I see it traveling when I get near a WEATHER STATION SITE of a 200 watt VHF PAGING SITE.
I am a mile from a 50 watt VHF Repeater and 1 meg away it does not bother mine on an outside antenna.
Sitting in a Rail Yard they are pretty good and following the 4 channels used in the yard without issue.

FWIW....as indicated in an earlier post, the BCD160DN is available on Amazon, but not Amazon Prime. So it's a third party shipper that can take it's sweet time getting the radio to you. Best bet is to order directly from Uniden, which has free FedEx shipping for orders over $99.

These scanners are very good at what they do.
1. Yes they have a hotter receiver in them.
2. Takes less Antenna to hear the same distance.
3. Some are disappointed due to the fact they do not read what features they have or expect a scanner to compete with a several thousand dollars commercial radio.
4. Or just plain old do not know how to operate the scanner they buy.
This is just not about the BCDx60DN's its any brand or model.
Very well phrased, buddrousa!
You are incredibly knowledgeable.
Have a nice Saturday night and remainder of your weekend.

these models are that sensitive that a external antenna is not needed unless they are very far away from anything that could cause interference? If this is the case, sounds like the perfect mobile scanner. Am considering more getting the handheld version. Uniden wont abandon it and will provide firmware updates in time.

It's the opposite, that you'll need a really good scanner that doesn't overload when mobile in a car. You are exposed to a lot of RF signals when driving and I use that to test different scanners how well they work while mobile, as using it at home usually doesn't expose it to the same amount of RF.

Live out in the country and was planning to hook it up to my discone. Have 3 hooked up to it now. I take my 325P2 with me when out driving. Want the handheld version to go in the empty slot I have open on my 3 radio holder. From reading other responses, sounds like it overloads bad when hooked up to a external antenna. Thanks Ubbe for your reply.

Just to be clear I run my BCD160DN in my car connected to a Stridsberg connected to a Larson VHF UHF 800 Triband Antenna at all times.
Have you compared this setup to just using the antenna that comes with it? Have noticed on my 325P2 that when hooked up to my discone, the simulcast affects it. But if I leave just the supplied antenna on, seems to reduce this issue. Just my observation. Trying to find out if I buy the handheld version, will I have overload issues using it on my discone living out in the country. Closest town is about 2 miles away. Appreciate your input. Thanks.

If you are not near FM Radio Towers, High Power Paging Towers, or National Weather Station Towers I would not think you would see a problem with the BCD160DN on your outside antenna.
Hope this helps

Am using a Stridsberg MCA204MIL multicoupler (4 port) with a ZBSF-95-N+. Do have a weather station in the town about 2 miles from me. FM stations are about 10 miles away. May give it a shot but was hoping Icom R15 would have been released by now so I can read the reviews before deciding. Thanks buddrousa.

While standing on the attic, with a little above average length portable antenna (Diamond RH-771) I can hear VHF FLEX paging blasting through several air band frequencies, plus mixing through the audio on active VHF marine frequencies. I'm now using an UHF only antenna to reduce the issues..

The closest paging tower is about 2 miles away.

By chance do you have anything to compare it to? Which did you get the 160 or 260? Thanks

I have the 160, comparing it to my son’s 125, I can’t tell any real difference in sensitivity. I’ve had quite a few Uniden handheld scanners, SR30C,125, 325, 436, SDS 100. Even still use some older ones like the BC80XLT which has great analog sensitivity. I sold off my digital radios a couple of years ago when the local public service encrypted.

I don’t use outside or mobile antennas for handhelds, just the Smiley ducks. I monitor an analog system about 25 miles away, the tower is at 250 feet, it’s readable but weak. My area is not challenging RF wise.

I like some of the features especially the Railroad service band search which has all 97 AAR, the splits, and the Data. That’s my primary use. Is it worth twice the price of a 125? Only if non trunking DMR and NXDN will be useful to you now or in the future. This radio was designed with the Railfan in mind.

Anyone order one from uniden? I ordered Monday morning hoping it would ship by today. My 1st time ordering from them. Said it was in stock. I usually order from HRO or another dealer for scanners. Might call them tomorrow to see what’s up.
