Sorry if this is the incorrect place for this, but this is the first time I've experienced such ducting/skip. Is there an opening on VHF-Hi? Just turned on my scanner, and am picking up NOAA Station KJY99 on 162.525 MHz from Accomack VA, loud and clear all the way up here in Middlesex County NJ. I am monitoring on a Pro-95 and an indoor J-Pole.

Again, this is the first time I've experienced such skip, so even though its just a weather station and its not as far as some of the skip I've read about, its still pretty exciting for me haha...

Sometimes I will get a opening too and am able to hear other dept's on my scanners, but its probably due to the weather conditions at the time.

I was once mobile in Wichita, KS, and, on my 40 watt 2 meter (145 MHz) mobile rig, hit my favorite repeater back home (in Dallas), some 300 or so miles away. Pretty exciting. Ducting is amazing.

very good catch! I've heard them on rare occasion with my simple handheld antenna around sundown here in Northeast NJ most recent was 5-30-11 (I know the date due to a recording i took of the catch)

does anyone else here use NOAA channels to sort of measure/monitor when conditions are favorable for openings?

yes I check for vhf openings and to see if my cables and antennas are working. I will turn on noaa and one at a time check and see what I can here. if I here only one or two then there is no opening. if I can here six of the seven with a least three bars then I can pick up new York city for here in pa. with a ground plane inside the house. and I check the vhf propagation maps to see where the red area covers the map works well doing this last night I picked up queens fdny on 154.400 and 160.2800 ems for new York.

Serious Band opening in the Northeast

Wow I am hearing things on VHF and UHF at least 400 miles away. I am talking on 2 meter ham repeaters on a quarter watt that are 300 miles away. Listen to 161.800. 161.950 to hear automated radio checks from marinas. I am hearing some from Delaware and Cape Cod. And they are very low power output transmitters.
Happy Field Day :p

Really? The map shows that its still there?

yes opening now but you asked about Sat. in your orrig. post. I am just responding to that question now.

But yes the map shows a huge opening now, but I am unable to listen to anything right now. Inside of a building with no ears to the outside. :(
