Tin,
Are 355.8 & 365.7 new freqs?
I have never heard those freqs before.

Thanx Tin...I can only imagine it must be pretty noisy down that area tonight.

Sounds like we might have a new freq. 255.8

It sounded like that somebody was on this freq.I heard them calling another flight.
Maybe it was bleedover?????

Just to fill in the blank for the newcomers/lurkers - UHF Guard is 243.0 (which is exactly twice the standard VHF guard of 121.5) Interesting someone heard an ELT there, but you gotta wonder if it was caused by someone landing too hard, and jarring the xmtr as happens so often in the civilian world

Just a quick note from Ch. 13 news

(WJZ) Maryland National Guard helicopter pilots trained this afternoon with Baltimore County firefighters to help prepare then to battle brushfires from the sky.

The Black Hawk pilots are just back from Iraq and, in the driest March on record, are now training to battle a recent strong of brushfires in Maryland.

So far this year more than 400 fires have broken out in the state. Firefighters tell WJZ's Derek Valcourt help from the sky could come in handy.

"There's certain areas that take a while to access by either vehicle or by personnel," says Baltimore County Fire Captain Daniel Lemmon. "This would cut down on that time quite considerably."

The U-H60 Black Hawk is rigged with what is called a "bambi bucket," which dangles beneath the chopper, holding up to 600 gallons of water. Fire crews in the water then help direct pilots to where the fires would be using GPS technology.

Both Baltimore County and Maryland National Guard Helicopters crews will be back out training Wednesday morning.

Once trained, the Blackhawk pilots could be putting their new skills to work by helping fire crews in other states as well.

Just caught Chopper with Phillips AAF tower 126.1500 saying he is going to get the bucket and
head for fire on Range 6. So dry maybe Aberdeen range should have no trouble starting fires.

Also saw an awsome flight of 2 MH-53's 1540z following the Delware River south today.Caught them later on Dover appch 132.4250.

" HUSTLER 410 flt of 2 Marine Corp H-53's enroute New River KNCA via Cape Charles area".

A few minutes ago I saw MUSSELL-03 fly by enroute to Mt. Weather. Just now I heard him with MUSSELL Ops 292.2

1609- A BULLY flight is up and on 139.9. They mentioned a ramp freeze and something about a Gulfstream.

1618- MUSSELL-01 with DCA Tower 120.75

1625- GUNNY flight with Washington Approach 270.275. They're waiting to land, doing right turns around the DME and getting anxious about their remaining fuel.

1652- TRACK-66 on 378.1 wondering about the flight service transmitter and advising they are receiving them from 85 nautical miles out.

Yes, you have the BULLY flight that took off from Andrews at 1920 and a RAVAGE flight airborne at 1925. Both flights went from TRACON 348.725 to tac 139.15 (BULLY) and 143.6 (RAVAGE) to ZDC-Calvert 281.4 to Pax Approach 305.2 to discrete Pax 256.5 for their work. GAMMA RAY is the FAC on the ground at Pax. One hour duration from 3500-30000 feet.

This afternoon, from 1430-1640, GUNNY and BULLY flights did exactly the same work following the same freq pattern as the BULLY/RAVAGE flight tonight. Coming back, they used TRACON 270.275 and then Tower 349.0.

That TRACK 66 flight logged by Travis above at 1652 was interesting. He's a C-21 from Air Force Flight Standards that was up to check the antenna/transmitter on the 378.1 freq at Andrews because of all the trouble aircraft have making contact on that freq. This flight was an antenna checkout and, as mentioned, he said he was hearing the Andrews transmitter when he was 85 nautical miles from Andrews. The work has been ongoing for the past three weeks or so. They first replaced the transmitter and that made no difference. Apparently, they are getting around to doing something with the antenna now.

DRAGNET E3C from Tinker AFB OK with Giant Killer on 249.8 asking if there is going to be a tanker in AR-636 tonight. GOLIATH, a probable AWACS type, was working with Langley F-15s this afternoon 13-1400 hours. Among them was a six ship RABID flight and a HUSKY flight working 363.9 for ops.

