tower sites ?

got my psr 500 a while back getting a long with it and the software just fine. got a question about the display and tower sites on KSICS. i downloaded talk groups and freqs they all come up and tell me which TG it is KHP TROOP C, Lincoln co. etc. how do i tell which tower its coming off of i see the freq and know if its bennington or cloud by looking at the freq , but you might be hearing anybody from traffic being carried over. i see in the list of towers all the sites have ID numbers , but i don't see them come up am i supposed to? also what are the PSAP's like the one listed in yoder ks. heard allen county doing on Talkgroup 2000 doing radio checks off the bennington tower .

I can answer the last part of your questions. PSAP=Public Safety Answering Point aka Dispatch Center. The PSAP channels are for Dispatch centers to contact each other, or for their units with 800 radios to contact them when out of range of their local radio system. For example I hear Rice County EMS calling their Dispatch any time they make a run to Wichita when they arrive and clear from the hospitals. Yoder is the south central region backup center. It is the Hutch Community College dispatch training lab, serves as the backup for Reno County Dispatch and also serves as a backup for the 19 counties of SC region. If they go down or have to evacuate (or like Greensburg, get destroyed) their calls can be transferred there and dispatchers from the area respond to answer the phones and relay info back to the affected county via the Yoder talkgroup. PSAP channels work statewide. The reason you are hearing Allen County on SE1 PSAP from Salina is that someone up there has a radio set on SE1 PSAP so it is picking it up (likely during the weekly roll calls they do on the PSAP and EOC channels).

KHP and KBI simplex channels.

I have a question: Do the KHP digital radios still support the two simplex channels that they originally had when they were using the stand-alone towers? One was 855.9625 and the other was a higher freq. that has since been "rebanded". KDOT used the same two freqs. with different DCS tones. The KBI also licensed 868.900 as a simplex channel. Since rebanding I notice that both the rebanded 868.8375 (?) channel and the KBI simplex channel are carrying KHP trunked channels. 853.900 is one of the freqs. used by the Olathe tower, and it carries a lot of routine KHP traffic. All these simplex channels got relicensed by the FCC under their rebanded counterparts. I was just wondering if all the simplex channels had actually been given up and "refarmed" into the trunk?? Anyone know the answer to this?

I've partially answered my own question. Two days ago I heard a KBI unit in SE KS talking with a colleague. He mentioned that they could go to "talk around" when they got within range. So the simplex freqs. are still available apparently. I couldn't hear them, so I still don't know whether the "talk around" channels are digital with an NAC tone or analog with the old DCS tones. If anybody hears simplex action on these channels, please let us know.

I have heard Chanute KHP(Troop G?), but it is rare, and I haven't heard them lately. The last time I was in that area, I heard quite a bit of traffic, but it has been a while as well.

Yes. Troop "H" Chanute dispatch is fairly active in SE Kansas. I monitor the West Mineral Tower in Cherokee County.

Does anyone know if Crawford County public safety (police/fire/ems) will be using this system in the future?

They should already be on the system now. The city of Pittsburg and Crawford County both have extensive lists of talkgroups for their use, and I've heard Crawford County units talking before.

Hearing Ellis County (Hays Ks.) up on the KSICS

Last night was the first night that I have heard Hays PD & Ellis county SO as well as Fire & EMS on the KSICS.

Hays Pd & Ellis County SO are both dispatching on TG 1600
Ellis county Fire & EMS were using TG 2272
Hays PD Private TG 1984

On my PRE GSR 500 Display screen it was showing a VC before the freq. I think that means they are broadcasting over both old and new freq's at the same time. ( I think I remember reading that on the forum some place) The transmissions were unencryped and came in loud and clear even tho I am almost 90 miles from Hays.
I'm sure there will be more TG to come and I'll try and get the freq's to post here also.

The state has licensed a new KSICS site just north of Hays; freqs 851.225, 851.975, 852.3625, 852.55, 852.875, 853.225, 853.55, 853.825.

Jackson Co. radio traffic to return to air | CJOnline.com I read that artical too. It was nice to see that at least one sheriff seems to be on scanner buffs side. Wish other agencies saw scanners as just another tool that can be used to help law enforcement.

“When criminals are apprehended, it is common to find them in the possession of scanners. So you might want to wait on buying a new and more expensive scanner...."

From the last quote from Sheriff Morse, I get the impression he is planning to encrypt traffic.... Does anyone else read that into it?

It's odd, in 15 years as a patrol officer, I can only remember 2 or 3 instances where a scanner was found in relation to an arrest or crime in progress. So, are the "perps" are getting smarter? Or is Motorola offering larger commission to their sales people who manage to scare (I'm sorry, I mean "convince") the buyers into adding the encryption option to the sale?

IMHO- Motorola is using cheap ADP encryption as a marketing tool. They offer it at $5+ or - per radio, but do not mention that it a proprietary encryption system available only on Motorola radios. So, once you have invested in it, you- and anyone who wants to talk encrypted with you- are stuck with Motorola products. It kind of defeats the idea of the open architecture that P-25 is supposed to be.

That is the point I was trying to get across to a couple of people in a meeting the other day. If we want to shoot ourselves in the foot for P25 and interop, go back to 39.58.

Crawford County Kansas Update

Does anyone know if Crawford County public safety (police/fire/ems) will be using this system in the future?

Word is that Crawford County, Kansas and agencies located in that county will not be using the KSICS System anytime soon. The agencies in Crawford County are in the process of Narrowbanding before the Jan 1, 2013 deadline. The only agencies I'm hearing on the West Mineral KSICS tower are KHP Chanute and Labette County Sheriff's Department. I'm located in Pittsburg, Kansas and work at the Pittsburg State University Police Department. Below are links to several local newspaper articles talking about new radio equipment purchases for the switch to Narrowband. If I can help with anything else in my local area let me know.

Big story in the Parsons Sun. We are going digital, too. Lot$ of money earmarked to go to Motorola.

Now, that means I am gonna have to A) Break down and buy a compatible scanner, or B) just listen to it on the internet here on RR.....

PPD has been having issues with their radio system a lot lately. They have Washington Electronics over here now and then tinkering with it. When they have trouble, they go off to their auxiliary channel and do their business.

We are spending money like drunken sailors!

Jefferson County Tg 4552

Heard a Jefferson County deputy talking to a Jackson County deptuy on tg 4552. The Jefferson County deputy was talking about how nice the radio was and that they just started installing them in some cars. They talked back and fourth through out the night and said they would be back on tonight.Could this be Jefferson County Tg?
