I think it's too hard to tell how well the scanner decodes simulcast when the video is a side-by-side of 2 radios. You can't tell which radio you're hearing. How about a DSD+ or Unitrunker view showing the system activity and then audio from just the scanner holding on a single talk group? Then we can tell exactly if/when the scanner should be decoding a transmission and how good it sounds?

What would you all like to hear or see? We're taking suggestions and will be going live on YouTube very shortly!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180413/7f724f3a613c7bdb0ea8d0958f6e7bcc.jpg

Nothing particular here -- just the scanner in action. Any chance you can give us an idea where you are at (close enough proximity) without giving away where you are actually at whilst you are livestreaming? Ya know, just so we know where you are in comparison to the various simulcast systems that you might be monitoring.

If you plugged the headphone outs of the radios into the line-in audio of the camera, you could have one radio's audio in the left channel (preferably the one on screen left) and the other radio's audio in the right channel. That would also eliminate the ambient background noise.

I'd like to hear a P25 simulcast system on the SDS100 only. Maybe in different locations within a home and/or building, as well as outside, and mobile in a vehicle.

It would also be helpful to know how many sites the system has and your location in relation to them. Try to eliminate background noise as much as possible.

Thanks in advance.

I wondered the same thing before about how to become a tester. Who are they and how were they picked if there's no application? Do you have to be like an electrical engineer or a radio tech or something? Or was it based on location? Once the thread started with the announcement, we had seemingly random people magically popping with videos of the radio.

It's not their first rodeo as far as testing goes...repeat offenders, so to speak. Not offenders, though; that's just a phrase.

And Jason...can't help but wonder about the looks you get with that setup on the table! lol

At least six sites. They are the Polaris Starbucks, which is the northern area of hte simulcast.

Although, he may also be monitoring Franklin Co MARCS simulcast as well as Columbus City MARCS simulcast.

This thread is about the SDS100 so lets just demonstrate that. Comparisons are meaningless. And people need to remember that your demos are about the systems you listen to. For others, YMMV and people will need to buy the radio to find out how it works on their systems. Buy from some place that has a return policy!!

Please focus on P25 simulcast systems in various environments since that is the subject du jour. We can all imagine that for non-simulcast systems this radio will perform as well as any other scanner.

Thanks for the work you are doing our benefit.

We are going to find a quiet place net time and have better camera gear. I was limited by only bringing my cell phone and laptop. But the audio has been amazing on the SDS100!

Thanks for all your help Matt!

The TACN system is non-simulcast each site has a different control channel and different talk channels. My 436 536's and my 996P2's work 100%.

Yep, I agree - no real need to "test" an SDS100 on it - the current Uniden scanners work great already.

Plus, asking to be a tester isn't how one becomes a tester anyway.

Can you simply hold the SDS on one single, busy talkgroup and leave it there for an hour or so?

This would show the scanner's ability to follow a conversation without cutouts, distortion, etc.

I personally don't care about Unications, APX's, etc.

And thank you again Jason for all of your time and effort!!!

Good suggestion.

I feel like I'll end up getting one just to add to the collection. I use an XTS/APX for normal day to day use now though. I like how it supports practically all mainstream digital protocols.

I think a good way to compare radios over the Internet would be to take a 436HP and the SDS100 and connect the 2 radios to a common antenna. Put the radios on hold on a tough simulcast system, Make a Y splitter auto cable and then feed the audio from each radio into opposite channels of a sound card while the video runs. Might be some issues with ground loop isolation required, but this should be able to be set up with some tweaks. Maybe an audio mixer would be a better choice to connect the 2 radios.

This way you have about the best "Side by Side" comparison and people can either use headphones/earbuds or fade between channel to hear exactly how much different the SES100 is when compared to the 436HP.

Maybe even do the same with other radios, Uniden and others, even a Unication G4/G5.

I'm pretty satisfied with the testing I've seen via users You Tube videos and don't think this is necessary. If you have any intention of buying this scanner and need to be "sold" any further, then hold off until others have had it awhile. The P25 simulcast systems results have been very impressive, and while I'd like to see a few minute video for Illinois Starcom, I'll know within a matter of minutes if this is as impressive when I get to use it. I can hear and see the results, and what I'm impressed about most is the way it handles the decoding when the scanner is showing poor reception. Most vendors have a liberal return policy as long as it's in good shape when you try and return it.

My comment was not necessarily for my own interest, but would be the best Side By Side comparison I could think of and would be helpful for the masses.

I would think of the SDS100 works as good as it is claimed to work that Uniden would want to do exactly what I suggested to show how the SDS100 performs up against the competition in tough simulcast environments.

The Ohio MARCS video of the SDS100 looks like it handles the system well, but without another standard scanner monitoring the same system it is hard to tell for sure if the location has severe simulcast problems.
