I'm probably just misunderstanding this, but is MARCS using TDMA now?

No TDMA at the present time. Since version 7.11 Motorola populates TDMA in the band plan tables even if this feature was not purchased. A system admin could delete the extra TDMA entries manually but there's no real advantage to doing so.

The only reliable way a scanner listener will know if TDMA was purchased and provisioned is to observe phase 2 channel grants.

No. As in the past, the system is Phase II capable, but not Phase II ready. It would require a considerable amount of firmware and feature upgrades, not to mention the cost to most customers to upgrade their radios to add the capability (or replace the radios; there are still a large number of radios on the system which are not Phase II capable at all).

The cost to upgrade the system alone would probably be in the tens of millions (at least).

Columbus PD still has Astro Spectra radios in their cruisers. There's probably a number of other users using those still. Until P25 Auth becomes 100% next year but even then I'm guessing Columbus can still not force P25 Auth since they're a type 4 integration. Just a guess. I do know they're pushing for it.

They are using XTL5000s with W7 heads.

Wa8pyr, could you explain the upcoming P25 authorization?
Radio requires authorization key that matches what is requested on the system.

Its radio specific so each radio has its own LLA key.

It’s also not stored in the MACE which allows the radio to stay authorized even if it gets reprogrammed or sent to repair.

Speaking of LLA, doesn't the APX 8000 support that feature? Just about everyone around here is only using Kenwood for MARCS now because they were told the Motorolas wouldn't be compatible after the "update".

Yes the 8000 supports LLA, the whole APX series does as does the XTS/XTL.

A Motorola feature, not compatible with Motorola radios, being used on a Motorola system? Anyone who believes that is daft.

We had a speaker from Pickaway County at the station and he said his department has the same "problem" with their Harris radios and he said he thinks it's something to do with the programming software, but I don't think that makes any sense either. I'm starting to think Kenwood's just telling everybody this to get people to buy their stuff.

Newer Harris radios work (XG, XL) work just fine with Link Layer. Older ones like P7100, M7100 do not.

Well, according to MARCS, XTS/XTL radios will not be supported. They are listed as not able to be updated for P25 authentication. So they are all being replaced.

New XTS/XTL radios will not be allowed on system. Existing users are still supported as long as they have been flashed for LLA.

These are APX. I guess the programmer didn't flash them for LLA, but then I don't see why they couldn't be sent back to that company to be updated. It's all just speculation at this point, but seems like an unnecessary issue to me.

@wd8chl Glad you thought that was funny

MARCS is actually a good part of if not completely the reason why LLA was added as a feature to the Astro25 series (XTS/XTL) so late in life. They can be updated to work just fine and APX of course can be without issue. I've heard this firsthand from MARCS partner system techs.

New site license application for Brookfield, OH (Trumbull). Given 10 freqs for one site, I'm wondering if Trumbull may be switching to a simulcast and this is just the first licensed site of the simulcast. Just speculation.

This is the old Brookfield Air Force Station site, later the Trumbull County Home. The county has a tower there already at one of the old base buildings, which happens to be an old AT&T Long Lines building as the base was connected to feed it's radar data to Oakdale AFS in the Pittsburgh area for command and control related to the Nike missile sites. A new tower and shelter was being built for MARCS not too far away.

I was relieved by that decision, there are still thousands of the XTS/XTL series radios on the system. MARCS would have faced subscriber anger of earthquake proportions had they insisted that the Astro25 series be retired; I'm willing to bet quite a few customers would have given them the one-finger salute and gone back to their old systems.

I'm retired now and don't have to care anymore, though....
