Brown County Fire patched to WISCOM

I am not sure if this has been discussed so just an FYI. I don't listen to WISCOM much but while listening to it today on the De Pere tower (Brown County) I was hearing calls on 154.370 Brown County Fire Paging also coming over WISCOM. I'm not really sure why this is patched. I will continue to listen to see if it is only console traffic or if it is the entire channel.

Is it possible you heard traffic coming over TG - 25510 - Brown County Scan?

I actually don't know what talk group it was since I was listening with my Astro Saber. I wasn't aware that there was a Brown County Scan talk group. This must be what it was. It is actually handy to listen to since sometimes where I am at I can not hear units since Brown County Fire is simplex but if I listen on WISCOM I can.

That is the safest way to use a real radio as a scanner since you don't run into ethical and legal issues with system keys.

I have done much research and have found that only the 800 Astro Sabers can be flashed to run on a P25 systems. Something about some hardware limits and OBT trunking, whereas the 800 flash has a standard band plan. Its too bad, the Saber is a neat radio and would be fun to use on VHF trunking.

Need Better Coverage

Dunn County is having significant problems with coverage. Virtually no portable coverage and spotty mobile coverage particularly in the center of the county. Otherwise I think they would have already migrated.

The state is working to increase capability on the 800mhz side by adding additional sites over the next few years. For this year adding a Milwaukee South site, Downtown Madison, and Chilton up in Calumet County to improve 800 coverage

Help Programming BCD996T

Hello

I have tried to program my radio for WISCM P25 with no luck.I have updated my firmware and am using ARC 996 Pro along with radio reference to program. I live in Sun Prairie and am using the Columbus site and Dane county IDs.Signal strength is strong according to my radio meter havent heard a thing. Would appreciate any help to get me going.

Thanks Andy

Try the Deerfield site, that's the primary site for eastern Dane. Also, what do you mean by using the Dane Co IDs? If you're looking for Dane county traffic, they are not on WISCOM now. I mostly only hear State Patrol (simulcast) when I'm monitoring.

Thanks for the reply When i said Dane county IDs I meant to say Talkgroups that are listed on RR.
I will try Deerfield and State Patrol.

Thanks again for the help

As was mentioned Dane is not on WISCOM, but you will hear traffic on some of the county scan TG's and the Statewide TG's have been active for testing. I would sugest using the ID search function, I have picked up several DOJ and DMA TG's this way.

I second the suggestion by kc0wkp. There's only a handful of counties that use WISCOM for traffic (not including County Scan), and even FEWER than use it regularly as their primary system. So far, the only areas that use WISCOM as their primary system (that I'm sure of) are Fond Du Lac, Iowa County, and UW-Milwaukee. There may be a couple others, but because the system is still in it's infancy, your best option is to search for talkgroups. This also alleviates programming all talkgroups individually, for now ;)

Hi

I just got a hit on ID 14010 so all is well here.

Thanks a lot Andy

Yes, 14010 Dodge County Scan and 111 Deforest WSP will be the most active TG's on the Deerfield site.

Scanner Advice

I would like to purchase a scanner in the near future and was wondering which brand/model is the best for what I would like to accomplish. I currently reside in the Wausau area and often travel north to Vilas County. Sometimes I travel south to IL. I was wondering what scanner you would recommend for my vehicle so I could pick up WI State Patrol as well as Vilas Co Sheriff when I travel. Do I need an external antenna for my vehicle like the state patrol and other agencies do for their radios? Is there a particular scanner I need for WISCOM? Please help! Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello, Coug.

My suggestion is to try the Uniden BCD396XT for one reason: you want to listen to Vilas county and those guys love the encryption button. Don't get me wrong, I love my PSR-500, but it does not mute the audio when receiving an encrypted digital transmission where the Uniden will. For that reason only, and for where you said you would be listening, I would recommend the Uniden. Unless you like listening to Donald Duck.

If you need an easier interface Uniden makes the Home Patrol and GRE makes the PSR-800. The PSR-800 will mute encrypted audio. I don't know if the Home Patrol will.
