The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone out there has any ideas or leads on a dual bracket for the XPR5000 series? I'm limited on space (single cab Toyota Tacoma) for mounting and found a side mount that hooks to the seat bolts like this and was thinking of trying to mount two XPR mobiles on it stacked since I will have one for VHF and one for UHF:

Wanting to attempt something like this, but with one bracket:

Any ideas or leads?

Most just use a piece of flat stock and bend it and drill holes. Even the single bracket will hold the radio out further than most like it. A piece of 1 1/2" aluminum from any big box store will work fine along with a 1/4" drill bit.

Tessco used to sell a radio "stacking kit" which looked like black "Erector" set pieces, but it spaces the radios out a lot top to bottom and side to side, but did work well on many vessels and vehicles in the oil industry. We also used to use a lot of industrial grade Velcro (yes, actual Velcro brand), and then mount the one radio with a low profile bracket below or above depending on if it was going into a vehicle or vessel. Worked even better until you need to separate those radios.

Thank you both for the feedback. Unfortunately, I went out and looked at the truck again (thankfully before buying anything) and realized that I've got a bench seat instead of buckets which means the mount I was going to use is a no-go.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board and that unfortunately, the idea of a remote head install is back on top.

I appreciate your knowledge and ideas!

This was the install on my old truck, a radio shop in DFW used two cross metal bars, bolted into the bottom of the open factory console then used the control head mounting brackets to attach. I will see if I can find some pictures of the exact way it was done.

".. trying to mount two XPR mobiles..." Are you trying to mount the radios, or just the control heads?
@AI7PM I was going to be mounting the radios; but since I don't have bucket seats for that mount it looks like I'll be doing a remote head install on these now.

@Stephen I like that. My shifter is floor mounted. I only wish I had a console area like that.

This is the same interior as my truck and what I'm working with:

I'm thinking since it's a single cab I'll mount the radio bodies along with my fuse breakout panel behind the seat on the back wall of the cab and run remote heads to the shifter area. Thinking of fabricating a mounting solution for at least one head in the little open area between the driver/passenger seat area and maybe the other in front of the shift lever in the cubby area below the climate control.

Here’s a few pictures of my radio installation in a Tacoma double cab, might give you some ideas. The remote heads are mounted using Ram mounts, the radio bodies are behind the back seat.

@LowbandGuy that is a great idea. Never have worked with Ram mounts. I'll do some research. Did you custom fabricate the head mounts, or did you buy them that way? Granted, each radio is different but trying to do this at least semi-correctly the first time around.

I personally use 67Designs mounts. They use smaller balls, therefore use less space. They have a variety of tracks and arms. Really well made stuff. 100% made in America, if that matters to you.

This is my FJ, but those pillar mounts work on many Toyota pillars... if you're willing to loose the Oh-****-Handle.

The XPR5550 is mounted on a Ram mounting bracket, the Yaesu radio is fastened to a piece of flat bar bent to the shape that worked then painted. I have a similar set up in my Super Duty with an XPR5550 and a CDM1250 only it’s the bracket being L shaped to fasten both radios to it

Beautiful setup. Thanks for the ideas. Just waiting on funding now to purchase everything and trying to find the best deals on 5550s.

Hi

I love this setup!! Could you please tell me the exact Ram Mount part numbers that you have bolted to the right side of the console for the XPR 5550? I would like to order these and want to make so I get the right parts. Thank you

Greetings! Sorry for the delay I was away on vacation and not checking messages. Here are the Ram part numbers, the arm is 5” in length as you probably know there are other lengths available. Best of luck with your project!
