Chump change, especially if you have a small department.

That depends on perspective. Obviously smaller departments generally have smaller budgets. And with the public debts in New Jersey, grants are slowly getting tougher to get. When we're talking about modern Motorola land-mobile radios for public safety being anywhere from $3000-$5000 new, possibly more with all the options and whistles, an additional $600-$900 per radio could add up quickly.

Just heard the non NJICS West Caldwell Police on the NJICS Fairfield police channel.

There is interop with the rescue squads. At one time I did hear the non NJICS Cedar Grove talk to Verona on NJICS. So maybe Verona lent them a radio.

Heres the latest info i have for West Caldwell. They are upgrading their receiver lines from copper to fiber to improve the present VHF system. They are planning to transition over to NJICS sometime in the fall, and will reportedly simulcast over VHF. West Caldwell also dispatches for Caldwell and we still have no idea what they are planning. Caldwell PD seems to be in a little bit of turmoil lately as there have been several lawsuits against the Chief, and a few officers terminated. This will probably bring more lawsuits as well.

There is also talk of merging the two police departments to save money, so that complicates matters further. There is still no idea about what the fire departments will do either. So as usual we will wait and see.

Didnt see that one coming, I'll have to add them tomorrow. In the clear for now?

They should remain clear unless something changes suddenly from their original plan. Expect the remaining few remaining agencies in Union County to convert over the next 9-12 months thanks to new grants and shared services agreements with the county. Hillside Fire is going eventually, but it keeps getting moved back. By 2021 the entire county should be on the system. Garwood will probably be last to go due to small town council politics.

Keep in mind also it's easier for municipalities in Union County to switch because the county merged the existing county owned system into the ICS through agreements with the state. Most of the maintenance and installs in UC are still done by the County Communications techs out of Westfield not REMU. It's less red tape in UC cause municipalities can switch through a shared services agreement and let the county handle the details with the state on their behalf through the agreements that UC already has with the state.

The rarely heard TG for B2-5 on Site 7, Union County Simulcast is active this morning. It also sounds as if several patrols are actually on the 700 side. We shall see if this continues. Also heard on West Orange, Hunterdon. Not on Martinsville or Rutgers at the moment.

Stone Harbor approved a NJICS agreement on November 5, 2019 so expect to see them hop over at some point.

I was going through some older files on my computer a few weeks ago and found this. Not sure what ever happened with it, but it was passed at the time without objection from first responders.
