• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The Gift Of Unication!

Hello David & All,

I'm just new to the Unication G5 (700/800 & VHF)... I received mine for Christmas... I know, lucky me! :)

I have a local friend here in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) that programmed it up for me... thank goodness, it appears to be somewhat complex to say the least!

Being a Volunteer with one of the local Fire Rehab Support Units here in Toronto, I monitor Toronto Fire as well as surrounding Departments... I'm looking forward to the upcoming upgrade that will (hopefully) allow me to monitor the Ontario Provincial Police.

So far I have no complaints, my pager is running the "V0.90-0.14A-R11P" firmware... I, like some, would have no idea where to get the most recent firmware, since I received my pager as a gift... I do find it odd that it can't be obtained directly from Unication, but I guess they have their reasons...?

Oh, I thought it was pretty nifty that I could customize my home screen with my own art work and text... you can't do that with your everyday Scanner... so thanks for that option!

You have to E -mail the dealer they will send you a Dropbox link ,

I do understand that... if I knew who the Dealer was I would do that, but since I received it as a gift, I do not know whom to contact.

I suppose I'll wait for my gifter to return from vacation and find out then...

So now hoping the phase 2 update comes out the same time we will be going live. We were supposed to be online last week but do to tie in issues with our dispatch we have been pushed back to “ sometime in the next few months” on a good note it will give me some more time to save money

I ordered my G4 from Scanner Master. Anyone have experience with getting the firmware from them?

I read through all the pages of this post, and found that you can send them a message...

https://www.scannermaster.com/email_your_questions_a/218.htm

I hope that helps!

On a side note, I was at a Fire Canteen Call this morning, so it was the first time showing off my new Unication G5 to the guys, and they were impressed! It's just too bad we don't have a reasonable Dealer here in Ontario, Canada... Yes, I know there's a Dealer in Sudbury, but they ask for ridiculous / unreasonable requests before they will consider selling you a unit.

Yeah, here's hoping for the phase 2 release in short time. We have a new system in the county getting ready to go live in a couple weeks and I'm sure several users in the county will want to get a G5 pager.

Yeah I’ve been hoping for the same thing, our transition to our phase 2 system was delayed due to console issues but seems to be moving along now. I am going to be the test dummy for this pager on our system. I hope it’s out soon but def don’t want it rushed so there aren’t issues. Here’s hoping!

I programmed one of our G5's with the new system in it, and tested it with our mobile repeater, while phase 1, works just fine. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to make the adjust over to phase 2 in the PPS

I have an entire profile loaded and ready to go but don’t have my G5 yet as I don’t want to buy it and phase 2 doesn’t come out for another 6 months or more. I’m also hoping I don’t have to re write the entire profile that in the system select we can just change it to phase 2 somewhere

Fortunately, we’ve been using our G5’s for conventional analog thus far. I did make a new profile for the new system and it works fine on phase 1. It’s going to be a learning curve for everyone here, so it would be nice to be allowed to test the phase 2 PPS to demonstrate it. I’m sure many of the agencies will purchase them.

Software Upgrade Cost?

I don't believe I've seen this mentioned in this post, but noticed this on the Unication Web Site...

"Do they work on a Phase II system?

The G4/5 are currently Phase I devices. A Phase II software release is in development and we will begin beta testing in Q4 of 2017.

At this time, we do not have a definite release date but we are hoping that Phase II will be available in early 2018. This software upgrade will be available for purchase and can either be added to a current device, or included with new device at the time of purchase. The Phase II software will MSRP at $150.00."

At the moment, there is no visible change in the PPS to support P2. The radio decodes the proper mode based on what the system transmits.

No Analog Trunking?

I'm actually hearing from the Dealer that my friend got my Pager from, that Analog Trunking will never be an option on the G5...

For this type of system...

Motorola Type II SmartZone
Analog and APCO-25 Common Air Interface

Analog trunking is dead sir. No system parts have been available from the manufacturer for many years. If your jurisdiction is still using analog trunking, paging should be the least of your concerns. But since you also mention P25 CAI that means they've at least made it to 1997 technology.

My state police are still operating a mot type II smartzone omnilink that was upgraded in 2007 and was also rebanded. The talk groups are listed on the NJICS system but aren’t always simulcast so I’m guessing they are not actually on that system just patched in.

Roger that. I've seen the G5 Phase 2 version working on NJICS and it works great so far. SPNJ will come around soon enough.
