I've updated the rest of the DB to reflect the PDF provided by Wayne.

Someone might be so kind as to double check the admins work and make sure there are no typos. I caught a few I did and corrected those.

We can probably close this out now that we have confirmed info and DB is current.

One other thing to note: all existing VHF extenders are being removed Statewide in favor of the 700MHz extenders. Replacements should complete middle to late July.

I'll see what I can find for any other channels.

Had a conversation with a CHP officer today. He was skeptical about it happening that fast, but he said definitely by the end of the year. The current VHF extenders are not compliant with the January 1, 2013 narrowbanding mandate.

July-ish is only for NorCal minus the Bay Area. I forgot to specify that. I don't have the dates for the rest at the moment.

The removal and installation procedure is meant to be quick so an AO can be done in a day no problem.

ummm asking a chp officer about radio issues is kinda like asking a chp officer to interpret the vehicle code the responses are wide and varied

the old legacy ge master execs do not play well with the current rockwell mess that is pretending to be a radio system in the trunk of their car

the new 700 pyramids are needed to make an easier interface into the computers in the truck

that is more pressing than a narrowband issue

usually the officers are just told everything is done to comply with narrow banding just so they nod their head and go away (i didnt make that policy.. just reporting it )

Fish & game are getting new radios.. the tk-790 is perefectly narrow band compliant
the new tk-5710H is 100 watts vs 50 and has p25 so that if they need to talk to any mutual aid agencies that are p25.. they can communicate and p25 is required on all new PS radios
(sells more radios)

its a lot easier to just say "narrowbanding" than explaining the entire reason 100 times a day

the next radio sales advertising marketed as narrow banding will probably happen in 18 or 19 and trying to move to a 6.25 bw
this will , of course, necessitate buying digital radios since thats the only way to achieve 6.25

That's a CHP 700 MHz base frequency, not an extender frequency. It might be appropriate to start a new forum for this; we will probably see a lot more activity on those frequencies in the coming months.

You're right - I'll post elsewhere

Are you sure on that NAC? Should be 7D1. I don't see any new 700mhz freqs with a 296 NAC.

I've got a BCT15X with the whole CHP system programmed in, including the digital extenders, which I have set with an alert tone. Even though it only comes through as static(since it's digital), it's still a useful alert when I hear the static come through because I know they are nearby.

I regularly drive through Border Div, mainly Tan. From what I've seen over the past month or so, is that the CHP trucks continuously broadcast on the VRS freqs. Whenever I drive near them, you get tons of short bursts of traffic, which I don't think are actual conversations, but rather the radio literally talking to itself or some internal radio activity. At first I thought it was maybe the dispatcher talking and I was just getting short bursts of static that way, but even on very quiet days where I hear almost no traffic at all, when I see a truck, the radio starts chattering quite a bit. The main freqs I see constantly are 769.18125, 769.44375 and 769.94375. I know 18125 is the Tan extender. The 44375 is the Turquoise extender, which is the next div over. Not sure about 94375. So the freqs line up with ones that I would expect to see.

On the crown vic side of things, they have been very silent over the past few months and I haven't heard any 154mhz traffic until about a week ago. I'm not sure if they have switched over to digital yet, but they have been silent compared to the trucks.

Tan is having radio issues regularly now and they keep having to go back to Blue div wide freq.

Now to my questions.
1. Have you heard of any issues rolling out these new digital extenders? I have heard of voice quality issues from a friend up in the Bay Area saying that they sound like robots when you hear them through the base freq as a rebroadcast.
2. What would cause the trucks to continuously emit the digital extender freq and will the cars show the same behavior or are they still on analog setups? Is there some difference in the radio they use, or the way they operate the radios?
3. Any word on why Tan is having radio issues?

1. The new extenders work well, although I've heard the same complaints about the audio quality. I think part of it is getting used to the digital voice, and part of it is that converting between analog and digital just doesn't produce great audio. It would be better if the entire system were digital, but that simply isn't possible with the low band system they currently have.

2. I believe the 700 MHz extenders have a built-in priority structure in which they are constantly signalling each other to determine which one will be active when there are multiple patrol cars at a scene. You are probably hearing the raw data being exchanged during this process. The Crown Vics should exhibit the same behavior when they are equipped with the new extenders. Not all of them are equipped yet, but the plan is to upgrade all vehicles by the end of the year, as the VHF extenders are not narrowband compliant.

3. I don't know, sorry.

They have been upgrading equipment on Tan. It has been sounding better for a few days now.

I can say the voice quality is an issue. I drove through SAC yesterday and even dispatch was having problem figuring out what someone said, having to re-transmit the message 2 to 3 times before she got it. Sometimes the voices get really squirrley, like when listing to the audio of DirectTV during a rain storm. Audio is definitely better from the analog car radios.
