Hey Everyone,

I was curious... From what I know, Wilmington Police operate off of 800mhz ANALOG but they are currently carrying the State of Delaware Digital Radio portables like DSP and NCCPD carry. HOW is this possible? What am I missing?

Any info is appreciated!

Thanks!

If memory serves, some Moto portables - XTS5000s perhaps - can be programmed either way, analog or digital. Baltimore county is equipping their personnel that way precisely because the jurisdictions that surround them are or will be going digital. It's an effective way to prepare for the future.
I suspect it would take the installation of a board and a system key of some type.

Wilmington PD may be using the XTS3000 series of radio which has been around for a while. It was the original portable issued when Delaware's 800 system went online in '99. The 3000 will do analog as well as digital trunking. There are still many, many XTS3000 and Sabers still in service around the state. Tne next-gen 2500 & 5000 are starting to make an appearance as companies add/replace units.

I belive that the P25 standard required Analog compatability for field equipment.

Hello,

WPD has the capability of using Digital TG's on the state system. There are also Mutual Aid TG's. When WPD had the "Blue Flu", Wilmington dispatched DSP and NCCoPD from the console in Wilmington using the Mutual Aid TG's.

Recently, WPD has used DSP TAC TG's for covert ops. The City of Wilmington was supposed to give the State its 7 frequencies in exchange for radios and equipment. They may be slowly converting over from Type IIi Hybrid to Type II ASTRO. NCCo is a busy system and can use the frequencies Wilmington uses.

Not everyone on the WPD force has radios capable of being used on the state system. There are plenty of AS3's still used and are handled down to other departments. Some have XTS3K Model II's, mostly the Bike Patrol around NCCo Court House and the infamous "Jump Out Squad".
