Cost (both build and engineering) is significantly higher than previous models, too.

The R&D in man hours must have been tremendous.

People forget that a large part of the cost of bringing something to market is R&D.

Then you have to add support man hours to that as well.

EVERYTHING costs more now-a-days, including labor costs.

Compared to what I paid for past Scanning equipment, I don't think the SDS100 price is out of line.

Do I WANT to pay more..... of course not.

But WILL I spend more for a greatly improved product, and do I understand why it costs more....Yes.

Sorry if I missed this, but is there an anticipated release date?

Just need to know when to sell my 436 :)

They say Q2 2018, but once you factor in delays it's probably more like Q3, or maybe Q4 just in time for the holidays.

If you want to sell your 436, the sooner the better. As more people learn of the new model being released, the value of the 436 will drop fairly quickly. I was actually considering buying a 536, but of course now I am not.

I have mixed feeling about this. I am just getting in the game and looking to purchase a 536 in the next few weeks...

...but, if I can get a good used one on the cheap to get my foot in the door... :(

I'll be keeping all my x36 scanners. Today, they are the best scanners on the market. When the SDS-100 comes out, they will be the second best scanners on the market. Don't see any drawbacks on owning the best scanner (SDS100) on the market and the second best scanners (BCDx36) on the market.

Doubtful it will drop very much. All you have to do is look at what the xt series is still going for. Even the 796 and 296 and even farther back the 780xlt are still commanding quite a good price. So don't look for the x36 series prices to drop any considerable amount.

I am thinking... end of June? Barring a major catastrophe.

I do agree that the price on the x36 will drop when the SDS100 hits the market but I don't think it will be drastic. The used market may see more of a hit especially if dealers start getting rid of their old x36 stock.

Sales may fall off a bit but the difference in price will keep the the x36 line valid for most people not in the know... especially since the x36 line has NXDN now.

I don't have any LSM to deal with where I live so I will be keeping all my x36 scanners because they fill all my wants and needs.

I will also be getting the SDS100... because I like the screen and SDR possibilities.

But then again... I am not a typical user.

Will history judge the x36 scanners to be "scanner hall of fame" material as the 780XLT clearly is? I wonder about how fast x36 values will go down as well.

Japan Fiscal Year (and 1Q) starts Sunday.

If you subscribe to The Spectrum Monitor, April 2018 issue, there is information about it on page 95.

Does it have more info than the Sales Sheet that was posted?

I recall quite a few people making statements in the past like "I would pay $1000 if it worked on simulcast" or something similar. Well here you are and it's far less than $1000.

For what it is and what it claims to do it seems like a bargain.

I'm curious if there's any support for IQ data output.

Over the years, there's been many of these pre-release type announcements. The usual pattern is that stated MSRP ends up being higher than the actual initial price. So maybe it'll be $50 - $100 cheaper?

And compare that to the top-tier units back in the 80s and 90s that would set you back a good $400+ back then.

Normally, I'd rather have AA batteries since that's a common size and there's a lot of good options. But don't re-chargeable packs provide more power? If that's true, then maybe that's a signal that this'll be an overall more robust unit. Like maybe better audio, a brighter backlight, etc.

So it uses a memory card. How long will it take to boot up and how stable will the card be from getting corrupted? If you power it in the car and shut off the ignition while the scanner is still on, is that gonna hose it up? It would be nice to have a scanner in the car where you can set it and forget it.

Doubtful the SD card will get "hosed up" from turning on/off ingnition of a vehicle as it has an internal battery.
