How well does the unication hear DMR? How many bands? P25 phase II? Field programmable? Price?
You have zero idea about Unication's product line and/or you are happy to be a Uniden shill.
A simple visit to
Unication's site reveals that they do make an advanced G4 & G5 that is capable of DMR Tier III, P25, and TETRA trunking. Now I haven't seen the advanced model available in the US but given the response that Unication USA has had for their basic model, I bet they bring the advanced model to the market in the near future.
As far as bands go (I'm assuming you mean frequency ranges), for MOST public service trunking monitoring, you only need 700/800 MHz. Getting a G5 over a G4 allows you to get the systems that aren't covered. Need a model that covers 380 MHz for military systems or one that covers 470-520 MHz? They have it and the fact that it's first job is as a public safety pager and not a scanner, that's pretty damn impressive. You can also add in the fact that the Unication has the ability to enter a system key and decode encrypted traffic.
Unication has a proven device that delivers nearly everything it promises. It's not perfect but it works to the point where many agencies are buying them as an affordable alternative to buying even more radios.
Uniden talks a big game and rarely backs it up. $699 plus upgrades puts this squarely outside the realm of casual listeners and those wanting buy one on a whim. People tend to get real picky once they start approaching and cross over the $1k mark. Uniden competing near this price point? We'll see. I suspect A LOT of people are going to be buying this directly from Amazon where they can return it without any type of penalty.
If Uniden does have a hit on their hands, I'll be glad to buy one. Whistler is starting to stagnate and AOR/Icom keep forgetting that some people want the ability to follow trunked systems. I cut my teeth on Uniden rigs. My very first "brand new" scanner was a BC60XLT and I still have my BC780XLT. It would be a proud moment for me to finally own a new Uniden product that isn't a series of compromises, empty promises, and engineering mistakes.
