Speaking of the Pop Comm review, anyone know where it's available? The book stores and news stands around here already have the September issue and have returned the unsold August copies.

I just bought August at Books-A-Million in the Richmond, VA the other day. It had just hit the shelves....go figure.

Scan lists

Just skimed through the manual. My first reaction to Scan Lists is that a limit of 20 does not make sense. Why not allow up to 99? I have over 80 system files for the Dallas/Fort Worth Area.

Maybe it will make more sense once I have one in my hands. I'm use to the 396/996. It's nice to be able to disable all active systems(although it requires too many key presses), but a particular one to focus in on scanning just that system. It would be nice if there was a way to quickly disable everything except a particular trunked system with as few key presses as possible. Perhaps that's in the manual or a possibility with some of the features. I know it's a whole different world with the new OOUI, but still being able to zoom in on/focus on a particular system is very important to me, and then returning "back to normal" scanning easily is also very important.

Overall, it looks pretty interesting.

Because with V-Scanner it's easier to have a subset that you use, versus trying to remember if your trip through Ohio was on system 77 or 78. Now you have your 20 primary groups (recall that one scanlist can have trunked and conventional) and you turn them off/on pretty quickly.

I've seen private calls mentioned in the manual, but nothing about status bits there or anywhere in any of these threads...

Very interesting, i'm digging it more and more...

So.. a few more questions for those who have the answers;

(1) Will it have the ability to do automatic search and store.

(2) Can you change the steps during search, and or tune.

(3) Is there some sort of pager filter that can be turned on for Spectrum Sweeper.

Thanks...

For the same price you get:

380MHz, and 700MHz Trunking
LTR
Display increased to 16 characters
I-CALLs
Tons more memory
Spectrum Sweep
LED can be programmed to different colors

I may have missed a few.

Gee I don't know, maybe reading the several threads about it along with the draft FCC manual might give you an idea?

Why are they keeping basically the same red-brick size?
Ill stay with the pro 96 as this is just a waste of gre's time...
Nothing to important to fork out another 500 for a scanner thats basically the same in size and maybe 5 more un needed options than my 96..

There's also another biggie that nobody so far has mentioned (not that I think it will matter much to our troll):

Upgradable firmware for both CPU and DSP.

Yes, you read that right.

Upgradable formware for both CPU and DSP.

What this means:

They can add more features to thsi thing over time. Post-Nextel-rebanding table maps off for 800MHz systems? You can just go ahead and download new CPU firmware. New features enhancing trunking? Download the firmware. Bug found? Download the new firmware. And so on and so on.

Having seen the number of new CPU versions with both the Pro-92 AND Pro-96, I frankly LIKE the idea of NOT having to send my radio into the shop for a new CPU version :D

Plus there's stuff like LTR (a real necessity in my area) and a lot of other nifty features the Pro-96 doesn't have, along with a lot of improvements to the stuff the Pro-96 *does* have. It is a worthy successor IMHO and I *will* be getting one even though I do love my '96 :D

.

And if GRE is considering release of the new scanners to the rest of the world, I hope they take into consideration, the difference in spectrum usage in other regions.

For example, in Australia, 70 to 85 MHz (with 12.5 KHz steps) is used by the emergency services, and others, in the same manner 30 to 50 MHz is used in the USA. Likewise in Europe, the 70 to 85 Mhz band is used for services other than Television channels.

Also, with the 800 MHz band blocked from 869.000 MHz upwards, trunk tracking in this band is somewhat crippled, as the Australian trunking band extends up to 869.9875 MHz.

And considering the extensive MPT1327 networks outside of America, it would be nice if this protocol was supported.
