Tweaking the GRE PSR-500

are you using GRE PSR-500? If so sometimes you have to use the software to tweak some advance settings as sometimes that model has reception issues.

I have the GRE PSR-500 and I'm getting ready to reprogram it to rearrange some freq's and delete others and saw your post. What are some of the advance settings that may need to be tweaked? Also is most everything on I-70 east of saline rebanded and up dated on RR? I'm going to the KU basketball game Saturday and hopr to use the scanner to help get around in traffic. I'm also going to try and plug in Wichita PD & SO, Fire and EMS as I have been traveling to Wichita a lot lately. any helpful hints would be great.

I have a 500 and have tweaked nothing. It works fine for me as is. I monitor everything from KC over to Topeka and down to Emporia. You will need to update it for rebanding if you haven't done so and I would suggest placing it in STAT not ROAM if you want to catch overlapping sites but other than that it works fine.

Not sure if you answered this before but, What software are you using to program with? I use Win500 and would send ya my fire I use for Wichita and KSICS to see what settings I use.

Thank You

Just got back from 3 days in Wichita. After living in small town western Kansas sense 1993 I had forgotten how busy a scanner in Wichita is. I don't think there was more than a 10 seconds of silence the the entire time I was there. Thanks for all the help. I had WPD & Fire, Sedgwick SO & Fire as well as EMS plus the EMS to each of the hospitals in town. I also had KHP for the Wichita area but they were not on a KSICS freq I don't think. My display would read "Wichita Police" then flash to "VC Kansas Highway Patrol". I didn't look at the actual freq.

One freq I did put in was the radio station KFDI. It's 450.0500 this is thier news department. I heard lots of stuff on that channel & as a plus it was always short and to the point. No useless talking which is always nice. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

KHP Metro uses the Wichita Sedgwick County analog TRS. They have KSICS and do use it from time to time, but they mostly stay on the SG County system.

You will be happy with whatever they chose with that scanner.... Unless they were to encrypt all transmissions... You will pick up every system in the state of kansas with that radio except those Channels that are encrypted... Only time will tell with the New Wichita System.... But for that area at the current time with our Current info.... The 500/600 by GRE will be a great radio.... OK I am Biased a Bit, I have 5 of them in front of me right now.

Last night I was woke up at 1:09 am by the tone for our local EMS to transfer a pt. to Hays Medical Ctr. At the same time I picked up in the middle of a chase in Wichita County. The chase started in Leoti and went north on K- 25. No KHP were involved. I must say the KSICS worked perfectly. The dispatcher from Wichita County controled the chase and LEO's from Wallace & Logan County as well as an Officer from Oakley all joined in to help. The chase was run on SW Ks 12. Which is silent 99% of the time. All transmissions were in the clear with everyone working as one unit.

By the way they did catch the guy. He was at the very least DUI from Garden City and he wrecked his car on some dirt road. Wonder how it would have worked if one of the LEO's would have been encryptied?

RE: one leo being in encrypted, all of the mutual aid statewide talk groups are forced in the clear by the system programming. It would not matter if any of them were set to be encrypted the system controller would not allow the encryption and the officer would be in the clear.

so is the reason this does not work between Finney County (encrypted) & KHP (clear) is because the are not on a mutual aid channel and have to go through dispatchers and land lines to communitcate to one another?

Shouldn't be, what channel are they trying to talk on?

KHP trying to talk on Finny County Channels.

That is a possibility, they would have to have Finney county channels in their radio which is unlikely, they would also need Finney County's encryption key which is even more unlikely. I am not sure KHP has the ability to go encrypted at all

I am not sure KHP has the ability to go encrypted at all.

KHP is rolling very limited ADP encryption out to the field in the final rebanding wave. It appears that it will be talkgroup specific, not a user option, and will likely be limited to the "ops" talkgroup in each troop area.

Question, I have a RS 197 base/mobile and a GRE PSR-500 hand held scanner that are programed with the same freq's in the same banks. the 197 is up stairs on the 2nd level of the house. The 500 is on the ground level. Both are using the factor antenna's that came with the radio. I have noticed that the 197 is missing a lot of home or close call, but is still picking up calls 50 or 60 miles away. while the 500 is still picking up short & far calls. Any idea what's going on?

I have been hearing traffic on TG 583. It is not listed in the database or the PDF file on the wiki. It sounds like law enforcement, but I have been unable to determine anything more than that. Does anyone know what this is?

It occured too quick, but based on the towers I usually recieve, it was probably Hutchinson, Partridge, or Lyons.

I heard it again, and I it was someone calling LaCrosse for a license check. I assume it is either Lacrosse PD or Rush Co Sheriff. They probably have someone at the LETC here bringing the radio traffic with them.