DRAGNET expecting F-15s from Langley...DUDE 81 (2 ship), DRAGON 71 (four ship), PANAMA 81 (4 ship) and TROJAN 91 (4 ship). This gives us an ID for TROJAN as a callsign for Langley as proposed last night rather than the Oceana NAS F/A-18s on most callsign lists. [2008 on 249.8 with Giant Killer]

At 2030, the BULLY and RAVAGE flights say they have 5 and 10 minutes respectively of playtime left so they'll be heading home soon with a stop on 139.9 with SOF to give mission results and maintenance status. They check out of the Pax River area on 281.8 just before going to WATERGATE on 139.9 with mission results. And back on the runway at just about 2100.

At the same time, the F-15s are just starting to enter the work area with Giant Killer. Believe the DUDE 81 flight just entered. They should be working in area W-72 so might be difficult to hear when at lower altitudes. GK's ops freq 292.3 becomes active at 2037. So does 373.1 at 2042. And 391.2 with the DRAGON flight at 2058. At 2103, both the TROJAN 91 and DUDE 81 flights show up on 391.2 also. Looks like that freq is the starting point and then they fan out from there. PANAMA flight (I think) into GK's area at 2106 and states they'll be using low lighting and flares. Nope...PANAMA 71 entering on 238.1 at 2111. Don't know who that last flight was. PANAMA to 16 Prime on 389.1. DRAGON 73 and 74 RTB at 2119...71 and 72 stay in the work area.

Northrup-Grumman 123.225 active 2040.

I know we've referenced those test flights on «313.7» in the past but I don't think we've ever had an ID on it. Today, all through the 1100 hour, the aircraft was active running tests from items on cards as they normally do. He called "Van" and "TRADER JACK" and identified himself as 537 through most of it. Finally, he gave his full ID as WATERBUG 537 which makes him part of the Force Aircraft Test Squadron at Patuxent NAS. "Van" is apparently the ground station he is talking to and TRADER JACK is another airborne platform. I never heard the TRADER JACK transmitter but from context he can be identified as an aircraft. First heard at 1111 and still going as of 1308. At 1229, he's trying to contact TRADER JACK with no joy and begins calling "210" which is, apparently, another aircraft. At 1319, WATERBUG 537 says they better hurry finishing something because he's RTB at this time.

1214: Have a pair of fighters - probably Naval - using «363.3» as a tac freq. No callsigns heard yet. Heard them for a few minutes and then about 20 minutes of silence and now back up at 1238. Occasional transmissions until 1252.

1043-1217: Have something else new today. I have what I think is a U.S. Customs aircraft using 139.075 for what appears to be a test of some kind. He identifies with the usual type Customs callsign for this area - 1C7 (One Charlie Seven) - which is the only reason I put the Customs ID on him. At one point, he calls "Ground." Early in the flight he mentioned "operating in five minute increments" and that he "didn't need the coordinates now." He also told the ground station to do a radio check on the UHF radio but I never could find that frequency if they used it. The aircraft is using a digital signal (the scanner does flash the P25 flag when he transmits) but I'm actually getting much clearer reception in AM mode than I am in FM/NFM. Last heard at 1217 when he said he was 45 miles out. (Out from what/where wasn't specified.) In all this time, there have only been perhaps 7-8 transmissions.
[Good point made by BMT asking if I monitored the 282.425 UHF Customs freq when they said they wanted a radio check on the UHF radio. I did and it wasn't there. I should have pointed that out because others may think of that too. Good thinking Jack.]

And since we're doing new things today...at 1226 I heard two aircraft on «283.75». One said he was in a touch and go and then would be in the pattern for a bit. They were so loud and clear in an obvious low altitude situation that they almost had to be at BWI or Martin State - much too strong for a runway like Andrews from my location. My first thought was the long lost frequency for CRAB Ops (MD-ANG C-130J 135th Airlift Squadron) but that remains to be seen. More transmissions between the two aircraft at 1305. I should mention there is a CRAB 55 in the area with Phillips AAF on 126.15 and later landing at Martin State around 1345.

