And would need to be able to turn off GPS since you don't need unnecessary battery drain.

Built-in GPS could be useful. But how many would complain about the price for something they would not use?

Good point, but I'm sure there are quite a few 536 owners out there who didn't mind it's price knowing they didn't want/need the WiFi functionality.

But built in GPS in a scanner is, for me, a lot like green chile (I'm born & raised in NM): once you've had it, you can't imagine life without it and you want it in everything. :-D

Internal GPS is definitely a feature people find useful. There's a fair number of people willing to pay a stranger they met online to retrofit a GPS into their scanner. The actual cost of adding GPS would be less than $15 in wholesale quantities if the unit was designed for it from the beginning.

I resemble that remark!

My internal GPS mod includes a power switch specifically for the GPS, so it can be powered off when not needed. If GPS was designed into the unit, it could be powered on/off with a menu setting, instead of a push button switch.

I don’t get it....

Let’s say that we accept the description of this alleged new portable scanner is correct.
Why is there no mention of at least DMR being either included or optional when their competitor is including it for free? Is Uniden expecting us to pay for another new portable and pony up more dough for other modes that whistler includes? Again, this is if the rumors and this description are true.

Well I am for a cheaper base price and pay for options I want. Look at the way Motorola, EF Johnson and Kenwood sell their radios. The NX-5300 the addon options cost more than the stock radio price. Why should you be backed in to a corner to pay for something you do not need.

Will be very disappointed if Uniden releases this new scanner before offering NXDN to all of us who already own several x36 scanners. Some of us have spent several thousand dollars on their current flagship x36 scanners. Hopefully Uniden won't kick all of us x36 owners to the curb after the new scanner hits the market.

So I'm watching this thread with interest....here's my speculation on what's happening:

Let's assume the SDS100 is real. A scanner like this will always just fit in a niche market of a niche market. Uniden finally spot what's happening in that market, as Whistler continue to iterate updates to their TRX models, AOR are releasing new models imminently, even Icom are just about to release a new scanner. There's no perfect solution available on the market, but these alternatives WILL take potential custom away from Uniden. They're working on a new product, but it's not ready yet. What do they do?

By leaking what they have, and without any official information, they can seed doubt in potential customers heads...."do I spend all my $$$$ on a potentially inferior alternative, or wait to see if the SDS100 is real?". Uniden don't need to confirm or deny anything, as 'that's their company policy'. Some will still spend that cash on an alternative, but some will wait. They also get a lot of free marketing, as the speculation on this and other forums goes wild.

Not everyone needs or wants all the modes so they can set the base unit at a lower price and decided to buy what you're interested in. I'd say $30-40 a pop may be more palatable but license royalties are the real drivers.

Just for once I wish a company like Uniden would come out with a "balls out" unlimited product designed and built to high spec quality. Such as a cast magnesium body, buttons designed that won't wear out and are brightly backlit. a very high rez bright color display with some custom choices available in the menu for color and brightness. Cast adjustment knobs with set screws, NOT plastic. Gorilla glass display front. Abilities to charge while plugged into USB with a REAL USB sized plug used. Audio that would be way beyond the current levels with a small 3 band eq to dial in the sound desired. ALL the current broadcast technologies included not extra. Fine adjustments to all of the parameters that those techies of us like to have access to. All parts used to be close tolerance quality parts along with top quality circuit boards used. BNC of course not SMA. Well isolated battery power area to avoid any interaction with the antenna and sensitivity. Yeah.....I'm just dreaming....but it COULD be done and no doubt they'd charge a small fortune for it. But you all have to admit, IF they were to build such a radio most of you WOULD order one.........I know I would :)
