Good day,

Visiting Maui next week 2/18.

Besides what is listed here in radioreference.com, is there anything else that's worth tuning into? Not just Maui, but the Islands in general as well.

I also noticed there are no Alpha Tags on the conventional Public Safety listing. Any news there?

I see that P25 is "pending" for the Maui County Public Safety trunked system.

I have a P25 enabled RS Pro-106.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

The Maui County 800MHz trunked system is still analog. And the traffic is light enough that I have no trouble listening to it with a conventional non-trunked scanner.

There is some traffic on VHF marine. As with most places, it tends to be hailing on channel 16 and then moved to another channel. Sector Honolulu has a gangbuster of a transmitter. My guess is that it is up on Haleakala somewhere. The CG detatchment at Maalea comes in weaker than most boats at the same distance.

There are lots of hotels and condos not in the database. You can do an FCC search in the vicinity of your hotel/condo to see if it pops up. Not much to listen though other than the typical "room 123 is ready" and "please drop a tv remote off at room 456".

I don't know what the story is with the conventional public safety. I've scanned that freq range a few times and haven't heard anything. Maybe it has been obsoleted by the 800MHz trunked system. Maybe it is backup or for use in remote areas. Hmmmmm.. I think I'll plug in the freqs again and see if there is anything nowdays.

If you listen to the air traffic control, you should know that one controller often transmits on several of the listed frequencies simultaneously. It helps to turn off the delay on the ATC freqs so you will pickup the aircraft reply, which may not be on the same freq as the controller transmission you were monitoring.

Thanks for the info.

Sector Honolulu?? Gangbusters = strong sig?

I've been doing the FCC search for the past week; of course it comes up like Vegas. A thousand property engineers and other hotel business of course.

All the public safety info on conventional 400Mhz is what I'm interest in checking out as it's all digital P25. In this part of WA it's only the new light rail to the airport. Zzzzzzzz.

Might have to find some military P25... we'll see.

Thanks!

Ooops. In real english, not slang: The local coast guard facility at Maalea has a relatively weak signal, and also does not appear to have a continuous watch on channel 16. My guess is that they have a transceiver and antenna at their sea level site at the harbor.

The 24 hour/day, 7 day/week channel 16 watch appears to be done remotely in Honolulu, using a transmitter site somewhere on the 10,000' volcano on Maui. The signal from that transmitter is very strong.

Listening to the Coast Guard is often amusing as a 18 year old kid in Honolulu, unfamiliar with local landmarks in Maui, attempts to communicate with local boat captains as they assist someone in trouble.

"Martidav" Visiting Maui next week 2/18. ----

I plan on going in June. I listed a request for Maui Fire and Police had many views, but no one posted the talk groups. When you are there, If you have time could you scan the control channels and post the talk groups? Seems no one wants to list the talk groups there?

Thanks

I'll do my best. Even if I have to sneak off into the bathroom at night. My 'ol lady is annoyed as it is that a few of my scanners are coming with. That's part of my vaca too, so she'll just have to deal. :)

Thanks,
D

I did try some scanning. I think due to my location in Kaanapali, position of the building, I wasn't able to pick up much. The strongest sig seemed to be AMR or the equivalent. We were go go go w/ activities, drunk or passed out. Only scan time was at night. Will try again in the Fall.
