Checking In

Bill in NW FL (Walton Co)

I work at Eglin AFB, so the ride through the reservation is great for picking up area EMS, SO, PD, and FD. My oldest son (12) and I are studying for our Tech license. Hope to test in next couple of months.

Elroy Jetson, employed as a radio technician, somewhere in Central Florida between
Daytona, Orlando, and Vero Beach. My radio test bench is "fully equipped", and most
of the equipment used is my personal property though it's used on the job.

I monitor all trunked Moto and Edacs radio systems in range, and some that are a bit out
of range. As my job involves frequent travel, I sometimes just get to "visit" certain
systems, like the Nashville, Tennessee metro system.

I speak Smartnet, SmartZone, and EDACS.

No base operation at this time. All my scanning is mobile or portable.

Radio equipment owned:

Most of it! I have working examples of most major public safety oriented portable radios made by Motorola or GE(whatever...) in the last 20 years or longer.
And I've had examples of some that I no longer own.

What I use...my "scanner" at work is a GE Rangr w/S850 control head, mounted on the side of my tech bench.
Portables: Motorola Astro Sabers in all bands, regular Sabers, HT600s, MT1000s, and M/A-Com (GE) M-PDs, M-PAs,
LPE-200s, Jaguar 700Ps, Jaguar 700Pis, and Jaguar 7100IPs, the latter in VHF and 800 both.
I will soon have an XTS5000. Looking forward to it.

Also I'm resurrecting an Orion (800) from the dead piles of parts I've got to work with. It's almost ready...just one receiver
issue to work out and it'll be good to go.

I try very hard to cultivate a positive relationship with the people who work for both
the Moto and M/A-Com shops. This makes sense both politically and from a business
standpoint. Make friends, not enemies. Friends let you get away with more stuff!

elroyjetson, can you post your shack in the shack forum? It sounds like it would be a good picture to look at with all that equiptment.

I don't really have a shack...just my company workbench, equipment, and storage for a
truly ungodly number of radio projects that I'm working on in my spare time.

Current count of radio projects either under way or awaiting something....
maybe 150 or so. Not all of them will become working radios, though. Some will be
parts pigs to get others working.

I pick one, evaluate it, and try to get it working in a reasonable amount of time. If I
don't succeed, I make a label with notes on it, stick the label to the board, set it aside,
and pick up another board and repeat the process. I get the easier radios out of the
way pretty quickly and leave the tougher ones for parts or for later work.

I'm getting damned good at surface mount repair and rework!

I live in Miami Florida...

I monitor both dade county EDACS systems, dade county fire rescue, the villige (idiots) of pinecrest, intercity, 800 mutual aid, sometimes other random stuff like homestead or whatever...

as far as equipment goes... radios are all mostly GE / Ericsson / M/A-Com.... using a pair of 800mhz MDX's for monitoring the two EDACS control channels... 800 orion to listen and setup to talk on the EM-1 through EM-5 talkgroups (I have permission!)... have a pair of UHF orions and a UHF KMC that i use for ham and listening to miami dade fire rescue... 2 vhf orions that i use to monitor my ham repeater and intercity and sometimes i scan homestead also... 900mhz orion for ham use... 6m orion for 6m ham... also have a Kenwood D700 for ham and APRS, a kenwood TS-570s for HF-6m, and a PRO-2055 just in case i need a VFO outside ham :)

I also have 3 VHF MDX's with opentrackers and GPS modules in them for the MS-150 bike tour down here as APRS trackers

in the car i have a 110w VHF and 100w UHF orion, the VHF is on a system head, the UHF is on a hand-held control head... have all my ham stuff and some (rx only) public safety in there also like MDFR (UHF) intercity and homestead (VHF)

my repeater is in downtown miami at about ~500 feet on 147.345Mhz... its currently a pair of MDX's with a CAT-200 with some extra cooling on the TX one... getting about 25watts after the circulator and duplexer which isnt bad... antenna is a DB-224E (ham split)... im replacing that soon with a Mastr III hooked to an arcom controller, just need to finish up the wiring harness... im planning on putting echolink on it when i replace it also...

