Just heard over the scanner that SacPD is undergoing some sort of radio maintenance right now and moving over to CTAC channels.

Just tuned over to Fire, and notice that the Robo Dispatcher is ending the call with "Operations CTAC2." Is this a new thing or because of the radio maintenance, too?

C-Tac Channels seem to be used when the P25 Digital system has a Fail or other Issue! If you have room in your scanner it is not a bad Idea to program them in.

There is no outage! The system is undergoing an upgrade to a newer Motorola release. Agencies are simply going to their backup channels as a precaution in the event something doesn't goes as planned. This is a planned event that will happen every 2 years.

I monitor all the channels, CTAC, trunked, etc.; and yesterday heard a dispatcher indicate there was a "system outage" and calls were being directed to a CTAC. I found it funny because the call came over Fire A1. Obviously not an outage if you're using the very same system to notify everyone.

Dispatch consoles will often connect via a Console Sub-System Interface (CSSI) that shows a different number than the Radio Frequency Sub-System (RFSS).

Talk groups in the 3059-3067 range have been active this weekend. I have them as the former CHAID1-5 (Citrus Heights Mutual Aid), but never had any known usage of them, nor do I think they actually belong to Citrus Heights anymore.

These sound related to the upcoming election, specifically I.T. related functions, possibly with voting machines, or counting machines, or vote centers, based on some keywords heard. 3065 seems to be the most active, with 3061 also having some traffic.

Being these talkgroups were unused and sit right above the "County Services" section of talkgroups when sorted in numerical order, I imagine these now "belong" to County Services, and specifly the Voter Registration & Elections department. Radio IDs are in the 9053xxxx (County Services) and 9190xxxx (Spares/Handouts) range.

Does anyone know what talk groups these are? Running unitrunker for the last year and had a ton of talk groups that are unidentified.

The higher number ones are likely decode errors. Some might be programming errors on subscriber radios. The even numbered talkgroups are likely programming or decode errors because SRRCS uses odd-numbered talkgroups.

There's some in the UC Davis and Davis (City) range that are known/active.

I see some that were known on the analog system but are no longer in use on the digital system. They might still be programmed in some outside agency radios in error.

There some encrypted stuff in there.

The 2659-2749 I've seen joins as well, but no voice traffic that I've observed. It's a pretty big range so maybe staging for a new agency to join at some point? PURE SPECULATION: Woodland licensed some 800 MHz frequencies for a trunked system, maybe they want to join SRRCS? Less likely, but does Roseville want to obsorb into SRRCS or at least have roaming capability onto SRRCS?

I know Roseville is investing in a new VHF radio system for the Fire Department as the project is in the current years I.T fiscal budget.

A couple of years ago the brass in charge of the FD at time refused to join the city of Roseville's new P25 800 mhz based system for both safety and interop concerns. From what I remember there was quite an internal rift over it as the system was implemented without going through a proper bid, planning, and testing process.

It's entirely possible PD is now looking at options themselves. I mean it does seems like every so often the P25 system will still suffer from a garbled transmission or two that ends up frustrating officers as they have to repeat themselves.

I'd like to see Roseville PD dump their 800 system and either join the Sacramento county system (like West Sac & Davis have) or join the Placer County system. It would almost make too much sense for the fire department to go VHF so they can interop best with CalFire and other agencies, and utilize the Placer VHF system if needed.

I don't think Woodland is joining Sacramento. Two of Davis's licenses show County of Sacramento as the contact with Davis as the licensee. Woodland's contact shows a name out of Novato with Woodland as the licensee.

I think Woodland is spinning up their own radio system. I don't know if it will be Phase I or Phase II, though.

This YECA governing board packet includes a survey starting on page 20 where they discuss several options including optimizing their existing channels, converting the YSO channel to P25, adding a SRRCS site, or creating a YECA P25 trunked system.

The board packet is from 2021. I do remember reading that as their now retired chief of police wanted something else than their current VHF system.

They floated several ideas, including joining SRRCS. I think they ended up abandoning that idea, though, because of infrastructure costs. So... not sure what direction they're going in now.
