Yeah, he made a mistake but I think they wanted to make an example out of him, That from a retired LEO with 30+ years.

the NFA is no joke. Note how they only convicted him on the silencer charge... guaranteed felony and he's FFL (and FFL does not mean federal firearms license in this instance)

In 3+ decades, I helped investigate and prosecute all kinds of cases that even involved various federal agencies up to and including the Department of State (theft and embezzlement of local funds that were eventually put in the Barclay Bank in Sierra Leone). At any given time, they can all be jokes. I'm not trying to diminish what he did. It was wrong and he knew it but there were other options besides the one they government used.

Having said that, neither of us is privy to everything that took place leading up to his change of residence so I'm gonna just leave it alone now.

Where is the specific campaign info for the dim LCD for the 536HP? Also, if I bought my 536 from a private sale, will the repair campaign will Uniden still cover this repair? Just wanted to gather some info prior to shipping my unit in.

The trick seems to be to compare button backlight to display backlight in brightest dim setting.
Mine are at the same level but is still not bright enough and much darker than other displays.
It's sufficient in a darkened room but during normal daylighty with sunny weather it's not enough.
That's why I use a Samsung phone with Siren app that automaticly adjusts backlight to the enviroment for a better view experiance. Why cannot the scanner manufactures use a almost nil cost light sensor to adjust the backlight, like mobile phones do and pretty much any $500 device with a display. Even most television sets have light sensors or you would need to adjust contrast and brightnes or close the blinds and adjust the lightning in the room to get a good picture.

I just got tjhe instructions to send back my 436 & 536 radios. Can I send them back in the same package or do they have to go in separate packages? Any one know? Thanks, Bob

You can ship them in the same package. Be sure to adequately cushion them.

I know this is old news but I just happened across it while looking for something else. He was obviously a knowledgeable guy judging from his input to these forums so why he violated the Cardinal Rule of Employment** is a mystery to me...

I too just got my shipping label to ship my 436 & 536 back. Going to ship both together as you mentioned. Let’s see how long it takes, mine are going out today.

I have both the 436 and 536 scanners which were bought shortly after they were released around 4/5 years ago. I don't have the clock resetting problem and have never used the scanners much on the bright led setting. Will I eventually experience both the "clock" and "dimming led display" problems or are these issues only associated with a certain percentage of these scanners?

If you avoid using the 436 and 536 scanners at the brightest display setting can you avoid the "dimming display" problem completely?

The only real answer is who knows. It could happen it could not. Since it is a free fix less the cost of shipping I would to be safe send mine in if it were me. But that is a decision for you to make and no one else.

If it could be confirmed that avoiding the brightest display settings on the 436 and 536 scanners solved the dimming display problem I'd be inclined to just leave well enough alone.

I run my BCD536 on the medium brightness backlight setting and all that does is delay the gradual LED dimming. My radio needs to be sent in soon for repair as it is hard to read the display now. The LEDs in the display are just poor quality - decent LEDs would be expected to last more than 10 years.

So it's not the case that Uniden is over-driving the leds with a beyond spec., too high voltage at the brightest setting, but rather the quality of the leds themselves?

I sent my 536 for the LCD dim issue, and my 436 for a bad LCD pixel. Both were shipped back on Uniden's dime and were checked in yesterday. The status of mine show approx ship back date of 2/20...hopefully it's sooner than that!

The 20th would be 19 working days. That's about normal.

I always run them at their lowest setting and only for a duration when they first get a hit. My 536 had the issue and didn't realize until after I jacked up the brightness out of curiosity...thankfully they got it fixed.
