It appears that Pittsburgh, PA is about 250 miles west of you. Under normal circumstances, you will not hear anything that far away. However, under certain atmosphere conditions, you may experience brief periods of activity where you can hear far away signals. The exact areas that you hear may vary and may depend on the quality of your antenna, but the Missouri Highway Patrol appears to be a fairly common one that is heard by people on the east coast. The key here, however, is that this will not happen all that often (at least not often enough to count on monitoring the stations on a consistent basis).

Where I live here in Wisconsin, there are a couple school bus services that are quite active on 47.xx mhz. You might find something interesting near you.

Check out some ham radio forums... When there is talk of 6 meters being open, tune in.. Those frequencies are close to the 6 meter and 10 meter ham bands.

As mentioned above, it will be a once in a blue moon thing, but you'll know it when it happens. It's an awesome feeling!!
