you can listen to the input frequencies attenuated with a stub antenna for nascar, then if you pick up a signal then there is something happening very close to you.

Exactly. If using a radio, there is no way to hide that you are coming, encrypted or not.

more ramblings... yada yada.. Fact is..the technology is available it can protect officers why not use it to their advantage. That's the way the world is going.. time to get over it

Some people never get it, never will.

@FFPM571 - YOU were mistaken. Your earlier post claimed our listening is a "privilege" Not true. The privilege is on the officers and public sector worker's side to work for US and to have us pay their way and all that expensive equipment. They need to start paying their "fair share" and allow the public to listen and to help them instead of declaring us all terrorists and not trustworthy. Complaining and fighting to keep our rights that we have had for our lifetime isn't a waste of time, It's our right. Watching them erode and having to listen to nincompoops like you say "no big deal" shows the problem in our country... you.
Pure nonsense.

Well here come the personal attacks. hate to tell all the butt hurt scannerheads. Encryption is here. You can complain and cry all you want. Won't change. Keep it up and it will be like Europe where everything is Tetra and nothing can be monitored. as Bob Dylan says...Times they are a changing...
There should be no fear of total encryption, in spite of what you might think. Much of the country simply doesn't have the funding nor infrastructure to support this. Not even Illinois is being threatened by the complete encryption pill. Take a look at the ratio of counties that are partially/ totally encrypted versus the counties that are not. Now look at their annual budgets, funding isn't there so again no reason to fear it. :). Although I will say the increased number of scanner feeds DO antagonize more agencies in trying to do so. 73, n9zas

Why not just used Control 5 which is already encrypted plus Rkfd Pd has other TG's to use if they need to switch over to.

Terre Haute found out the hard way several years ago when they were on an EDACS Digital system all by themselves. Not only could they not get any public help, because the public was in the dark, they couldn't get any outside agency to assist on High-Priority calls because other departments couldn't hear them, i.e. Sheriff's Dept, or ISP... It lasted for a couple of years before they ditched that system and joined Indiana's Safe-T system. Ok, so what did they do... they encrypted ALL of their TALKGROUPS except their MAIN DISPATCH GROUP! So now when something Big happens, at least ANY unit in any department close to that call for service could at least hear that call and respond if they where in the area! Encryption on a MAIN TG goes against OFFICER SAFETY and I hope some departments don't find this out the HARD WAY!

Hopefully the RPD don't learn the hard way....................

Secret Police?

Encryption on everything is a "secret police" force. If on a jury, I for one will not vote to convict on evidence presented by such an agency. Proponents comfortable being convicted that way?

Chief said he doesn't care what the public thinks, he is going encrypted on the 1st.

He said that Tuesday night
. Sad... Thats really unfortunate because Sometime in the future he's going to need the publics help to solve a case, and the people of Rockford aren't going to know a damn thing because of his stubborness!! :( 73, n9zas

Not surprising. Makes me sad as I spent many an hour listening to Rockford back in the day. Chief will feel safer but will get no help from those on the streets who would normally help. I didn't see a thing officer, didn't hear anything either. The thing that makes me laugh is that Twits and Farcebook pretty much DO the same things as those Phone apps do. People and criminals* use that stuff to coordinate a lot faster than anything. Even the terrorists enjoy it. Instead? the scanner hobbyist is blamed because of thug behavior and made out to be some kind of semi-dangerous Gladys Kravitz type. Good luck Rockford listeners.

Some hilarious idiot posted THIS comment in on Freybearfreakfan's page about this story.
After calling everyone a name he posted this underneath -
"They're not trying to hide anything, dumbasses. They're switching to StarComm digital radios which costs like $2000 per unit to install. It's not that you can't listen to it, it's just that it costs a lot of money to do!"

It's hard to imagine some butt-brain would post that without even checking to see that they were already on Starcom21 and in the clear except for a few encrypted talk-groups. IT's THIS kind of crap-brain that should simply stick to watching the Kartrashians or something more his speed.
