I can confirm that Pike Electric is using 49.58 on their trucks that are doing work in the Daytona Beach area. Usage is infrequent.

These are Part 22 auctioned paging channels (43.2 - 43.66 and 35.2 - 35.66). This is the first time I have noticed public safety use of the low band paging channels.
Is the steady tone 2175 Hz tone remote? It might be voting receiver or remote site links.

Yes, Part 22 channels. The transmissions I heard on 43.24 and 43.30 are related, sounds like part of the same system. The only landmarks I heard were "Desiree Road" and "Santo Domingo Road". I think the band was open to the west.

I have the COM201B back up now after finally fabricating a missing top portion out of the threaded part of an OE fiberglass section and an aluminum tube. It's working great now. I'm hearing 6 meter repeaters now and stuff all across lowband.
46.460 seems to be one of the strongest.

not a very attractive price for a groundplane with extra added built in lossiness
They are expensive new but the performance is way better than you can imagine for a small-ish ground plane. Its only a dB or two down from a resonant 1/4 wave ground plane but it does that consistently across the 30 to 88Mhz range. The antenna it replaces in the field was 16ft tall and had 19 separate parts, and the COM201B works better.
If you want a terrific omni directional VHF lo band monitor antenna you will probably not find anything better.

I very rarely see antennas on their vehicles anymore. Seemed like every one of them had low band antennas going back a while. Thanks for the area post! Were they using CTCSS?

Yes. It will work better on the lower end of the band where the dipole legs are closer to 1/4 wavelength long.

I'm really excited to set up my listening station. I used to enjoy low band skip when I was a kid. In 1979 I was picking up CHP and Oregon State Police here in Texas and tons of new England FDs.

Back in the 80's the first time I lived in Wichita Falls I had a vertical dipole cut for about 39 or 40 MHz up about 25 feet for a while. I heard stuff from all over. There was some local stuff over 100 miles away I could hear most of the time.

For skip it doesn't make any difference because the polarization is constantly changing.

I usually don't even try any more. I don't have outside antennas and there is too much noise in my neighborhood.
