RIP Paul. I never met him personally, but I feel like I did. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

RadioReference community,

I'm very sad to report that Paul Optiz, Uniden Scanner Product Manager and good friend of mine, passed away on December 28, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul led some of the most innovative advancements in the scanning community, and was an active member and participant here on RadioReference.com (UPMAN)

I spent many years working with Paul on ideas to further the scanning community and his products that he managed, and I will greatly miss him. Not long ago he and I had lunch together in Irving TX where he was cheery and upbeat after finishing his recent rounds of therapy.

Paul's obituary is here:

He maintained a personal blog which outlined his battle with cancer. It really showed his determination to beat his illness, and his sense of humor about the entire process.

You can review the amazing level of contributions from his post history here:

He was a class act and an amazingly brilliant gentleman. Rest in Peace Paul, the radio and hobby community will miss you tremendously.

RIP Paul. You were a great man. I'll never forget how quickly you and your team worked with me when the 436 first came out and it didn't work on my local phase 2 system. I was upset and you took the data I provided and made firmware changes swiftly. A true professional. You will be missed greatly. Cancer sucks.

Just to let folks know that there is a thread started last night by Voyager in the Uniden Tavern where many members have expressed their condolences.

For those who may not have followed Paul's blog it was a fantastic account of his struggle as his difficulties progressed. Very candid and revealing.

Those of us who read the blog regularly were inspired by his courage in the face of this life challenge. Great humor also when you wouldn't expect it.

A very sad day.

Paul was one of us, and he loved to show it, and help us, it was not just a marketing ploy, it is what he loved, and he had the best job in the world cause he and other help evolve the hobby like no one else did.
He will be missed, and no one else can fill his spot like he did!

I hope that people here remember that they are humans, and don't start with the "What will happen to Uniden now that ..." crap.

A family lost a loved one, people are grieving, a voice has been silenced.

If complaining about your hobby is more important than someone going to bed tonight who can't say "good night, dad" or "nite, dear", you need your headlights realigned.

His blog always was a sobering read, as you could read along with the thoughts of someone who was staring fate in the eyes.

My condolences to his family, and all who knew him personally.

I do not think I met Paul, at Dayton, and hoped to remedy that, as he seemed like someone that I would like to hang out with.

As many others have said, the radio community has lost a champion, who battled to the end, with great composure, and wit. At least his suffering has ended.

RIP, Paul.
