whats NDA?

Non-Disclosure Agreement--in essence, since the radio hasn't been officially released yet, the beta testers still have to keep mum about certain aspects of the radio. (This is actually pretty standard in hardware beta testing.)

And I expect it is killing the beta crew to have to keep mum about this :D

GRE Ad in Sept. Popular Communications

I picked up the September edition of Popular Communications today. A full two page spread GRE ad is in the center of the magazine with a "Shown actual size" picture of the PSR-500.

Looks great!

Does anyone know if there is a limit on how many primary and backup control channel frequencies you can enter for a Multi-Site TRS (as described in the chart on Page 75 of the manual)? The reason I ask is because there seems to be a limit of either 99 or 100 implied in the instructions (on page 26 of the manual) for setting up a trunking system object. The format of the prompt (Ch01: ) only has space for 2 digits. I am assuming that means you can program only 99 or 100 channels (e.g. Ch01:, Ch02:, ..., Ch99:, Ch00: ).

From page 26 of the manual:
“Next, scroll to the Frequencies: field to begin entering the control channel frequencies for the MySystem trunked radio system. Press the SEL key, and at the Ch01: field you should enter the first control channel frequency for your Motorola trunked radio system. Simply key in the frequency…"

Hopefully it will change to Ch100: or some other format to let you enter more than 100 frequencies. The reason I am concerned is in the Indiana SAFE-T Multi-Site TRS has over 100 distinct primary and backup control channel frequencies. I know I can probably divide the system into regions but if I can get the whole state with all the talk groups I'm interested in into one V-Scanner folder then why not take advantage of that.

This concerns me:
Physical Features The PSR-500 is almost identical in size to the PRO-96, but just a smidge shorter. The 34-key keypad integrates some new touches, including three “softkeys” underneath the LCD that are used to select options provided on the bottom row of the LCD.

From the specs in the user doc given to the FCC in a side-by-side comparison to the specs of the BC-396, it should be much smaller than the PRO-96....

It's been said several times that it's almost identical to the Pro-97 in size and shape. It even has the same plastic detachable belt clip that the Pro-97 has. You can see those details on the prototypes shown in the wiki and FCC photos.

Not sure what's the concern, I think the draft manual, as all draft manuals, has errors, omissions, etc.

EDIT: Actually, I just measured my Pro-97 and it's the same specs as the PSR-500 manual states in page 93.

PRO-97 size I can handle -- the PRO-96 is way to big...

I have both. A half inch taller makes one "way too big"? Seems nit-picky to me.

For those of you who have read the manual...

Does the unit have automatic search and store? (like the unidens?)
Does the unit allow the ability to monitor EDACS Wide control channels with 'narrow' voice channels? (like the unidens don't)

The ability to flash different LEDs is great, but are there any audio cues? Can the radio set an alert on a specific frequency or TGID? How about beeping on unknowns?

This doesn't answer your question but it makes me wonder what system you might be talking about?

According to pages 47-48 and many other areas of the manual, YES to all your questions.

However, this is still a draft manual and stuff is subject to change. Like the manual doesn't mention that the radio comes with an AC adapter and USB programming/control cable.

When it gets a bit closer I will be buying mine from Hamstation. I got my 396 there and they were great to work with.

Audio alarms are programmed in the same way as the LED alerts, and I think that several different ones are described. The way I read it, you can have LED and/or audio alarms for any frequency or talkgroup object, search object, or 'Spectrum Sweeper' object. I can't remember if it actually said how many different sounds were available. The Pop'Comm review might have some insight on that as well.

Speaking of the Pop Comm review, anyone know where it's available? The book stores and news stands around here already have the September issue and have returned the unsold August copies.
