LED Windows above the display

From the manual, pg 15.

The two LED indicators above the display indicate charge status (right LED; red when charging,
green when charged) and channel alert indication (left LED).

I second that request, and would like Jon to video the first Dremel session...

I don't use a Dremel, I use a drill press with an x-y table and digital readouts on the x, y, and z axes. And templates with the locations of holes and edges labeled, so I can "color by numbers" to get the correct dimensions and hole locations.

I use a chop saw and sledgehammer to get the case open though.

Sign me up in Los Angeles. I will one of the first to put down deposit on this baby. Thanks Uniden.
Exactly, same here. I'll buy one the first day it's available for sale. If it properly handles simulcast, I'll then buy the base / mobile version the first day it's available for sale.

Haven't seen it yet. Is there going to be a mobile/base unit?

SDS100

The overall appearance of the radio reminds me of the Kenwood TH-D74A, which is an excellent digital transceiver. Great job Upman, when can I pre-order the SDS100? Also, will there be a mobile version?

That was awesome Jon!

When I saw this new radio scanner I was like wow what a nice radio this could be for certain areas. But in SoCal and in Florida the encryption wave have double punched us and made the hobby fold for us. If everything was not being locked down at such a fast past the past few years then yes maybe a purchase for this radio would be nice. After getting burned with the BCD436 and the 536 I lost all steam with scanners and Uniden. There has been no good faith to heal our wounds with no buy back plans or to make us all happy again. Unfortunately we can't hold our breaths these days.

By reading alot of peoples post I dont see alot of excitement. I see the majority people are debating why buy a 700 dollar radio which can't fix the obvious of locked down radio systems. The other modulation like NXDN and DMR and EDACS and the rest is really not a big deal and other costs are involved ontop of already buying a 700 dollar radio.

As time passes the hobby is not growing by adding NXDN and DMR and EDACS. These modulations in general is not going to grab the new generation coming up in the world. If these TRS systems that are getting upgraded for public safety systems were staying in the clear then this radio would be exiting.

The trend moving forward with scanner technology is just not going to make it big time anymore. Sorry to be a downer but we all need to be realistic on where we see our hobby going and its not taking an upward tick.

There's encryption everywhere. There's more to this hobby than just listening to the cops..

Looks very cool, but I'm content to stick with my $24 dongle. $700 is like...$600 too much for me. :)

Will Uniden bring back Control Channel only search on the new model? One of the things I hate about the x36 series is the lack of CC only search when searching frequencies. The XT’s have this option. I know there is discover and analyzer modes but you have to have them entered in the radio already for them to be functional.

If you do conventional discovery, that will find the frequencies. Then you do trunking discovery to figure out the talkgroups.

The reason why they charge for digital modes is that Uniden has to pay royalties to DVSI to use that technology in their scanners, so blame DVSI for their greed.
It's either that or charge $1000, which would likely negatively impact their sales and force me to pay extra for ProVoice (or other unwanted modes for some people)

It's not out of the realm of possibility that DVSI required them to do it this way.
As far as their profit margin is concerned, who knows, but it needs to be worth it for them to design and manufacture.

Nice to see someone "gets it".

I will guarantee they are paying royalties (primarily because UPMan said it before). Uniden is still marketing digital scanners with true trunking. The only way to legally do that is to pay DVSI their royalties.

As was said... do you charge $1000 (I would say list $850) for everyone or let them pick the modes they need? If Uniden put it in every scanner they would be paying royalties on every scanner even if the user doesn't need that mode.

Due to U.S. Government regulations I doubt the SDR part of the scanner will be DC to Daylight? That's too bad.

Exactly what regulation? SDRs cover DC to daylight (almost). Only the scanner part is subject to the ECPA (assuming that's what you are referencing).

How much are the royalties? I could understand passing on that cost but cmon. A scanner does not cost much to make. Unit cost is probably less than $100 per scanner. So $100 from $699 that's $599 profit. Isn't that enough?

Nice assumption. Where did you get $100? The display likely costs the better part of $100.

I hope it performs better than the $10 SDR dongles! (more in line with the $200 ones)

How much are the royalties? Likely the better part of what is being charged.

Contact DVSI and ask them.

I would like to see an optional GPS that could plug in. Something fairly small.

There is no reason that can't be done provided power is available at the USB port. I suggested a GPS dongle earlier in the thread.
