$400 is cheap...I know a few ppl that spent about $2400 on Astro Sabers before P-25 scanners were available

APCO Scanners

Wow guys,

That is just outragous as far as money just ot listen to certain agencies such as Kentucky State Police. I think if I were to spend anything over $200.oo it would have to be a piece of Ham Equipment. $500.00 dollars just to listen I would have to be a news reporter or something able to right it of as a business expense. I appreciate all your knowledge and time you guys have offered. I will update the scanner people here in Paris Kentucky that yes they can listen to KSP it is not some secret frequency as they all think (LOL) butit comes at a costly price $500 plus dollars. Iftheir are any takers I will offer to program them for them because that is how I am. I though will not be listeningto KSP .. I will be searching for Kentucky govt auctions possible to pick up some used mobiles that dont transmit but will only receive. Thanks again guys your awsome. I am glad to be a member here.

Charlie Im using the uniden 396t ...everything works but the 460.2750 freqs like that......the K S P comes through with a loud blarring noise and thats all I hear .....Used to i heard the blarring a few secionds and then the transmission starts...now its all blarring and no transmission.....one guy said the digital might have gone out on mine????? Thanks for any help in advance...I can send my scanner to the guy I bought it from and he will give me a new one but I dont want to do that if thats not the problem ya know
We over in the Henderson Post area are hearing a digital noise.

Pro 96 I need to test 396 it sound like either scanners isnt decoding about 8 seconds of voice, or someone said it is the what I call STATUS box?

Troopers havea buton or two I guess they hit will send to disp their current status?
Could this be what we are hearing?
Several of us are so it isnt one defective scanner

thanks

Have you changed your threshold for APCO-25. By default it is 8 and auto, I have been experimenting with mine and found less motorboat sound at "7".
If I set it to 10, motorboat is all I hear.

Trido: Ed's suggestion (quoted above) works for the 396.... I have a 96 and had loaded all the updates from the rat Shack site just to see what they did.... I have reverted to the 1.2 version, it seems to work best with KSP.... make sure you have each freq set to "FM" and then you might need to fiddle with the squelch.... if it happens on freqs that are pretty far from your location you might have to lock them out and find the A and B channels closer to you that work..... As I understand the 10-8 button, it is a momentary burst that has no impact on the voice signal.....

good luck and keep us posted....

I agree. I use a PRO 96 and I did the 1.4 DSP upgrade and it seemed to make it worse. (I went back to 1.2) It seemed like KSP would be talking and all of a sudden all you would hear was "digital hash." It might clear up and you could hear the rest of the transmission, but mostly not.

According to the troopers I talked to, the status buttons are to let dispatch know when they are 10-8, 10-7, Emergency, etc. (he won't share any more than that)

Not sure what is going on, but every once in a while, I hear Henderson and Madisonville dispatch report that they can not hear the units due to the "digital" noise or as one dispatcher referred to it as a waterfall. And I noticed that this occurs all hours of the day & night, no specific time.

No, sadly, you cannot monitor KSP with that scanner. To listen you must have a scanner capable of recieving P25 Digital broadcasts, which run north of $400 new.

P-25 sound quality

I just got a BC-250D and the sound quality sounds like it has to much bass. I adjusted sound quality to different settings and it didn't help. I've got the sound quality around 4.
Is this typical of Ksp and P-25 in general? Also I'm curious about the sound quality of a Pro
96 compared to the BC-250D? Lastly, sound quality between the Pro 96 and a Motorola Astro on Ksp? Thanks for any help in advance.

Ok, I cannot answer many of your questions...but I have a 250D and I believe that the sound is better than my 996. Does it have more bass? I guess a little (but I also have an external speaker on my 996). I have never adjusted the sound quality on either. However, I do prefer the 250 to the 996 as far as a stock radio for KSP in Post #3.

Thanks for your reply, I sold the 250d and I'm fixing to buy a 396T. I hope it has better sound in post #2 & #16. By the way, I to thought post #3 had pretty good sound thru the 250. But the signal strength wasn't good enough to listen in most places.

no, it is not possible to put them in a HT-1250 and listen. Ht-1250's will not do the digital mode.

Will KSP portables transmit on the same system their vehicles transmit on, or do they always have to activate their mobile repeater, each time they exit their vehicle? I have spoken with may KSP officers who all seem to advise the same thing, if they want to use their portables, they have to press a button in their cruiser. I assume that this button activates their mobile repeater. Is this really the case? I assisted in a vehicle pursuit with KSP some time ago where their unit went through a fence and the antennas were taken off. Last I was told, their dispatch could not hear them when they attempted to communicate, however, I could. At the time I was not exactly looking to see what channel they were on (I scan several of theirs), but I was also a little confused at how that could happen as well. Sorry if any of this has been covered before, I did not locate it in a previous thread.

Questions:
1. Does a KSP officer have to activate his mobile repeater before his portable will work?
2. If yes, what frequencies does it operate on? (154.66500 - Mobile Extenders / 154.92000 Portable Repeater / 153.92000 Portable Repeater/Tac Ops.)
3. It seems I have seen several different (TAC/Talkaround) channels listed, are their different ones in different areas or are some just old?

Thanks for the help.

1. the mobile repeater has to be manually turned on by pushing a button that says VRS
2. 154.665
