Are there many VHF Lo band openings during the winter? I would assume its mainly a summer thing.

I haven't spent much time on the VHF Lo bands, but I do remember a quite exceptional opening on Christmas Eve several years ago. I was getting huge signals from MD and PA for about 30 minutes from here in NC using an old Uniden scanner with a small whip from in the middle of the house. That must have been some opening!

I spent a few hours scanning through the 30/40 MHz range in our area and seeing what I could hear. There were no band opening, but these are the frequencies I found around here. I'll post them here in case it may help someone ID something they are hearing during an opening:

37.040 127.3 PL Smyth County, VA sheriff
37.320 85.4 PL Grayson County, VA sheriff
39.300 632 DCS Pulaski County, VA sheriff
39.960 192.8 PL Stokes County, NC school buses
46.450 - Rockingham County, NC fire
46.970 ? Unknown data
47.100 107.2 PL NCDOT Division 11 operations
49.480 67.0 PL Stokes County, NC Pike Electric - Mt. Airy

If you are looking for military stuff search 30-88 MHz in 25 kHz steps and remember that they run up to 15 kHz deviation (36 kHz bandwidth) and usually use 150 Hz tone which scanners don't have. Scanners will show the tone as 151.4 because that is the closest one which is within frequency error tolerance.

Thanks for the tip. I had a couple of old VHF low band recordings that had this 150hz tone. I used Audacity to remove the tone and now they're nice and clean. (See Post #167 for the recordings...)

I was asked for a How-To to remove CTCSS tones from recordings... here's a quick tutorial:

Download Audacity Windows installer from Windows | Audacity ®
Download the installer and under optional downloads grab the LADSPA installer
Download LAME MP3 binaries here: https://lame.buanzo.org/libmp3lame-win-3.99.3.zip
Download FFMPEG binaries from here: https://lame.buanzo.org/ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe

Run LADSPA installer
Extract the LAME and FFMPEG binaries. Create a folder for each and place the files into them

Run the Audacity installer and launch Audacity when installing is complete

Under EDIT --> PREFERENCES and select Libraries
If Audacity hasn't detected the files then select Locate and point Audacity to the folders you created above
The versions of the binaries should be detected and you're all set.
(You can verify these also by going to HELP -> ABOUT AUDACITY -> Build Information)

Now you can open just about any audio file (regardless of extension) and work with it. Then when you're done tweaking the audio you can export it under FILE -> EXPORT -> EXPORT as MP3

To remove any CTCSS tone:

Open the audio file
Highlight the entire waveform (double-click inside the waveform boxes... the background will turn white)
From the menu, select EFFECT -> NOTCH FILTER
Simply input the CTCSS tone frequency you want to remove and say OK
Done!

Are those various Virginia Sheriff offices still actively using low band?

I feel like they would be using the VSTARS system.