(Ref below): Thanks Dave. Yes, I did. Heard them - two RAVENs - with Ops on 347.2 and BWI TRACON 290.475 as they were coming home at 1145. Just before that I heard Bollen Range 237.2 active and prior to that Warren Grove Range 283.1. The RAVENs were at one or both ranges I suppose. I haven't logged any of the usual things today. I've been concentrating on new/different stuff. Nothing I know of coming your way at this time.

Continued below if needed.....

TinEar,
I don't know if you caught them but a Raven flight of two were up at the Duke getting some gas this morning with Steel 71. All the usual freqs were used (353.85, 301.60, 338.3) except Raven 1 first popped up on 261.95 with Cleveland Center. The last time he did this, they were using a low level training route, VR-705 I think. They wrapped up and headed South at about 10:40 this morning. They were using their 142.30 TAC Freq.

Looks like the Duke is going to be active between 13:00 and 14:00, do you have anything coming up my way?

Washington Center new freq 235.625. At 1310, I have a pair of aircraft through the ZDC area (but can't catch their callsign yet). They went from Linden 319.1 to Montebello 284.7 and were handed off from there to 235.625. They definitely called Washington Center on that freq. I had previously mentioned 307.025 as being new for ZDC but had never heard more then just "Center" being called on this one --- until now. So, we've got at least two new ZDC freqs to get identified. Apparently, they are having trouble communicating on 235.625 so they go back to Montebello on 284.7 but are now so weak I can't copy them. I believe their next stop was with Norfolk TRACON on 370.925. ZDC-Norfolk for 235.625???? If so, it would replace 327.8.

363.3: The freq has remained active. Here's where it gets complicated....
Heard the two aircraft mention changing to various freqs - 343.7 and 121.05. Heard the end of a call on 343.7 and then callsigns OTIS 21 calling SPADE 11 on 121.05. Then there is another change to 121.67(5) where I hear OTIS 21 again and mention of Hopewell and Cherry Point.
OTIS is listed for a KC-130 from VMGR-252, MCAS Cherry Point. These are the guys on 363.3 which sounded like fighters earlier but apparently they are KC-130s.
SPADE 11 is listed for F-16s from Shaw. Just prior to hearing OTIS 21 call SPADE 11 on 121.05, I heard a very loud groundstation on Guard 121.5 telling SPADE 11 to change to 121.05. I never heard the SPADE 11 aircraft itself - just calls to him.
343.7 and 121.05 are both Reagan TRACON (aircraft at the FLUKY intersection) and 121.675 is ZDC-Montebello.
That was a workout.

1357 there is a BASH 31 flight (F-16 VA-ANG Richmond) with Norfolk TRACON 370.925 and then to Giant Killer 249.8 to enter W-386...from there it's "Push 281.6." Also have VA-ANG tac freq 141.875 active.
At 1403 it's BASH 31 calling HUNTRESS on the 281.6 freq.
(I didn't have this freq listed for HUNTRESS.)

I also have two U/I aircraft (one male, one female) on 140.35 talking about which side of the airport the unit is on wherever it is they're going. At 1407 it's two more male pilots chatting - same freq.

1409: Three F-22A aircraft on Langley tac 233.525
1409: F-15s on Langley tac 358.85
1411: TORCH 13, single ship (F-15 Langley), into GK's area on 238.1 at FL 230.
1412: HARP 21 flight into GK's area at FL 230 on 238.1/249.8 (This callsign is no doubt from Langley also and should be added to the callsign list. Several new callsigns showing up recently.)
1415: HARP 21, flight of six, with HUNTRESS on that 281.6 freq. Checking in at FL 230.
1415: Langley tac freqs 276.675 and 315.85 active.
1416: It's the HARP flight on Langley tac 358.85 (Make these F-15s)
1418: HARP flight leader, while on 281.6, mentions Blue Air freq will be 265.4 (HARP will be Red Air)
1419: MAI TAI 14 into GK's area on 249.8 (flight of four and maybe six) will work with HARP
Damn...there is just wave after wave of Langley fighters setting up for an exercise. HARP also mentions B-52s in the exercise.
1421: TBOLT 51 flight (F-16 Richmond) into GK's area 233.7 to work in W-72 at FL 230
1422: Richmond tac freq «141.825» active
1422: TBOLT says his flight will be MARSA with WOLF 31 and TONGA 41 flights which are both F-15s from Langley.
1426: It's the MAI TAI flight calling HUNTRESS on that Blue Air freq 265.4»
There have been very clear transmissions from both HARP and HARM callsigns but I believe they should all be HARP. HARP is working with the BASH F-16 flight from Richmond on 281.6.