i also have my temproray uhf repeater on the channel 6 tower (on 442.350mhz) while we figure out whats going to happen as far as a new one - previous trustee passed away... :(
... its down at the moment becuase we had to replace the tower-mounted cabinet (at ~1400ft)... but its a UHF KMC and a 100w UHF Delta at abut 45~50watts (delta is the TX) hooked to a NHRC repeater controller...

and finally handhelds... VHF P7100 P25 etc... M-RK VHF low and high (w/aegis)... M-RK uhf low, mid, and high (mid has AEGIS)... 800mhz M-RK (RX only public safety, and again TX on EM-1 through EM-5) and 900mhz M-RK (ham)... and a kenwood D7a APRS handheld... Motorola EX500 470-520 for work (call it the fisher price radio it gets lost in my pocket lol)

have a bunch of PCS's and M-PD's too that i use for projects... a bunch of spare orions, MDXs, Deltas and such... and i also have some /\/\oto crap laying around that i havent really played with that much.. some astro spectras (think they are all VSLEP eeww) and regular spectras... i have piles of maxtracs that im probably going to use for a large streaming server soon hehe :)

Just an update:

Since I got the scanner mounted in the car and a nicer antenna, I've been listening to the following Fire/Rescue/Police (when un-encrypted):

Jacksonville (TRS and conventional), Bradford, Clay, Alachua (TRS and conventional), Union, Columbia, Putnam, Nassau, St. Johns

Also listen to the Med channels for those counties, as well as ShandsCair, Trauma 1 and Life Flight.

The shack consists of:

Uniden BCD-996T.

That's it ;)

flecom - did you really meant 1400 ft?
That repeater must have some kind of footprint.

yes, the ch6 tower is 1,841 feet tall... a little shorter than the previous channel 6 tower that fell during hurricane andrew back in 1992... and yes it does have a huge footprint! i could key up the uhf machine from west palm without a problem

Live in Cape Coral, work in Bonita Springs since 2001 (Southwest FL). PRO 90 scanner is always on and goes everywhere I do. Lee County Public Safety is the only trunk group I listen to.

Been scannin' since the late 80s.

With hi capacity NIMH Duracel rechargeables soldered in, and a quick connect plug with resistor so that it charges off of my car, it's an addiction.

Hollyweird public safety

Dawson said:
What's up all?? I'm in Hollywood, Fl and listen mostly to the Seminole Police and also frequencies throughout the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel/Casino.

My wife is Seminole and I"m on the Seminole Reservation, so now you know why I listen to those frequencies :)

I have a PRO-528 and i'm VERY new to this whole scanner thing

I'm currently looking for Hollywood/Davie/Broward Sheriff frequencies

Any help would be appreciated!
Hello Dawson, Hollyweird is digital (expensive and complex radio needed). For Broward, see the database. I have a 528, and it's fine for that. Also check database for FT. Lauderdale airport, (Fll) Airnav.com has all freqs for fll, and north perry (hwo) if you want them. Austin

Monitoring and such Escambia County

Pensacola, I can pick up from Baldwin County Ala. to Ft. Walton, Fla. and north to Brewton, Ala.
But I mainly monitor Pensacola Trunking.
I have been monitoring emergency services since .......1972? Tunable "police band" radios!
I Dispatch for Escambia County Public Safety County Fire and EMS since 1989.
So I tend not to listen to that too much when off duty.
Sometimes I like to listen to CSX Railroad.
Never got hooked on Air or Mil.

OK we are officially Tampa residents now. PRO-2045 AND PRO-95 as the radios. Antenna wise bunch of stock duckies as well as center loaded Radio Shack Telescoping Antenna. Mostly Civil Aviation/Airliner monitoring.
