Log 6/14/15 - Portland, Oregon
BCD536HP with AntennaCraft ST2 antenna

This is my first foray into Lo-band since 1980, so I don't have much to offer today, but I did log these two confirmed hits:

39.4000 162.2 CHP Orange 1 - San Diego
45.0200 192.8 CHP Orange 2 - Los Angeles

Lots of other hits on the sporadic E event from Noon to 2PM local time today. Typically too much QSB & QRM to ID definitively, but I suspect these were mostly CHP hits:

33.7400
39.1000
39.2600 118.8
39.3600
44.7400 186.2
47.5800 173.8
48.4200

Can anyone tell me if this Es event was on the weak side, or about average for this time of year? Trying to gauge how well my setup is performing.

Thanks!

What is a good scanner for Low band DX'ing ?

Any good scanner choices for low band DX'ing

Was thinking a 780 or 785? They seem to be well designed and made for the radio technology at the time.

Would prefer an older model with good sensitivity would be using a 65 ft LW on my roof same as my SW exam

The 780 would be a decent choice. I don't have a 785, but since it shares quite a bit of DNA with the 780 I would guess it's also decent. I'm using my BCD536HP for low band skip and like it a lot for that. It's nearly as sensitive as my 780, but it also records which is a huge benefit. The Sporadic E layer skip usually occurs during the day when I'm at work, so being able to review skip recordings in the evening is a beautiful thing. Also the 536 decodes CTCSS codes nearly instantly, and then saves the code along with each transmission recording. That is a huge benefit when trying to figure out who you're listening to. Skip transmissions often fade in and fade out very quickly, I doubt the 780 would be much help with decoding CTCSS in that scenario. It's just too slow at decoding. I should mention I live very near strong FM and TV towers, so I have to run several notch filters inline for the 536. Otherwise it suffers from desense. For the 780 I only have to run an FM notch filter.

Low band

I would guess due to the long distance communications with low band it's still widely used?

I remember when I worked at Prudhoe Bay Oil Field in the 80's in Alaska one day I was sitting in a HC Price company truck talking to their safety guy and we heard some low band skip on their radio freq from Texas. We called back to the guy he was coming in loud and clear in the most northern part of Alaska.! It took a bit of talking before he believed us LOL

Low Band is not that widely used in the U.S. anymore, except by the military. In the western U.S. it's mostly a Cailifornia Highway Patrol show, as not many other agencies use it out here. There's a couple states back east that use it for highway patrol, I think Tennessee? Maybe Missouri? There's still some fire departments back east on low band. Check out kkn50's logs, they're sort of a compendium of what's left in the U.S.

To hear Texas from Alaska would likely mean you had good F2 layer skip at the time (although it could have been another propagation type). F2 skip is the type associated with sun spot activity near the solar cycle maximum. We don't have those conditions right now, and aren't likely to again for a long time. What we do have right now is Sporadic E layer skip, which is a summer time annual phenomena. The E layer is lower than the F layer, so the propagation distances are shorter, typically 600 to 1400 miles. We may have good E skip for a few more weeks, but then it will fade away until mid winter when it sometimes returns briefly. It should return in earnest next May or June.