The B-52s in this exercise (whether real or simulated) are to use callsign - or be referenced as - BADGER. That's per the HARP flight leader and also have reference from MAI TAI flight leader giving a BRA to the BADGER.

1437: Have callsign CHILL 44 (B-52 Minot AFB ND) on the 281.6 freq talking with HARP so it looks like we really do have B-52s in this exercise.
1438: Also have a HAWK (U/I) flight on the 281.6 freq.
1448: MAD DOG 91 flight (F-15 Langley) with ZDC-Cape Charles 256.8. Not sure whether this flight is going to or coming from the exercise area.
1450: BULLY flight - F-16 - off the deck at Andrews with TRACON 348.725 and then ZDC-Calvert 281.4 and over to Pax Approach 305.2 at FL 15,000. Then to BayWatch 256.5, and to 143.6 tac with GAMMA RAY FAC. He's a single ship which is why there was no tac freq heard earlier. He's an F-16, FAC/A certified. He mentions there are more fighters coming behind him...and he'll rack and stack them and be the laser designator for all of them. A little later an ANGRY flight shows up - using tac 139.15 - and works targets at Pax Range with BULLY and GAMMA RAY.
1454: TORCH (x4) and MAI TAI (x4) flights leaving GK's area, heading for Cape Charles «249.8» And then at least some of the HARP and BASH flights are behind them...with BASH direct Snow Hill. All the Langley guys are going HEELS, Langley.

1500 is break time. Time for a well deserved cold one.

And here are our two B-52s leaving the area.
1526: CHILL 45 (flight of two, with CHILL 44) out of GK's area on «249.8» and is sent to 257.7
1527: CHILL 45 Heavy at FL 280 with ZDC-Salsibury 257.7. Asks for UHF and gets 379.3
1529: CHILL 44 to ZDC-Bay 379.3 and calls a couple of times with no joy so goes back to 257.7. Still there as of 1533 and still at FL 280.
1534: CHILL 45 reports direct Flat Rock...still on 257.7 and is handed off again to 379.3
1535: CHILL 45 Heavy to ZDC-Bay 379.3 checking in at FL 280. He calls Washington Center a couple of times and apparently has no joy again.
1537: CHILL 45 back to 257.7 to report no joy 379.3. (At 1539, the CHILL flight was handed off to a new freq - and I MISSED it. They don't appear to be on any of the UHF ZDC freqs. Must have been given a VHF freq.)
1543: Found them again...CHILL 44 with ZDC-Gordonsville 351.9.
1544: CHILL 45 Heavy with ZDC-Gordonsville 351.9 reporting FL 280.
1548: CHILL 44 with ZDC-Marlinton 319.0 FL 280
1553: CHILL 45 Heavy with ZDC-Marlinton 319.0 reports FL 280. (Last heard 1557)

1556: BULLY 1 needs gas so is RTB from Pax Range...143.6/256.5/281.4/335.5/349.0

Before quitting time, let me explain something about the B-52s in the exercise. They were acting as targets for the Langley F-15s. The reason they were being called BADGER was, apparently, because the targets were playing the role of Russian Tupolev TU-16 BADGER bombers. That's the best explanation I have for the BADGER designation and it almost makes sense.

I heard one of the CHILLs on 239.8. I couldn't copy much of anything, but I copied someone reporting weather conditions 70 miles west of Flat Rock. This was just before they appeared on the other ZDC freqs. One was on 319.0 ZDC-Marlinton briefly.

At the same time Nighthawk-11 is inbound to Mt. Weather.

Good Afternoon,
1613: Caught Chill 44 transitioning through the area talking to Cleveland Center Sandusky Discrete on 348.675.
