I recently acquired a used mint condition Kenwood TM-281a but I am not a big fan of the DTMF stock mic compared to Kenwood's commercial KMC-35 mic. Does anyone know if the heftier KMC-35 is compatible with the 281a?

It should work OK. I know of hams running Kenwood commercial mics on V71 radios.

I run a Kenwood KMC-27 on my Connect Systems CS800 radio.

Not knowing what connector the 281 uses, but yes, I did use a KMC-35 on my G707 for a while.
I also just found out that those K/W mics work on the crappy little QYT quad-band I have...

Used the KMC-35 and the KMC-28 DTMF mike. The KMC-28 worked great and even the "up/down" buttons work, but it does not have the ABCD so no VFO/MR/etc. Otherwise the KMC-28 is a far superior mike than the trash can one that ships with the radio.
