to be without the 97. The 246 is ok, but nothing special to me. The Pro97 is a great deal when it's on sale for $149.99.

I also have both the 97 and 246, both have their good points, the 97 scans through the systems faster than the 246 which is a plus the 246 is a lot smaller a plus of it's own. The Bank and Channel storage system on the 97 is more traditional, the DMA system on the 246 once you get used to it offers some advantages especially when storing TG's from ID Search mode. For the price the 97 can't be beat, the new GRE PSR-300 is sort of a Pro-97 Mk II it should be available next month at around $200, same price as the Pro-97 not on sale.

I have the pro97 and the BCT15 (which is the mobile/desk version of the 246) ... i'm gonna have to disagree with the other posters, I like the pro97 but I LOVE the bct15 in terms of how the frequencies are stored ... I never did like banks, and so what if you have to hit 1 or 2 extra buttons to switch between groups :) ... and both are easy to program with software and cable .... just my 2 cents, good luck :)

edit: I also forgot to mention that the bct15 and 246 will do multi site EDACS systems with the same shared pool of talk group ids ... which on the pro97 isn't possible, you would have to put each site in a different bank (because of the LCNs) and then put the TGIDs into each bank as well, it sucks ... :)

I would go with the PSR-300. It is strongly suspected that the PRO-97 won't be able to handle rebanding.

Yeah I would wait for the PSR-300 also especially if you are going to be moitoring Mot systems. The Pro-97 isn't going to support rebanding (I think RS issued something stating this).

side note, i wish the psr-300 didn't have blue buttons haha ... other than that it looks almost like a replica of the pro97 (which i guess thats the idea) ... go for the 246!! the dynamic memory will not let you down :)
