I just re-encountered a thread about changing the P25 settings in my 436/536. I have set the Rensselaer County system digital threshold to Manual and 7. Now I can hear traffic sometimes and it sounds like crap. Before making the changes, I couldn't hear it at all, so I guess this is an improvement.

I believe this might have been mentioned in one of the radio-specific discussions for Uniden scanners.

When replaying traffic from this system, the 436 shows the RID one transmission late quite often. One much pay close attention to avoid confusion about radio identifications.

Heads up, law enforcement is now testing on the P25 800 system. 200 series talkgroups. Heard North Greenbush this morning.
Yeah when the system 1st came on probation was testing on 214. Ngpd and EgPd were test on 210 earlier in the week.

I haven't seen any IDs above 7999 yet. 7900s seem to be assigned to out-of-county units.

I just started building master TGID and UID listings for this system, but my reception is still so unreliable that I have hardly anything. I see a lot of IDs during transmissions, but the audio is usually unintelligible.

It's not been easy. My Albany County master lists, on the other hand, have 200 talkgroups and about 1800 radios.

I'm curious. Since your post in December, have you experimented with any other P25 threshold settings for the Rensselaer system? I just picked up a new 536HP, and initially heard nothing on this system until I made the changes you mention. Historically, I always had good luck receiving Rensselaer County systems, both analog and digital, at my QTH in Glenmont. Thanks.

Glenmont is a radio hole. Period. When I lived south of here in the area of Ravena/New Baltimore I could pick up much better across the entire spectrum. I could pick up Mass State Police 800 system but not in Glenmont, same distance. Even Albany Counties new system is a hit and miss. It depends on conditions for Renns County if I receive that system at all.

I am on the downside of the Hudson River's "east ridge" in Rensselaer. All of the county's sites appear to be behind terrain, hence my crappy reception at home. I get somewhat better reception with a handheld in downtown Albany than with any scanner or SDR connected to a discone in the attic in Rensselaer.

I have tried many threshold settings. The only ones that work at all are 7 and 8.

Well then I may as well stick with 7, as I can now hear activity. With the 8, I heard nothing. I've also had challenges with the Albany system. I found, at least in my case, the best solution was mounting an antenna to a window (north-facing) in my shack. Oddly enough, the antenna I experience the best performance with is a duckie designed for 460 MHz.

800 reception issues

All of the talk about reception problems can be solved very easily . . . buy a Unication G4 or G5. Problem solved. I hear all kinds of talk about the systems not working correctly, be it Saratoga County, Albany County or now Rensselaer County. I recall when Saratoga County went live someone living in Waterford asserted the south towers were not active because his scanner was not receiving anything. This even though the FD and EMS were using their radios (portables) in the village just fine. I have a couple of Unications and can say first hand the systems are working as designed. Actually my Unication works better than my Motorola 800 portable. This is because the portable has to affiliate when turned on, which means it must be within transmit range. The Unication just needs to be able to hear the control channel and your in. For whatever reason the scanner makers just have not figured it out yet. Is the Unication a bit pricey ? But of course, but it is built to commercial specifications. No matter what great deal you get on your latest Home Patrol, it is worthless if you can't reliably hear the system. I must say I enjoy the creative ways guys are using to try to get their scanner to work . . " I only extend the antenna half way, and put it on my book shelf by the window facing south, and sometimes I hear stuff"
