I think I'd rather have one of the non-vaporware new radios that Harris(?) has contracted for with the DoD. One box, does everything, every frequency, every mode, from spark gap (kidding) to encrypted satcoms. And is in commercial manufacture. And yes, that's a very portable radio.
The announcement that some clever hams have managed to design a versatile circuit (radio) and put a smartphone control interface on it is all well and good, but now, convince any manufacturer that they can make money building and selling it. Especially when that might hurt sales of their own proprietary digital standards.
Nice concept. Needs a parts kit and a price tag though.
