While I'm a little disappointed that DMR is not (for now) one of the modes these new scanners can decode, it's not a deal breaker for me. I'll buy the 536 just because I haven't bought a new scanner since the HP-1 and also because I refuse to buy a GRE/Whistler/Whatever scanner until and unless they solve the long standing issue of overload on VHF-HI frequencies.

The display on these new scanners looks marvelous. Mine will sit at home and be controlled maybe from other locations via the phone app.

One "request". I don't know if Uniden has or has not created the mobile app for Windows Phone 8, but if not, please consider it.

I'm looking forward to learning more about this scanner as the time grows closer for release. I'm still keeping my HP-1 though; its display combined with GPS is unbeatable for my annual road trips to points south.

Dimensions

Sorry if this has been asked already.... I skimmed through the posts but didn't see it. What are the dimensions of the new unit compared to the 996XT?

Is it the same overall size? I have mine installed in my Jotto console so I need it to the be the same dimensions.

It will fit a DIN-E sleeve, same as the 996.

I would like to have seen EDACS w/Provoice included as that's what is in use in my area, but it isn't a deal killer. Still plenty to be excited about. Heck, I'd be happy just for the larger display on both this and the handheld version.

I really do not think you are going to see anyone put much energy into EDACS or ProVoice considering that it is already a year beyond EOL and full manufacturer support for infrastructure parts is gone in less than five years. Any agency that isn't actively planning on replacing EDACS infrastructure is way beyond the Eight Ball and risking major problems in the very near future. Those that plan on riding EDACS as long as they possibly can are hoarding parts from other systems that have been taken offline.

Yes I agree, details on the reception of simulcast systems are needed. Some people are unable to monitor at all, I know they probably did not significantly upgrade the hardware for this but in the past firmware updates have solved some problems.

I'd chime in with the DMR TRBO/NXDN decoding. As with anything that might need licensing, UPMan, has Uniden thought of firmware keys? Since the 536 has WiFi and Internet connectivity, we could pay and activate only the modes we want to decode.

But a detachable screen would be great. The RH96 failed because it was expensive for what it was - you paid dearly to unnecessarily duplicate the front panel. Many amateur radios offer detachable front faces, and all commercial radios offer a remote-mount kit. Not everyone is phone-touchscreen happy. I'd pay for a remote head because my vehicle has no room to put a full scanner in but a remote head can be neatly tucked away.

Although these suggestions are probably a pipe dream. I don't resemble any of the "users" that Uniden found for their intro video. LMAO.

You're probably right. I honestly have no idea what, if anything, the agencies that use provoice around where I live are planning. I would be surprised, though, if they even begin rolling out a new system of some sort within the next 5 years.

Well one thing Paul said everyone is over looking.

Coming in March added wifi features.

I hope this means the radio will be able to receive the feeds from Broadcasify.

A question on the display. Does it show the system, group and channel all at once? For instance if I was scanning the Connecticut state police and had the system as CSP the group as say Troop D and the channel being heard was troop D Dispatch, I would see all of that?

how will these new scanners handle encrypted talk groups on 3.6 baud rate and 9.6 baud rate systems? for example,on my psr-600 it skips over encrypted talk groups on the ohio marcs 800 trs. the psr-800 gives you i think 3-4 options when you come across encrypted talk groups.

Yes. The display shows the following:

Favorite List Alias
System Name
Site Name
TG Alias
TGID
UID or Alias
Department
Service Type
CTCSS/DCS/NAC
P25 Mode/Phase I/II & Time Slot

Or, if you don't need all that info, simply change the Display Mode to 3 Lines of Text. The Font Size is HUGE! :)

Yes more features will come out in March.

As everybody has known in the past that when new radios come out there will be some issues with the radio and new firmware updates and software updates will come in time.

Its just not this was with scanner radios. Its with all technology. Thank GOD for firmware and software updates. That is what is going to make these radios a mean lean fighting machine in time. The bugs will all be worked out.

I have faith in Uniden. This company has deep pockets. They spent a lot of money on marketing. That video was awesome and very professional.

Also, too they probably has more proto-type scanners in the works with different modulation types in the works. They are probably running the business like APPLE now. Give just enough to hook the fish on the line and bring out something better in another year or two. Got to love it

I for one am very happy with these new scanners. Here in Western, NY Monroe, Genesee, and Ontario Counties are switching to a Harris P25 Phase II System. RIght now the system is up and running in Ontario and Monroe Counties and soon it will be up in Genesee and will launched in Phase II with Monroe and Ontario to follow.
I hate GRE so I will be buying a the 536 and 436 when available. Also the wifi feature looks awesome. When I am away from my house I can still listen to my fire department and control the channel from the app. Right now I have a feed on Radio Reference and it scans our dispatch channel and our two working channels. I hate when we have a fire or accident and I can not control the scanner and hit manual to keep it on the working channel. I still have to listen to the dispatch channel. So this feature will work great for me.
Can't wait - Awesome Product UpMan

Wayne, Great point too ..... Well - guess im just behind the tech again .... Connect Plus and Capacity plus also delve into that E word we're not supposed to use around here. Wonder if that plays a role in TRBO not being on this scanner?! or maybe it's not as common a protocol as P25? A few D/FW TRBO users are rumored to be dumping their systems and going P25 so maybe the TRBO bug is running out for Public Safety. Then again, a lot of business systems are moving that way So one has to wonder why no TRBO on the newest scanner by UNIDEN.

Do we know if the dimensions are any different between this and the 996XT? So I can order Havis faceplates now?

I like it, the money is set aside and hopefully Fry's will carry them.

Mable ..... WOW UPMan, stay out of the cow pastures at dawn Bro!

I think Paul and everyone else did a fantastic job in coming up with these two new models. I hope to get the 536 as soon as it becomes available, and then as soon as possible after that, get the 436, as they both seem like awesome radios to me.

Thanks Upman for all you do for us that are interested in scanning.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.1.2; SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 Build/JZO54K) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/30.0.1599.92 Mobile Safari/537.36)

This is what all the hype was about? Let's basically repackage an existing scanner, throw in a few new features, and totally ignore new technologies? Yeah, I think I'll pass.

P25 and Milair

Two questions about this new scanner, 1. The manual says default bands for 380-400 are 12.5 trunking can that be changes to 25 AM for that portion of the milair band? 2. Has Uniden improved the P25 handling or is this the same processing as the 996xt? (I admit I have not read that portion of the manual) So far I like what I see, would also have liked MotoTRBO but not a deal breaker.
