Well more the app working, without a wifi connection, and then use my iPod as the remote head? I wish they make a remote head, since not everyone has a smart phone!

Ah, yes, that's the way I understood it in the advertising. "Ad hoc" means you would create a direct wifi connection between your iPod and the scanner. "Infrastructure" means you would connect your scanner to an existing network, i.e. your home wireless, and then connect your iPod also to your home wireless. The theory is indeed that you could connect your iPod to your scanner without any other wireless devices being involved, if you so desired.

Something just occurred to me that has no real bearing on your question.. but my vehicle has a wireless access point. I could connect a scanner to the truck, and then a tablet to the truck, and have access to the scanner even a distance away from the vehicle. :D

Yes, Ad hoc is direct, or point to point only.

Could we stream to a set of WiFi speakers?

Probably not. The ad hoc or infrastructure modes require the Siren app. It's not just pushing out the audio but also other metadata associated with the scanning.

Via your mobile device or tablet, you could connect to the scanner via Wi-Fi and then to your Wi-Fi speakers through the device if that's supported. I definitely plan to use the Bluetooth connection in my SUV :)

In the announcement video it says you can access your scanner from anywhere in the world if you have internet. My question is how is that set up? Obviously you need the app but beyond that what would need to be done with the home network?

We are working on the actual process, now, but it should be similar to the way our video surveillance works. You'll register your scanner(s) to our registration server, then log into the server from the app. The registration server will then provide the scanner(s) peer-to-peer address.

For local network or ad-hoc, you will not need any kind of registration with our system, but for remote access remote registration is required. A benefit of this is that if you have an issue with your scanner, if it is registered and connected a tech can actually directly monitor your scanner and change or suggest settings to correct the issue.

Theoretically, we could do that now with Remote Desktop and a program running on the user's PC. But no plans for that (requires a lot of setup on the end-user's part). With the BCD536HP, however, it is a direct connect to the scanner...no need to have access to the user's PC to see the scanner.

Makes sense since the handheld doesn't come with it's own portable hotspot. Thanks for the clarification!

So I could use an ad hoc to connect the PC to the 536, then use my own streaming and remote access? (Looking to eliminate a third party from accessing my equipment, and the delays that get added by such.)

Yes (but that would only work within the WiFi communications distance)

I just looked at the launch video again. I believe I understood it to say the scanners will do location based scanning using favorites lists and the main database or a combination.

Let's say me and my scanner connected to a GPS are traveling from Kentucky to California but do not have any favorites programmed in for points in between. Will the scanner "pick-up" things along the way? Then is there a way to filter the service types that I want to listen to, such as Fire Dispatch but no public works or schools? (I guessing it might based on the profile, but wanted to confirm this).

Thanks!

You will have latency on a remote connection..but not much.. No one can remote in except uniden if you give them control thru citrix....im sure it will be password protected. The bad a$$ part is that tech support can remote in like remote desk top and see what is going on. Or another RR person. Kinda of cool.

If the 536 is on a network connected via wifi than updates, scan lists and the software uploads should work great. The usb will be a back up. I wonder if you will be able to set it up on a static iP?

As long as you've allowed the scanner to use the full database, then yes, it would pick up channels and systems along your hypothetical route from Kentucky to California, as well as your return trip along the northern tier of states though Wyoming & Minnesota. (I told you not to turn left at Oakland!)

The first attached screen shot is the Edit Profile screen. You access that by clicking the icon with the 'pencil' on a sort of tablet, or choose from the Edit drop-down menu, or use the shortcut <CTRL>+<1>.

See the tab for Service Types? that's the second one.Pick the ones you want, uncheck the ones you don't. Those types match up with the Tag field on the database page.

I haven't read all the documentation on the new scanners yet, but on the HP-1, when using a GPS, the range is reset to zero. I usually change that. At zero, the scanner would load any system whose range overlaps your position. If you set the range to a larger number, say 20, then any system whose range + the 20 mile range in the scanner was greater than the distance from your location would load. Example: The system has a 20 mile range (in the database), and you are 30 miles from it. At scanner setting zero, it would not load. At scanner setting of a 20 mile range, it would load, because the 20 mile range of the scanner overlaps the 20 mile range of the system. Most of the systems that I listen to out in the rural areas are Vhf-high, which carry a farther distance, so a longer range setting works for me. If you we're dealing primarily with 700/800 MHz trunked system sites, the longer range might not be the best choice.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding was WiFi connection was for controlling scanner like a remote head or streaming audio back through the mobile device app. Updates, favorites lists, and software uploads all have to be done through a Windows computer running Sentinel software.
