and do a text search for "Des Plaines" which will yield 14 results. Program your scanner to any of the listings that are compatible with the Uniden Bearcat BC75XLT. That will get you started listening to some local activity. Here is the wiki page for your scanner:

You might also let us know what your scanning interests are. Be specific by jurisdiction name and agency. Keep in mind that you have an entry-level model scanner that will not cover some of the more sophisticated systems listed on that page.

Raymond, Hi. I looked up a description of your scanner. I just do not believe you will get any fire or police action on that scanner, especially around the Chicago area. I lived in Palatine for many years, and the Chicago police just never shut up. It went from one issue to the next, always very busy. However, that was a trunked system. I do not believe your scanner will do that.
The local police all around your area, including the Sheriffs, are encrypted.
There are many more people here who can help you with this more than I can. But I believe you will need another scanner, and perhaps just a phase 1 would work for you. Let's wait for the pros to chime in here. Good Luck. Greg

Raymond - you won't be able to listen to your home town's police (Des Plaines) because they are on the state communication system called StarCom21. Plus they are encrypted so no scanner will be able to listen to them. However you can listen to your town's fire department. They are on 155.4375. This frequency is used for several other departments. Listen for stations 61 -63.

You should have a lot of fun with Search. You'd be surprised what you can discover. I like picking up things that people don't think they're being listened to. The local hospital security here doesn't realized they're on a state tower. I listen to ambulances, helicopters, TV and radio remote news teams (don't know if they still do), hunters and their dogs, military (even bombing practice), airplanes. There are LOTS of businesses on MURS and FRS channels.

The problem is that I cannot tell you over the web site here how to do that. Do you know anyone is Des Plaines that might help you. Do you know if there are any scanning clubs there? I found some info for you below. You need to put each frequency into the scanner. If you don;'t know how, I was hoping you may have someone who can show you. I could not find any local scanning clubs. You can google CARMA, which is a club out of Chicago. Perhaps you can call. FWIW. Greg

Hey Raymond - maybe you can tell us what you'd like to listen to. There isn't going to be much available via public safety because many of the local towns have moved to consolidated communications systems that your scanner is not able to receive. Follow the link for Cook County that I provided. You will find the frequencies for Chicago PD and a ton of other things to listen to. You won't be able to listen to CFD because they are on a digital radio system and you can only listen to traditional analog comms.
Here is a link to all sorts of businesses in the north end of Cook county. You can listen to Golf Mill but you won't be able to listen to Woodfield because of that digital thing i just mentioned.
