I think this may be Cloud Tower. If it is and the post before was the Clay tower which i received as well. Then Washington, Cloud, And Clay are all up in this area. However from what i've still heard they are still using conventional towers.

COWS at the State Fair

Yes, there will be a COW at the State Fair according to an article in the Hutchinson News this weekend. They plan to have at least one at the Fair Grounds, that will then remain in Hutchinson for about a week after the Fair to see if an extra tower will help with some of the "holes" in the current system. PD and EMS units are noting some of the problem areas around town now. With the COW van available they are going to try some different locations to see how well a "local" node inside the City Limits will help. They have no funding right now the article says, but if the experiment is successful, they can work on the funding issues.....

Hutch fire was testing the new system today. They are having the same problems that Hutch PD is. They were in one of the conference rooms at the Grand Prairie Hotel, and they were testing from other locations as well. They could hear, but the could not transmit. I was hearing a lot of going digital and then a clear voice saying you were garbled. Once they got outside or in the truck there were no problems. It may be a while before they switch over.

Edit: Buhler fire was just dispatched to a grass fire in Western Harvey county. They tried using the new 800 radios, but they had to switch to VHF. Buhler PD hasn't had any problems though.

Gee, and to think in the original plan there was supposed to be a tower in western Harvey County that the state never built...oh well.

Having a COW at the fair is nothing new, this is I think the 3rd year it's been there. Just gets used a little bit more each year. Guess this year trunking might come into play.

As long as they keep in mind the fact that the COW only has a 100 foot mast while they are testing. They moved one of the COWs onto Topeka when their main 300' radio tower collapsed about 5 years ago. It was okay within a few miles but in no way replaced the 300' tower coverage.

The Buhler fire issue may not have been a radio problem. They were going to use the Reno County Event Ch 1 TG. Another FD(didn't hear which one) in the county tried to use it yesterday and couldn't use it. They were able to use the Reno Co EMS/Fire TG without a problem.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office was up and running on TG 2281 all day on Septemeber 1. At first, in the
morning they went digital really bad with the garbled sound. Then as the day went along it really sounded good. It is good to hear more surrounding agencies coming on board . Happy scanning

I was also hearing TG 2301 for Butler County. Sounded like a County Fire related channel. Definetly not dispatch or fireground though. Sounded like a couple of volunteers with nothing better to do. Today was mostly just chit-chat and driving around the county trying the radios out in different areas.

newbie to scanner

Hey this is just Scott again,
I am a newbie to scanning so I turned my Pro106 into reg scan mode and found a few 900 mhz channels broadcasting the same radio station and thought that was cool. Then it found 2 more channels (fyi I am in Abilene still and don't hear anything from Abilene's towers) and I pick up the follow frequencies and P25 code 853:1125 P25: 1BB and when I look on the R.R. page about this I find the trunking county for Crawford county WAY over at the eastern border and on the page it says DEC 443 mode D Law TAC should I be getting that at all? No talk it is just stops on the channel until I push the button. Also I picked up 852.2375 P25: 1B3 and that isn't anywhere on the KS talkgroup page on R.R. any help on that? Thanks

A trooper in Republic Co was on the digital system today and used c-khp-2. They normally use the Cloud analog tower but i will continue to minitor it. Didn't catch the Control Channel it came across on but it's possible Cloud may be on digital now.

Those 900 MHz frequencies you were hearing are what are called STL's or Studio Transmitter Links. Very few radio stations actually have their broadcast studios at the transmitter site any longer. They link the Studio to the Transmitter site with a two way radio link that gives them telemetry on and control of the transmitter from the studio. They are usually wired as an electronic deadman switch also, so that if the STL goes down, the transmitter shuts down also. They also carry the program audio to the transmitter. More and more stations are switching to a DSTL or digital link. This allows them to send higher quality audio directly to the transmitter and, in the case of HD radio, it is needed to multiplex the analog and digital signals. Most newer equipment has provisions for eight to thirty-two or more "channels" of data/audio.

It's a flat bed truck with a crank up tower, generator, radio hut and 5 voice channel 700 Mhz P25 trunking site with a cache of 2500s than can be handed out.

what is COWS? please explain it

try this link:
Intelco Towers

look down on the page at the 2nd of the group of 4 pictures. That is what the 2 Kansas COW's look like. One is based in Wichita the other in Salina. They are operated by KDOT. In addition to the 700 trunking system they also contain a repeater on each of the 5 conventional mutual aid channels, an ACU 1000 patch gateway and several 800, UHF , VHF and Ham control stations (mobile radios in a rack). And yes, a cache of several handhelds, which they will charge you for if they don't get checked back in, as some agencies found out after Greensburg.

A COW is now active here in Hutchinson. The control channel is 769.93125. The only traffic I have heard is fairground maintenance workers getting things set up. They are using TG2019. I checked the channel with Pro96com and it is not showing as part of the state system. The Partridge tower is showing it on the list, but the connect fails.

OK that makes some sense...2019-2030 are ICS1-ICS10 and Command 1 & 2 which in the radios matches up to the "south" COW based in Wichita. TG's 4024-4035 are ICS11-20 and Command 3 & 4 for the "north" COW and one would assume it has different frequencies so they can operate side by side. But at least this gives some direction on where to look. I'm a bit surprised that the TG ID's are the same on both 700 and 800 systems but whatever. Is the 155.805 fair maintenance channel still active and they are patching it or have they just jumped to 700/800? Thanks!

I forgot about the fair conventional frequency. I am not hearing any traffic on it.

They are using TG2021 as well now on the COW.
